It was televised. It was in Champaign mid-week. Our seats were near the camera. Long drive home.it was the IU-Mich playoff game to see who went to the NCAA that wasn't televised. (at least not in Btown).
that or the mad cow is getting worse.
Nope. IU lost in their rematch at Purdue fairly late in the season that year.UNLV '87 Hands down.
A month or so before that Alford, who was sick with the flu along with three or four other players gutted out a ten point win vs a pretty good Keady team.
Figured I'd throw this out to lighten up this place a little.
Throwing out the obvious choices (NCAA championship games) what game(s) have stuck in your head the most, over the years? I'm basing this on high level of play, not 'incident' driven (ie chair flying across the court, or anything having to do with Ted Valentine).
I'll throw out two...both based on the stress level induced during the games.
1. IU at OSU Feb 1991- ABC Sunday afternoon game, Keith Jackson and Vitale, frosh Bailey goes for 32, Cheney vs Jimmy Jackson, IU chokes the lead at end of regulation then loses at the end of OT. Yes it was a loss....but one of the better NCAA games I can remember. So much talent on the court that day. Both teams playing hardass defense.
2. IU vs LSU regional final 1987- war on the court, I was beyond exhausted when this game ended. This was IMHO IU's toughest challenge in the tourney (they actually handled UNLV much better than LSU). I still have nightmares about Jose Vargus.
Curious to hear others' recall of memorable games and the reasons why they still stick in your head.
#1 Definitely 87 championship, particularly LSU and UNLV, watched it when I was 12 on vacation and celebrated with other Hoosiers of Spring Break on the beachFigured I'd throw this out to lighten up this place a little.

November 30th, 2011. Big Ten/ACC Challenge. Indiana @ North Carolina State.
This is the game that showed everyone that IU WAS BACK. And it's the reason I still wear the shirt and have the avatar...because WE ARE BACK.
Loved that one too, but had forgot that, and it's definitely up there alone with MD's "get you a team" NC win and blowing up Illinois with JJ going nuts and crazy drop-step spin dunk. Check out my list above
"They don't want us coming back. But we are back!" -Tommy Basketball circa 2010 or some sh*t
I saw each of those in person from very good seats....along w Haston beating MichSt...from seats in top row of balcony...in the final 2 seats to the wall1. IU Duke 2002
2. IU Michigan for the outright BIG10 2012-2013
3. IU Kentucky "Watshot" 2011-2012
Ron Behagen, Jim Brewer and Clyde Turner were really good, but Minnesota and Musselman were always on the edge of mayhem. Believe Turner flipped off the IU crowd when he fouled out.The OSU brawl the year before cost Brewer and Behagen their seasons, and there was an uncomfortable racial tension that followed them around. Williams Arena was an impossible place to play and had a capacity nearly 3,000 greater than today. Their pregame warmup at home was pretty wild. One less prominent game, IU v Minn in Bloomington in winter 1973. That was the Winfield, Bohagen team with so much talent. Steve Downing got into foul trouble and Don Noort had to play substantial minutes. IU held on to win that night and with Minn losing in all places, Evanston, the Hoosiers went on to Nashville & FF in St. Louis.
I had the same feeling with Calbert led team when they crushed UCLA, my Dad said the same thing you did … unbeatable this year, but unfortunately we got to go against Duke and got hosed on officiating, it was a Championship team before Al got hurt, and still probably should have been. That was really the last great RMK team, though I felt they were turning it on for another run when Charlie Miller started to hit stride as a freshman, all went south from there.1981 IU v Maryland NCAA...my parents took a bunch of people over to the game (me, my brother, their best friends and the best friends kids)...my brother and I got the worst of the seats...
If memory serves...we started a bit slowly...and then the tsunami...Zeke (Isaiah) just took over the floor...we looked like a completely different team (that year...the family went to Hawaii and saw the tournament there...the one that lives in infamy in IU bball and RMK lore)...it was total domination...and the team was just firing on all cylinders...Zeke running the point and pushing the ball...Wittman and Kitch...Landon Turner looking like an all-american...Tolbert sprinting the floor like a gazelle...
I just have never scene a team turn it on like that...
I was a freshman in high school and I turned to my brother and restated it to my dad a half.
"We are going to win the tournament...no one can touch this team now."
Those 2 games were played within 3.5 weeks of each other. We thumped them at home when they were #4 and lost by 10 or 11 up there when they had slid a couple spots.Nope. IU lost in their rematch at Purdue fairly late in the season that year.
It was televised, though. I attended. Sat near the camera.
I kinda do, remember being over at a friends house that day, then losing interest as Troy Lewis tore us up. Was over before it was over, pretty sure, but there were a couple like that in the Glenn Robinson days that may have overlapped in my minddoes anyone remember actually seeing it on tv?
The game at Purdue was a month before the FF. The Bloomington game was in late January. Those 2 games were played within 3.5 weeks of each other. We thumped them at home when they were #4 and lost by 10 or 11 up there when they had slid a couple spots.
UNLV '87 Hands down.
YesI have some optimism for next season, but JHC wish one or both of Leal or Galloway could requalify for availability next year. Both are supposed to be good students … hell Leal's alternative was Stanford, is he honestly taking classes anymore at Btown S that mean anything, I mean he's got to be done, he's like the valedvictorian (sorry, I'm not googling for sp) ?
On the other hand, I think without them TJD will not be one and done and we'll get to see it play out with an experienced team and a couple new pieces that can make it good. Question is does Arch survive next near without better play and reason for optimism.

Agree, I think Leal's got to be done, and probably Galloway too, and only motivation is Mr. BBall is why they wouldn't. Hell, I graduated in 3 years, 30 years ago! My motivation was to get the hell out of there, and that was way before they started making HS and college intertwine to get you done early, and especially for athletes, which I wasn't after JHS. He's got to be done, but must have his reasons to play it out … IN Mr. BBall, would be my first guess?
Well, my guess is that he wants to be valedictorian, and to deliver a valedictory you need to be a graduating student, and for that you have to be a senior, at least in terms of class credits earned. It's to his and his game's advantage to have that senior year. No reason to project IU bball's needs on him.Agree, I think Leal's got to be done, and probably Galloway too, and only motivation is Mr. BBall is why they wouldn't. That may be, we'll see. I agree another year of HS competition will only make him better, but problem is, we could definitely use the shooting this year if he's done, which I would suspect he is if he's such a Brainiac that he turned down a scholarship to Stanford. Good for him though, I've always said if you really think it makes a difference in life where you get your undergraduate degree from … you probably didn't need to go in the first place and should have been working. The benefits of being a local legend may surpass that when he already knows college ball is the end.Well, my guess is that he wants to be valedictorian, and to deliver a valedictory you need to be a graduating student, and for that you have to be a senior, at least in terms of class credits earned. Umm, I was right in concurrence with you till I noticed this "No reason to project IU bball's needs on him" … he's our top rated recruit foreseeably next year, I sure the hell hope the staff didn't become duped with another Grant Gelon, et al., or Arch's seat will get volcanic.Well, my guess is that he wants to be valedictorian, and to deliver a valedictory you need to be a graduating student, and for that you have to be a senior, at least in terms of class credits earned. Anthony Leal has his own path. Like I said, no need to derail it. Especially if you value him as a complete person. As for Coach Archie Miller, he has 2 more seasons at least, even if Leal were to flip to Stanford in the signing (highly unlikely).Umm, I was right in concurrence with you till I noticed this "No reason to project IU bball's needs on him" … he's our top rated recruit foreseeably next year, I sure the hell hope the staff didn't become duped with another Grant Gelon, et al., or Arch's seat will get volcanic.

The point was that the most recent match up wasn’t a win, it was a defeat. It’s about context, which is relevant to those of us who followed the program at that time. Thanks, I don't see Ord's trash here. Going from memory 32 years ago, I said about a month and I was off by a few weeks. I don't google then paste info as my own knowledge as some do here.
My point; my favorite game by a long shot is UNLV a distant second is #12 and other sick kids gutting out a win over a very good Keady team.
Ran UNLV off the court.Beat them at their own game.
2/7/76 IU beats Michigan in OT 72-76 !!!!!!talking about a different game.
the IU-Mich playoff game, (neutral site, Champaign in 74), to see who represented the B10 in the NCAA, when only 1 school from a conf could go.
Yeah that’s why I ruled it out. Was looking for complete games, not crazy incidents within games. Like RMK's 3 techs vs ILL...walking across the court, who didn't think for a split second that he was going over there to drop Ted V on national TV?I guess honestly the one that is the most memorable is the chair toss event, but, it isn't my favorite.
Loved the IU/UCLA rematch in 92....can't remember seeing an IU team look that good, that team should have hung a banner. They were taking it to Duke before Valentine and the split ACC crew fouled out our entire starting 5. Also the Patterson game, I think that was the championship of what used to be called the Big Apple (NYC) preseason NIT tourney. Andre went bananas that game, looked like a top 5 lottery pick. Too bad he couldn't find consistancy in RMK's system. And Haston's shot vs MSU, I was in Vegas at the CES show and watched the second half at the Hilton sports book with several people. Fun afternoon.#1 Definitely 87 championship, particularly LSU and UNLV, watched it when I was 12 on vacation and celebrated with other Hoosiers of Spring Break on the beach
#2 comeback against Duke in 2002
#3 Destruction of UCLA, I think in Calbert's final 4 year
#4/#5 tie taking down both UK and OSU when we were good with Cody and VO … woke up both days with massive hangovers and boldly told my wife, thanks for waking me up, we're taking them down today, and was right on both … talking out my ass, just had a feeling in AH on both days, we were due
#5a Haston's shot to beat MSU, who I remember being #1 or close
#5b Blowing the F**K out of Duke, when Patterson scored like 40 in pre-season, maybe '96
IU was clicking on all cylinders vs UNLV. Was fun to watch after enduring the wrestling match vs LSU a few days prior.Ran UNLV off the court.
Embarrased Tark at his own uptempo game
Because there's zero moderation here, I have so many idiots on ignore that I lose a lot of context in some of these posts. Not even sure who ordfan is now, but I'll lay dollars to donuts I have him on ignore. Thanks, I don't see Ord's trash here. The OT game was the second one against UM and was in Bloomington. Jim Crews got the ball up around the hoop and Benson tipped it in to force OT. The first game against Michigan was in AA. It was close, but IU won in regulation.2/7/76 IU beats Michigan in OT 72-76 !!!!!!
Almost each and every time IU played on the road in that era it was a nail-biter. IU played Michigan twice during the regular conference home and away series. IU went on to play Michigan in the NCAAT Championship game which, by-the-way, was a great beatdown of Michigan by 20...undefeated team for the ages!!!
But the second game against Michigan was on the road in Michigan. That is the one that really sticks out. IU with those great players got behind during the game at the end by...what? 3 points? Undefeated season in peril...
IU hits a free throw...and misses the second...if my memory serves me... IU's Kent Benson grabs the rebound in a sea of Michigan players underneath and we tie the game going into OT! Impossible situation saved on a totally phenominal season. IU players refused to lose.
We can thank Steve Grote for missing the front end of a one-and-one which would have probably iced the game.2/7/76 IU beats Michigan in OT 72-76 !!!!!!

hate to admit...but I remember the 2013 game more nowadays. And for all the wrong reasons.Indiana - Syracuse.
The one where Daryl Thomas kicks it out to Keith Smart for the game winner. Not to be confused with the one where IU could not get the ball inside against a zone defense.
It also didn’t hurt that the regional semi-final and final was played in Assembly Hall.If I had to name one team, it would be 1981 IU. 1981 IU absolutely dominated the 1981 NCAA Tournament. Once Landon Turner flipped a switch to near All-Amercan level play, that team was loaded. 1981 IU crushed a really good Maryland team and ran away from North Carolina in the final. They were never challenged.
