Pay a $6 Mil buyout for a dude that has never won a tourney game. WVU was scratching and clawing for the last at large spot?
IU is rock bottom in the sense that the name no longer means anything. It's now equivalent to UF in basketball. However this hire turns out, IU as currently stands is no longer IU.

Shocking.

I hope IU turns into UF basketball lol. UF hired a unknown coach from SAn Francisco and in year 3 has them as a #1 seed

See Mark pope. UK paid 6 million and pope hadn’t won a single ncaa tournament game.

Precisely. A no name.
It took you until now to figure that out?
Previously, one could say the candidates were at least in the same realm. The job was still a job people wanted. I thought the hires were awful and said so. Woodson you couldn't tell if the brand name still meant anything because it seems someone had a gun pointed to their head and told hire him or else.
DeVries has won a tournament game, beat Wichita State. Also, the year we lost to that athletic Miami team, Drake had a nice lead on Miami with 5 minutes to go, before running out of gas.
A first four game? So basically they weren't good enough to be in the real tourney.

If the best thing people say about someone is that they are a hard worker don't worry about winning a title. Maybe with the NIL fund they can pay for the Harlem Globetrotters and overcome any coaching weakness.

I'm not a math guy but I think I was reading WVU was #255 in some offensive efficiency statistic? To hire this candidate is offensive to offensive.

I think the low point may have been losing to the Fort Wayne Mastadons by 20 points. Not to mention that the Mastadons beat them two years in a row. The NCAA basketball highlight during Woody’s tenure was the cheerleaders teaming up to get the basketball down from the backboard. If Saint Mary’s had not backed down at the end of the game, they would’ve won by over 40 points. Woody’s Big Ten basketball record is two games over 500. In four years Woody never was able to establish small ball. Woody’s reign of mediocrity ended with a back court of sixth year seniors who could neither shoot free throws nor three-point shots. At his first senior night Leal said let’s run it back again and they did - missing the tournament for a second year in a row. Gallo was paid seven figures to resurrect the program and he left with a whimper complaining about the fans. And then the Hoosiers threw in the towel after missing the NCAA field. All of this with one of the biggest payrolls in college basketball.

And now the Hoosiers will be gearing up to throw even more money at the program. Bottom line it’s hard to pin down the low point of the program. And let’s give a shout out to the NCAA for turning college basketball into a league of one and dones.. One of the few things that most fans can agree on is that college basketball is not as good as it used to be.

On the flipside of the issue, I think Woody’s high point may have been benching the players who broke curfew at the Northwestern game.

take a breath and don't take this the wrong way, but can you list your credentials in drawing these conclusions? Met DD, or McCollum or any of the other candidates? Maybe listen to an 11 year NBA guy who was recruited by and played under him; our own AD who talked to he, McCollum and several other candidates; a national writer who knows all these guys; and his former head coach at Creighton. He may be a spectalular failure, but there's a lot that sounds promising. Let's see what he does at the press conference and more importantly over the next couple weeks and then see how we are feeling.

Cracks me up how many folks want to second guess our own AD, who worked in the program under RMK and hired Cignetti. Sounds to me like he could have had McCollum and chose DD. DD could have had the Iowa job and chose IU. Why not take a step back and see how this goes before deciding you know better than our AD, who hired Cignetti, wants desparately for our bball program to succeed and has taken a huge career gamble on the guy?

DeVries is not the coach I'd have gone after if I was Scott Dolson.

However....

1) We don't know what all took place behind closed doors. We don't know who was reached out to, if anybody else received a "pre" offer non-offer, etc.

2) It's easy to assume that the reason X, Y, or Z didn't happen is because we didn't consider them or make a call. That certainly could be the case. Maybe DeVries was first on the list. But it's also possible that feelers did go out, but were unrequited.

3) Whoever any of us did or didn't want, Darian DeVries is now our coach. So while I won't feign excitement, I will say that he has my support 100%. I hope he's successful, I want him to be successful, and I'll keep a totally open mind and let the results speak for themselves.

I hoped we would land someone that could come in the door a top 4 or 5 coach in the conference. We just outbid Iowa for our head coach.
What other program got a guy this year that we should have had? NC State? lol I mean, if we're supposed to have beaten out someone other than Iowa? Which program is it?

If Kentucky had an opening this year, Devries may have been on it. Or Michigan, or Louisville. Like May was and others. Maybe they interviewed him last year.

A few here want a 70 year old 'proven winner' who bangs waitresses when the wife's not around and hire hookers for the recruits. To prove we're a 'blue blood'!

The athletic directors of blue bloods do the real work, and hire other guys. Good, solid up and comers.

We did the same. We're a blue blood again.

1. What he did @ Drake is crazy. On par with what Cig did for IUFB. Research is good. Drake was abysmal. Like, years of IUFB. ONLY one coach since 1993 was above .500-- Keno Davis in 2008(28-5). All DeVries did was win 73% of his games...won 3 conference titles, and went to 3 NCATT , in 6 seasons. His 150 wins is second most in school history. That's Cig like work.

2. Went 19-13 @ WVU. Took over a gutted team. Won 9 games the previous year. Was picked to finish 13th in B12. They finished 7th. And did so w/o their best player, his boy--Tucker. A 2x MVC POY. And without another starter. Beat Gonzaga--ya know, the team that drilled IU. Beat Kansas--@ Kansas. Beat AZ...Beat Iowa State. WVU should have been an NCAAT team. Huge snub. And had he had the services of his son...there wouldn't have been any questions.

He's not the sexy hire. Big name we all wanted. BUT nor was Kelsey at UL. Comes highly regarded.

Dud3 can coach.

The low point of Woodson's impact on IU was reading your post.

He's gone. Let it go ...

I mean, what does a "sexy" hire even mean for these people? Proven winners at major schools rarely leave for another school without a connection or running away from some issue. It has nothing to do with the Indiana basketball brand.

I can’t tell if you are serious or DWS dumb. IU has been waaaay down for a long time. But it isn’t about this hire. This hire proves we still have something people are interested in. And that dude so many were clamoring for… Beard. He was BEGGING to come here. So feel free to leave, or just enjoy the change and see how things play out.

Not happy but I will support DeVries thought we could do better seemed really nervous today at the press conference hope he proves me wrong.
