IU paid a record buyout for DeVries

Sage take out of you.
Let’s see once the 20+ purchased 25 years olds are gone.

Hope for the best.
Prepare for the past.

But the hair is still perfect.
Ahh…good to still see some of the old school “basketball only” fans who hate to see any football success. Brings one right back to 1981.

Hint: you want your football team to do really well, even if you don’t like the sport. It’s the lynchpin at every P4 school to the money.

If basketball, or soccer or swimming was the same, I’d be rooting like hell for them to succeed because the future depends on it.

But he was already in the black by his brilliant hire of Cignetti. Football is the cash cow and will cover the basketball error if it proves to be one.
You cannot explain it to these guys on here. They don’t understand any of the economics of it. They just think:

Football: bad
Basketball: good

You absolutely want both the driver and passenger to do well on this economic vehicle. Not hard to figure out the driver.

I'd encourage everyone to watch the Field of 68 After Dark podcast last night with Goodman and Doug McDermott.

Here's some of Goodman's commentary about the search.

And obviously, Dolson shot for the stars at first, right?
  • Brad Stevens gave me a comment fairly early on saying he wasn't interested.
  • Dusty May had already been at Michigan for a year, so he wasn't leaving. And I honestly think he fits better at Michigan than Indiana anyway.
  • They tried TJ Otzelberger. He's happy at Iowa State, loves his AD, loves that situation. He's not going anywhere.
  • They weren't going to mess with Chris Beard and Will Wade because of the baggage, whether it's right or wrong, whether it's accurate or not. There is still baggage and a perception with both of those guys, so they didn't go that route.
  • So then it gets down to Buzz Williams, which I think I've made my position fairly clear on
  • Mick Cronin and his hefty buyout.
  • Mark Byington had a big buyout as well at Vandy.
  • So then you're getting down to Ben McCollum, who was in the mix for weeks. They met with him a couple of times.
  • Darian DeVries was in there as well.
  • Greg McDermott, they felt like 60 years old, probably wasn't the right guy at this time.
They wanted to get somebody in there that could maybe stick around for more than three, four years. So they went with McDermott's kind of protégé, one of the guys in his coaching tree.
I genuinely hope DeVries works out. I'm rooting for him hard -- because this program I've spent my life loving has just hit the skids. And my enthusiasm has waned hard because of it.

But I'd be remiss if I didn't comment on the part in blue. We've discussed it ad nauseum here. I simply don't understand why we'd voluntarily handcuff ourselves like this.

But the "insiders" said stevens was a done deal. LOL! And of course they did not even entertain beard. The whole about Mcdermotts age is just dumb. If he can win for 6 or 7 years you take him after the fiasco of the last 8 years

Allen won his 11th game in the first game of his 3rd season. Get your point, but your numbers are way off.
Correct. He coached the bowl game the season before his first full season, which makes his sports reference entry look like and additional season.

McDermott had a horrific record at Iowa State. Can you imagine the shit storm that would have happened if we’d hired him?

I really like Beard but other schools passed on him. We aren’t unique in that respect. Ole Miss takes in all types of coaches that are on a reformation path.

Really? Conversely, I can't fathom anyone not understanding that.

I think we did well.
,

Well, we won't know whether we did or not for some time. I hope you're right. But I've hoped that before -- more than once. So you'll have to forgive me for being a bit wary.

Look, I was advocating for us to hire Bruce Pearl decades ago. I thought then, and now, that marking him off the list as "not an IU kind of coach" was a really dumb unforced error. And I'd say I've been pretty well vindicated in having that view. Our cherished basketball program has become depressingly ordinary.

You think that the folks at Auburn are regretting not having similarly handcuffed themselves?

Yeah we'll see.

I'm only commenting on why Beard and Wade were very unlikely. I understand why Whitten would say NO... She's got a mission. I approve of it. Make the university great, including ethics.

I did not want Wade. Beard I'd have been OK with, don't think he'd embarrass us, and people can have second chances. I wanted Pearl 10 years ago, or even 5 or 6, but not since , wanted a younger guy.
