i walk and play faster than most 60+ yos with a cart. And that isn’t because I’m good.

get your steps in Kurt…. You need em!
I also walk and have no problem keeping up with those that ride instead. Those that ride in carts (and I do occasionally - like if it looks like it's going to rain or it's mandatory) don't automatically play faster. The slowest two-some in our Thursday afternoon league ride in a cart. They're super slow players. We try not to let them go out in the front of any of us.

True and in fairness, some of the older guys who walk move really quick if they hit it straight. It's not about hitting long, but rather straight and quick (not taking 3 practice swings).

I just happen to try and play ready golf too. If a guy shorter than me is searching for his ball on the other side of the fairway, I'm going to hit and keep things moving. Too many stand and wait, even if they aren't helping look.

Agreed. It's amazing how much better I do after hitting balls for 30 mins prior AND practicing chipping and putting for a few.

Some good golfers (talking the college quality guys) can come in hot to the first tee and continue on their way to a 78.
I used to play a regular Sunday game with a rotation of 5-6 guys. The only shit part was it was an 8am tee time. Now, i was in my early 30's so I wasn't broken down like I am now (only partially kidding). So a few practice swings and let's go. I can't do that now.

The thing that sucks for me is I was close to a single digit handicap in my mid 20's. Then life happens and you can't practice, etc. Now, golf is a drinking exercise but I still get pissed when i can't drill a pitching wedge 150 on a rope like i used to be able to do. It doesn't ruin it but my mind wanders back 20 years far too often.

Ready golf is the way to go. Only time we really closely watch honors and other rules we ignore in the interest of speeding up play (and don't create an advantage) is when playing in a tournament. Everyone tries to follow the rules in a tournament. Well, most everyone. I played with a guy during a tournament who cheated by a couple inches on every putt until I told him to stop. He marked his ball with a large coin IN FRONT of his ball (which is OK, but unusual). When he put the ball back on the green, he put his ball IN FRONT of his coin (which obviously isn't OK). I asked him if he thought those two inches were absolutely necessary for him to play. He was a dumbass. I didn't bother making him take a penalty stroke on each of the first few times I noticed him doing it and I beat him by several strokes anyway. Played with another guy that I noticed was teeing up about six inches in front of the tee markers on every hole until I told him to stop. He claimed he didn't notice he was doing it, which was BS.

Usually when I come across these guys, they aren't actually in contention anyway and are just cheating to make themselves feel better.

I've gotten better at enjoying being mediocre.

Yep. I was a 6 index and getting better at my peak in 2008 (six straight years of shore duty allowed more play and practice). Went back to sea for two years and my handicap inched up until I was probably a 15 or so when I left the ship. While stationed on the ship in San Diego, I still played when in port and I had the time, but I rarely had time to practice. Since leaving the ship my handicap has ranged from 11 to 16 because I still don't practice more than hitting a few balls or taking a few chips before a round. The handicap trending up or down are solely due to how often I'm playing. I'm sure I could get back to single digits if I made an effort and practiced, which I plan to do when I retire from my civilian job, but in the meantime, I just play and enjoy it even if I don't play as well as I used to. Also, I can't hit it 300+ yards like I could up until about 10 years ago and that I miss even more than low scores sometimes. I do miss shooting in the 70s. I've only broken 80 twice in 11 years. Things have to really be clicking pretty well for me to shoot anything better than 88 or so these days. I'm more likely to shoot 100 than 80. ;)

I don’t think you want to catch that bullet.

Undefeated against the crazy...

Except the first wife. That one left a mark.

I would’ve paid good money to see Kurt, McNutt, and RMK play a round of golf together back when RMK was in his prime. Bets on who would’ve made it out alive?

Bob Knight is my golf spirit animal...which is why I gave it up a long time ago. Realized how stupid I was being getting that pissed off that the silly little white ball would just not go to it's home where it belonged.

Same here. I hate - absolutely loathe - playing a course without a range to warm up. I can’t think of much I hate more than putting my shoes on at the car and teeing off five minutes later.
Opposite for me...I usually get worse the more loose I get. I've always been that way. Even back when I was in better physical shape, and playing 3-4 rounds a week. Best shots I hit are always in the first few holes.

Then we should pair up on a scramble. I’m at my best holes 5 - 16. I peter out for the last two. I’ve twice blown a chance at 78 or 79 by tripling the last hole.

Ha Ha! Your strong holes to appear to be the ones that I loosen up on, and just don't play well. I usually do rally the last few holes, if something worth finishing strong for is on the line.

My entire adult life, whether I'm playing multiple rounds a week, or struggling to get in 3-4 rounds a year (current situation), I've been remarkable at finding ways to shoot 80. I've gone 4 under the last 4 holes to shoot 80 before. I've gone 8 over the last 4 holes to shoot 80 before. And pretty much every combination in between. The course, and tee boxes, usually don't matter either. I shot 81 at Cog Hill soon after the BMW a few years back, from similar tee boxes to what they played. The very next day I shot 80 at my little home course that I'd played probably 1000 rounds on.

Obviously a lot of it is mental. But for whatever reason, the more loose I get, the less solid I hit the ball.

It’s such a frustrating game. I love beer way more than I should but I avoid it as much as I can when playing. I’m too much of a competitive meathead and it severely affects my game.

The first time I shot 80 I was operating on two hours of sleep and was severely hungover. Go figure.

I'm one of the most competitive sports nuts you'll ever meet. I HATE losing. When I was a kid I would play with tears pouring out during the game if we were losing. I'd launch into Tourettes like tantrums on the field if things were going poorly. And I shoot between 100 and 110. Imagine how that feels...

I would not play if I shot over 100. I wouldn’t be able to handle it. I almost quit forever a few weekends ago when I followed a 42 up with a 46 and was striking well but couldn’t chip.
