Not sure he was ever a serious candidate. I know many love him but I think his lack of D1 experience did him in. Sounds like dolson wanted someone who has already navigated the portal. Devries had a top 6 portal class last year and way more D1 experience. It might end up being a big mistake on mccullum but im guessing that's dolsons thinking. Also hopefully this works since we passed on Dusty last year by not firing woodson.

We'll probably never know whether McCollum turned us down or we had some initial interest but moved on, or never pursued him, unless he decides to say something about it (which he's probably smart enough not to do).

I wouldn’t doubt if Dolson spoke to many coaches, including McCollum. I also think McCollum would be a good fit and could nail it. There is just a little more risk there IMO. His numbers have been gaudy, but that’s not the whole picture. Like we found out with May, timing is a big factor, and CDD seems like a good fit all around.

He gets two years from me to earn any more.

I give him two years given the nil and new landscape. We will again likely have the top nil in the conference

Hopefully the injtial contract is no more than 4 seasons. AD's give these guys 7 or 8 years to begin and its very dangerous. Especially with NIL. You'll have a better idea after year 2 to extend or not.

Listen to the AfterDark podcast. Goodman said Dolson talked to McCollum a couple of times. They also had Doug McDermott on who knows DD extremely well and loves him. Said that everyone assumes he went to Creighton because of his Dad, but DD recruited him before his Dad was even there and he loved him and wanted to play for him. The general consensus is DD works his ass off and knows bball and plays a modern style offense, and his teams will defend. Should have made the tourney and had some really impressive wins, losing one of his top players after 8 games. Is he the guy that can get us to a NC? I don't know, that's a really high bar to clear, but from all I've heard we're going to have a team that gives effort and plays hard and I am convinced will get us back to the top quarter of the conference and in the tournament every year.

For all the guys wringing their hands over McCollum, I'm sure he's going to be a great coach, but I'll trust SD who talked with both guys and it sounds to me like chose DD.

McCollum has the high celing but like I said if your going to take a chance McCollum should of got the job has was more potential. I hope I'm wrong and DeVries is better but I don't see it.

And if SD spoke to McCollum more than once....its possible he turned IU down, not the other way around. There's plenty of crying over spilled milk going on here. These decisions go both ways, which narrows the window dramatically. I think IU got lucky with the timing. My guess is that the other shoe to drop was Brownell after the tournament.

Yeah, not buying that. Organizations give people multiple interviews before not hiring them for entry level sales positions. I don’t think Dolson having multiple conversations with him indicates anything beyond that he did his due diligence. I also don’t believe there was another shoe. When you find the right fit then you box them up and go home. Dolson thinks he found the fit. We will see.

We have to give the guy a chance. But with NIL, our level of NIL, and the transfer portal, you need to succeed very quickly. No more recruit and let them develop, no more expectations of a weak first and second year while the new guy builds the program.
He needs success in year one.

People that really know basketball....especially college coaches, have a much higher regard for this hire than many of the fans on this board. Who should I trust? The coaches....who have invested and developed their careers and know the coaching candidates personally, or the wise counsel with a keyboard and foam bad call brick on their coffee stand?

Here's my response: have you talked with both DD and BM about the IU job? Maybe trust the guy who did, and not a bunch of folks on a fan board who think they know better than the guy who has talked with both? Whether SD decided on DD, or was turned down by BM, listening to After Dark and Aaron Torres, both feel that DD is a better fit at IU.
