I am reading A Distant Mirror, Barbara Tuchman's look at the Hundred Year's War emphasizing a particular noble. It amazes me western Europe and Christianity survived the period. She goes much of the science they knew, they were not ignorant people. But then they were totally ignorant on governance and living with one another.

And our most conservative Christian brethren would be heretical leftists.

Anyone trying How We Roll on CBS? It's a sitcom loosely based on the life of bowler Tom Smallwood.

So far, I wouldn't exactly call it good, but it stars archetypal good guy Pete Holmes, and it's shaping up to be a test of whether or not a comedy can be successful if the premise is that a story can overall be positive and uplifting. I am interested to see if a comedy that goes out of its way to not be negative or dirty or offensive can gain any traction.

We passed because even the previews weren't good.

Currently halfway through Dan Jones' Power and Thrones: A New History of the Middle Ages. So far, I've come across very little that would be enlightening to anyone who has a previous interest in the subject. However, it's written very accessibly, so anyone who wants to read history, but doesn't want it to be dense, will find it interesting. And there are a few tidbits here and there that were new to me, and I imagine the same will be true for others, even those already versed in the time period (for me, I found the bits about Cluny and the power of the monastic network to be fascinating).

Edit: Oh yeah:

History book update:

Finished this book last week. It was pretty solid. Definitely mass-market consumption. Jones' English biases show through. Virtually every section ends with "There was no better example of this than..." and the best example was almost always someone connected to British history. William Marshal was the best knight, Edward I built the best castles, etc.

Now, I'm staying on the history bent and reading Neil Price's Children of Ash and Elm: A History of the Vikings. This is shaping up to be a little more hard scholarship than the Jones book, although still clearly written for mass-market consumption.

I thought the same thing. I only watched it because I like Pete Holmes. At this point, I'm more interested in whether or not a show that might be considered too saccharine for CW can survive on a major network.

Also, Julie White and Chi McBride are good in it.
Might run a couple and see how it sets then.

@Marvin the Martian Have you seen the promos for the new Star Trek? I don't want to get too excited, but I like the aesthetic. Looks like a true prequel for TOS, and not just a reboot.
This story has me hopeful, pun intended. The new series is back to hope and optimism of the future. Too many shows tell us humans suck, time to get back to dreaming of a better world.

Finished Ozark . I’ll wait until others have had a chance to finish before discussing. Well done though.

How many episodes is the second half?
I may be wrong but I believe there are seven. Have only seen the first episode of this last half-season. Saw it Friday night before we got up early yesterday to drive to Georgia. It. Was. A. Doozy. Incredibly good. Will likely get several more in tonight. Can’t quite figure out how it’s ending, but it’s a series I’ll hate to see end.

Getting ready to start the first episode of "Under the Banner of Heaven" on Hulu. I really liked the book by Krakauer.
I like all of his stuff and learned an awful lot from that book. It’s my birthday and I’m celebrating by watching John Wayne Gacy tapes. How morbid is that? ( I’ve been out celebrating all day but yep that’s what I’m doing now! )

I knew there was a reason I liked you. Just crazy enough to be fun.

Well, I read this book years ago, and I only remember the most basic parts. The first episode was pretty intense and well acted. Did a good job of setting up a very creepy rabbit hole we will be exploring.

The North Water on BBC America and streaming on AMC+. Colin Farrell, Stephen Graham, and Jack O'Connell are in it. A whaling ship is going to be wrecked in the northern ice packs for the insurance money and a whole bunch of things go wrong. Really dark and twisted story about a couple of dark and twisted men.

the FFs felt only rich white males should be allowed to vote.

i love how conservatives have somehow taken on the idea that The Constitution was carved into stone tablets by the hand of God, carried down Bunker Hill by George Washington with one tablet in each arm.
The FF were right about giving us a democratic representative gov't. If a true democracy exist then tyranny of a majority is possible which could let the majority squash the opposition. Getting some things wrong doesn't eliminate the good system of gov't and the idea that our rights come from the Almighty not from government.
