Maria knocks out power to entire island of Puerto Rico

Given their economic conditions, this double hurricane whammy has to devastating. It is still hot down there, the power being out is a real issue. And tourism is going to be devastated.
And unfortunately, the people facing the greatest threat are the ones who can't afford to spend the rest of the warm season in New York. It's still awfully early, but I worry this will make both Florida and Houston look like a day at the park.

Peegs posted this morning that his wife is originally from Puerto Rico, and that in addition to her entire family they still have many friends that live there.Sounds like it will be a tense several days in his household...

College roommate operates some nursing homes in PR. Haven't heard from him yet and probably won't for a while. Something like half the population lives below the poverty level. Frankly, that fact alone is disturbing given that we're talking about Americans here. Beautiful place and beautiful people.

It's going to be so difficult waiting to hear from loved ones there.

Restoration expected to take months. Damn.

All islands touched by Irma and Maria were completely destroyed. Absolutely horrifying.

Even with hurricane proof building standards, a direct 5 hit on Florida would be nearly as devastating.

Given the progression of climate change, if our politicians were solely interested in the long term, instead of the next election, would we be considering the permanent relocation of peoples instead of rebuilding?
