Reactions: IU? I'm Fine
Then the USSR Soviet coaches and players waved arms raised to the IU Assembly Hall fans and the IU fans started booing them. Fans were laughing and cheering when RMK took the team off the floor. Exhibition game over. Knight points at and later tells the IU AD, "You better straighten this F'r out. We had a lane violation and this a$$h@le's calling technical fouls. You better straighten this (guy) out or I'm taking my team off the floor..." to paraphrase or words to that effect heard on TV. It was surreal. The Soviet team and coaches didn't know what to do. Old white haired Soviet coach looked around completely befuddled. I think the officials walked over to the score table, signed the book, and walked off the floor. Game over. Edwards and Jones were Freshmen at IU. Only months after winning IU Banner #5.

what gets lost in the telling, was that IU was headed for a serious butt whipping..

the Ruskies had too much for IU that day.

no doubt Bobby realized it too.

Was present at some great ones: UNLV and Syracuse in '87. Also at home vs PU and Illini that year. '88 at home vs #2 Boilers. '86 vs Illini and PU were great games too. IU held PU to 1 point over last 5 of regulation and the 5 minute OT. '01 vs Illini at the United Center.

On TV, at UM in '87, '89, '93 and of course '13 all come to mind. The '86 game at Illinois was incredibly intense the whole way. '80 Conference winner vs OSU in OT on final day of the season. LSU '87, Marquette '76, Alabama '76 were in doubt the entire way. Heart attack city!!

Too many excruciating losses too.

I went back and looked at various articles the day after the Soviet game...NY Times, LA Times...all had storied titled "Knight pulls team from court" which actually was not accurate. But even today, that's how this night is remembered by many.

That was the Soviet Olympic Team that included Lithuania at the time.

didn't all Soviet teams include Lithuania? bwg

i'd forgotten it was the Olympic team.

can't recall the makeup, but they generally had a beast at center.

i'll bet Fife still thinks of those final seconds, that missed FT, that IU rebound, as one of his reprieves in life.

Good one...yes we were not getting a very good account of what was actually happening on TV. Played out in bizarro fashion on the tube. I think that was the first televised IU game since the 'Cuse championship game many months prior...IU rated fairly high preseason, some had Keith Smart as a preseason AA, Edwards and Jones arriving...then this first preseason game fiasco...the 87-88 season started in a very auspicious manner.

The Soviet game wasn't on TV? Pal and I were asked a couple of questions by a guy with a tape recorder on the way out. No idea what outlet but they knew we were down close enough to hear the chatter.

The game was forfeited by BK and IU and Burr and staff left the floor with the ball. Crabb told everyone that concludes today's contest and to drive safely. Nobody pulled any team off the floor. Recently a player who was there but not near the table and a former sports talk guy in Indy misremembered it so I get that people think what they think.

watched some video of this game....skinny young kids playing against men. Had to be a shock for Jay Edwards, first game on the Hall court and getting pushed around by some big thick 25 yr old man named Sergi or Valerie.
If you can find a recording of it, Todd Jadlow was on an Indy radio show and told the story of exactly what transpired. I know there are some misunderstandings out there, but Jadlow’s re-telling was the accurate view of what happened. A very peculiar ending.

Exactly...including former player who recently got it wrong.

Exactly...including a former player (Jadlow) who recently got it wrong, although in his defense the radio twit misrepresented the question badly. Dakich like with most things... has told the story both ways
