It can be argued that he was given a great program, which happened to be the one that DeVries’ built from scratch. DeVries has built two programs from scratch, and improved them dramatically over the prior coach, which I would argue, in the day of NIL and the degree of yearly roster changes, is much more valuable than anything McCollum did.
And, his last stint was his best work, at the Big 12 level, returning one player at a team that one 9 games the year prior. A conference which put 7 teams in the tourney this year - 3 of which he beat, including Kansas at Allen Fieldhouse, the first time in program history.
This will all play out for everyone to see, but lower conference success (see Archie Miller) doesn’t always transfer to the next level, which is why I believe DeVries is a safer bet, because he repeated it on the big stage, which will be required at Indiana. This was too much of a jump/risk for McCollum in Dolson’s calculations, and I agree.
