Offense

Obviously Michigan is highly favored. Looking at the numbers, all is as one might expect for a team that was in the College Football Playoff a few short months ago. The Wolverines are 17-2 since last year and are looking for their 44th Big 10 Championship and their first back to back Titles since 2003-04.

Running Back Blake Corum comes into Saturday’s contest 4th in the country in rushing yards (611) and leading the nation in rushing touchdowns (10). Corum is averaging 6.6 yards per tote. Michigan has a total of 19 rushing TDs on the season which also leads the nation.

Quarterback J.J. McCarthy has a completion percentage of .786 which is beyond efficient.

As a team Michigan is 6th in the country in Scoring Offense (45.4 ppg), 8th in Red Zone Offense (.964), and 13th in Rushing Offense (221.8 ypg).

Looking at the Wolverine’s PFF Team Grades they are 5th in Rush and 14th in Receiver.

Defense

There isn’t any drop-off on the defensive side of things for College Football’s winningest program. Michigan enters the game:

*6th in Scoring Defense (11.6 ppg)

*7th in Total Defense (252.0 ypg)

*10th in Passing Defense (157.8 ypg)

*14th in Rushing Defense (94.2 ypg)

*18th in sacks (15.0 / 3.0 per game)

The Maize and Blue are +4 in turnovers (+0.8 / g).

Looking at PFF Grades the Wolverines rank 1st in Tackling, 3rd in Defense, tied for 4th in Run D, 7th in Coverage, and 16th in Pass Rush.

It’s not difficult to see why Michigan grades as the no. 2 team overall (tied) by PFF. You don’t win 11 National Championships and produce 3 Heisman Trophy winners by being bad at football.

"Stats are for Losers". 😉🍺😎

Unfortunately, in this case they appear present an accurate portrayal of the reality of the task at hand... 😖

Any good news here? 1) It's a trap game. Michigan has Penn St next week. 2) The Michigan guy on the Hoosier Huddle Round Table pod said we might be able to test their LBs in pass coverage, especially over the middle. He also suggested we could be able to challenge their run d on the edge. 3) We've played 'em close of late including the 2020 dub.

That would take us throwing to Barner over the middle. I would like to see the RBs run seem routes out of the backfield, hopefully against their LBs. Think Lucas 1 on 1 with a LB?

Michigan's putrid OOC schedule notwithstanding the Wolverines do look like they are improving every week.

Now that Big10 play is here they are facing substantially better competition.

The Maryland win is looking better and I do think that Iowa's defense is legit.

Maryland was effective in running between the tackles with large size running backs but curiously did not adapt to that advantage.

Michigan was able to move at will on Iowa the first half and frustratingly Harbaugh turtled the offense in the second half.

Imo, Maryland was the better of the 2 wins as they were more balanced on both sides of the ball.

I'd love to see Michigan start throwing downfield but McCarthy has shown great inconsistency in doing so. He overthrows...alot. I get it he's young so it's hard to argue with .786 completion percentage, 0 picks and #5 nationally in QB rating of 187.

Corum has been very fun to watch. He reminds me of Mike Hart with his ball security but more of Barry Sanders with his running style. Great speed, hard to see, good blocker, good power and elusive. Nationally, #4 in total yards and #1 in TDs at 10 he will be a tough stop for the Cream and Crimson on Saturday.

Go Blue!

We're familiar with overthrows...😖

Hopefully, your QB does it more often than ours on Saturday....🍺
