Movies, books, tv

For some reason that reminded me of the tv Superman joke which was along the lines of..... It's obvious that Superman can be hurt by actual guns. Not bullets, literal guns. If Superman is in front of you don't shoot him, throw your gun at him.

I guess there's a famous scene from George Reeves Superman where three dudes are shooting at him from five feet away as he just stands there, when the bullets run out they throw the gun at him and he steps aside to not get hit by them.

I love TV consistency/plot armor/duex ex machina storytelling point outs, humor.

The 'everything wrong with' series is pretty good as they go through and count all of the nonsensical plot points of a show or movie.

I've seen others like that. Game of Thrones is littered with them (and hilarious when pointed out).
Another takeaway:
What is it with franchise starship captains (Kirk, Picard) having sons with women who never bothered to tell them for 30 years?

I never saw the play, but I did see the movie Hamalot, I mean Camelot. Aaron Sorkin rewriting the play sounds like a great idea.

Should be interesting. We flew in to see the new revival of Sweeney Todd last week. Excellent!

Binged Picard so I'm caught up for the series finale this week. Best line of the series:

Dr. Beverly Crusher: Will, did you just throw an asteroid?
Captain Riker: GD right I did.

Anyone watched The English on prime? It’s a six episode series. Western starting Emily Blunt and a really good actor playing a Pawnee ex-military scout.

Bridget Fonda hasn’t acted in more than 20 years, and that’s just how she likes it.

Bridget Fonda, daughter of Peter Fonda and Susan Brewer, hasn’t acted in more than 20 years. She says she has no plans to return to Hollywood.
For Bridget Fonda, a life away from the Hollywood spotlight can be a life well-lived.

The former actor, daughter of actors Peter Fonda and Susan Brewer, spoke with the Daily Mail on Monday about her decision to retire from acting. She is best known for her work in "Single White Female," "Jackie Brown" and "The Godfather Part III."

The Daily Mail caught Fonda, 59, at LAX and asked if she might be interested in "making a move back into Hollywood."

"I don't think so, it's too nice being a civilian," she responded as she got into a car. Not even a director could persuade her to jump back into acting, she told the Mail photographer.

The former actor, niece to Jane Fonda, was spotted with her 18-year-old son, Oliver Elfman, whom she shares with composer Danny Elfman ("The Nightmare Before Christmas"). Fonda and Elfman married in 2003.

Fonda last acted in the miniseries "Snow Queen" in 2002, according to IMDb. Her additional movie work includes "Finding Graceland" and "A Simple Plan."

In 1990, she received her first Golden Globe nomination for "Scandal"; her second came in 2002 for "After Amy." Fonda also earned an Emmy nomination in 1997 for "In the Gloaming." She retired in 2002.

Fonda survived a 2003 car crash in Malibu. She reportedly lost control of her vehicle but sustained only minor cuts and bruises. Since then, Fonda has rarely appeared in public, save for a movie premiere in 2009.

Might be twoo . . . might not be twoo. The pic that went with this story bears no resemblance to the one dbm posted.

Good for her. Honestly.

Also, anything written about Bridget Fonda that doesn't mention Lake Placid or Jackie Brown is trash.

Has anyone seen The Diplomat on Netflix, it literally just started. This article calls it Netflix's attempt at The West Wing and stars Kerry Russell who did so well in The Americans.

I watched the first episode and it was fast paced so you had to try to keep up with the new characters. Gave it a B+. They did make mention of an old president who just lost the house and and a funny comment about the vp.

I am two episodes in. I really like it, and Russell is easy on the eyes. The West Wing comparison is weak at best so far. It is far more Jack Ryan.

Got SWMBO to watch this this evening. Thanks. After the first episode, it looks like it will be fun. The politics are a little far fetched, but we'll see what happens.

4 episodes in and it is still a Jack Ryan novel. So it is a spy thriller, in that way it is like The Americans. But far more Ryan, something happens and the whole world is pointing one way but she is convinced it is a different direction.

But . . . but . . . but . . . Jack Ryan didn't have a princess.

So Succession last night….Shiv’s revenge. Seems like this show is going to nail the landing. So far the final season has been excellent.

I'm unlikely to order Netflix just for one show, but I listened to an interview with the showrunner on NPR yesterday, and they played several clips of dialogue. I was not impressed. Everything she said sounded tortured, heavy-handed, and overwrought. Just bad clip selection?

I suspect context matters, if they chose several high intensity scenes that would happen.

I don't think it is great. Like Jack Ryan she has strong Mary Sue tendencies. Some of the politics requires a leap of faith and serious suspension of disbelief. So no, don't order Netflix for this show. It is more good than great, at least so far.

Not yet, how is it? My wife hated season 1, I hope his job change helps her.
It's more of the same, except he starts as a lawyer. Della's character is really being developed a lot. Minor spoiler: she even gets to cross-examine a witness in court. And just like season 1, the mystery here is very traditional and convoluted and tough to figure out, but the answer will probably be simple when we get it.
