I had no idea how many until now. Imagine getting a memo essentially saying "no more songs unless they're going to #1".

That failure of “Nothing But Heartaches” to reach the Top Ten (if memory serves, it stalled at 11) prevented the Supremes from having something like a 12 or 15 song run of singles to do so. We’re talking Elvis or Beatles territory here.
