Figured I'd throw this out to lighten up this place a little.

Throwing out the obvious choices (NCAA championship games) what game(s) have stuck in your head the most, over the years? I'm basing this on high level of play, not 'incident' driven (ie chair flying across the court, or anything having to do with Ted Valentine).

I'll throw out two...both based on the stress level induced during the games.

1. IU at OSU Feb 1991- ABC Sunday afternoon game, Keith Jackson and Vitale, frosh Bailey goes for 32, Cheney vs Jimmy Jackson, IU chokes the lead at end of regulation then loses at the end of OT. Yes it was a loss....but one of the better NCAA games I can remember. So much talent on the court that day. Both teams playing hardass defense.

2. IU vs LSU regional final 1987- war on the court, I was beyond exhausted when this game ended. This was IMHO IU's toughest challenge in the tourney (they actually handled UNLV much better than LSU). I still have nightmares about Jose Vargus.

Curious to hear others' recall of memorable games and the reasons why they still stick in your head.

1981 IU v Maryland NCAA...my parents took a bunch of people over to the game (me, my brother, their best friends and the best friends kids)...my brother and I got the worst of the seats...

If memory serves...we started a bit slowly...and then the tsunami...Zeke (Isaiah) just took over the floor...we looked like a completely different team (that year...the family went to Hawaii and saw the tournament there...the one that lives in infamy in IU bball and RMK lore)...it was total domination...and the team was just firing on all cylinders...Zeke running the point and pushing the ball...Wittman and Kitch...Landon Turner looking like an all-american...Tolbert sprinting the floor like a gazelle...

I just have never scene a team turn it on like that...

I was a freshman in high school and I turned to my brother and restated it to my dad a half.

"We are going to win the tournament...no one can touch this team now."

There were 11 or 12 IU dunks in that game, which was unheard of in that era and for a Knight team. So many people were talking up AK and BW and how they would steamroll IU.

I remember this one well. I remember reading a story, making the case that this game created our Ted Valentine frankenstein monster.
They just refused to lose that game. That's when I thought we had a chance to win it all. Even with the back to back losses late to Purdue and Illinois, that Wiscy game was still enough to keep the faith.

1976 IU vs Michigan NCAA Championship
1981 IU vs N. Carolina NCAA Championship
1987 IU vs Syrcuse NCAA Championship
1989 IU vs Michigan (Jay Edwards Buzzer Beater)
2011-2012 IU vs Kentucky (The Watshot)
2002 IU vs Duke
1981 IU vs Maryland (The Maryland Massacre)

That was one of the only IU games (bball or fball) that I ever missed completely in those days. Chasing after a girl brought me to a party off of Haynes Bridge Rd. in Alpharetta, GA that night. Anyway, what was the story with Valentine that night?

I don't remember the exact year, but we were living in Kentucky and a fellow Hoosier would come over to watch the games at our house. Luckily we picked up IU games out of Louisville as there was no internet or phone apps in the late 80's. Our friend built a new house, so we went over there to watch IU vs ILL.

This was the year Nick Williams hit the game winning shot with only 2 seconds to inbound the ball and take a long shot. We never went to their house to watch another game. Their house was jinxed.

I was at that game...I nearly passed out...not figuratively, literally....I had to sit down and breath...my head was spinning.

I need to go do some research and make sure I am not 'misremembering' (stole that from Wash DC), but I remember reading that this was Valentine's rookie season. He called the foul late in the game that gave Dean Garrett 2 free throws and allowed us to tie the game, and replay showed that the foul was somewhere between 'suspect' and absolute phantom foul. After the game Valentine saw the reply and felt he had robbed WI of the win and felt so bad he even wrote an apology note to Steve Yoder (WI head coach). The win was huge for IU as a loss would have cost us a share of the B1G title, (considering how the rest of the season played out, and I don't want to debate any space time continuum theories), and likely our #1 seed (which included the first 2 games in Indy)...so continuing to connect the dots, Ted doesn't make that phantom foul call, and we don't hang another banner in 87.

Lots of connecting dots in all that. But in Valentine's case, I'm willing to consider all of it as possibility.

Nick Anderson? 1989, right after Edwards had hit a tear drop from the corner to tie it?

I referenced that moment in another post yesterday. Stone cold dagger to the heart of an IU fan...was on spring break and it ruined my week.

I don't know if I remember a more dominant team, other than Pfi Slamma Jamma, than this team. They were a juggernaut. The UNC team they smoked for the title, was a very dominate Basketball team.

#1 IU vs #2 UCLA to start 1975-76 season - beatdown city.

IU vs UNLV in Final Four 1987. One of Knight’s absolute gems.

IU vs UK - Wat shot. Incredible ending.
The UCLA game was a 10:30pm (St. Louis time) start on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It was supposed to be a neutral court (The Arena, formerly the Checkerdome), but it was 2/3 to 3/4 IU, and every hotel downtown was packed with Hoosier fans. It rained so hard that there were leaks in the roof that made some people in the stands have to move. Great game from start to finish, and IU dominates them. First game for Gene Bartow as coach.

The thing is Nick seemed like a pretty good guy. But because of that shot every time I saw him in the NBA I would get a sour feeling in my heart.

1981 IU vs N. Carolina NCAA Championship
1987 IU vs Syrcuse NCAA Championship
1989 IU vs Michigan Jay Edwards Buzzer Beater
2011-2012 IU vs Kentucky, The Watshot
2002 IU vs Duke
I was thinking the 89 Michigan game. Edwards was so good that year. Knight was jumping up and down because he could not stand Frieder.

I used to play pickup with a guy here in Charlotte who was a reserve on that MD team. I can assure you, that was one of his most memorable games also, but in a nightmarish way. He said Lefty told them before the game that IU couldn't shoot and to pack it in and let them shoot from distance. He said they got a sinking feeling watching IU warmup. Said Lefty had video of only 1 game, and it must have been their worst shooting game of the year.

Couldn’t shoot? With Kitch AND Whitman? That’s some bad scouting.

i've never heard it mentioned by anyone, but i consider that game historical. (for reasons other than Wooden).

that was the first game in almost a decade, (at least since Alcindor's first game), that UCLA wasn't the best team on the floor..

yes, they lost a few over the yrs, but those were huge upsets. (just ask Houston).

not counting when UCLA, (NCAA champ that yr and the previous yr), lost big to their freshman team when Alcindor was a frosh, and frosh weren't eligible to play varsity.

Isiah was money that game also. Lefty was a character. I guess he figured Tolbert and Turner were the bigger threats and Isiah driving? No idea. He coached some great teams at Davidson too.

There were buzzer beaters after that, but for some reason that Illinois game hurt more. Maybe it was because I had a cousin at UI at the time.

Kind of random game, but 2007 IU versus No 4 wisky game with Alando Tucker. Assembly was rocking.

1962 Minn at IU.

Rayl hits long buzzer beater to send game to OT.

another to win game in OT.

finishes with 56 points.

IU over Duke in 2002.

Woodson having a great game to beat OSU in Btown when OSU had Clark Kellogg, Herb Williams, and Kelvin Ransey.

Jay Edwards buzzer beater to beat #1 Mich.

Wat shot.

most memorable season, 1966-67, win B10 after being last the yr before.

brutal defeats.

loss to UK in Dayton in the regional final, after beating them by like 30 earlier that yr.

UCLA over IU in St Louis in final 4.

UK at the 17th st fieldhouse, the John Ritter shot game.

1974 loss to Mich in playoff game to see who went to the NCAA

IU and Mich tied for B10 champ, but NCAA only allowed 1 team to go the NCAA.

no tv, had to listen on radio.

remember, Edwards' bomb from the corner only tied the game, so OT if Anderson doesn't drain it, and not sure how good IU's chances in OT were.

that said, i had a bad feeling as soon as it left Anderson's hand.

1. The Wat Shot. I also proposed to my wife that night (2nd best thing that happened that night).

2. Duke 02. My dumbass went to ISU for the night instead of staying at the dorms.

3. Kentucky 16. I really enjoyed watching Yogi carry us that year and capping it off with a SW 16 run. It’s always great to beat Kentucky when it matters.

4. National Title game in 87. I was too young to remember the game, but I’m including it anyway. I technically watched it.

1981 IU steamrolled the NCAA Tournament to win the 1981 NCAA Championship.
