How are we not talking about the brewing bribery-for-pardon scandal?

That’s hot
We go out one night to a bar, dancing, all the things. Throughout the whole night she's rubbing up on chicks and I'm like (as I had some.....concerns..... by this point) HELL YEAH, LFG!.

Then, nothing happened. No 2v1 nothing.

Yes, I still remember this 27 years later.

That certain older gentleman with a recognizable last name did nothing but party. Nothing else. And he made a certain famous IU soccer alum his Smithers for partying. Rewarded him with a distributorship. Like a lotto ticket

Her: "Where do you want to watch the game?"

Me: "I dunno? Dubliner? Stan's Blue Note? Milo's?"

Her: "Baby Dolls?"

No idea how accurate this is, but in the world of alcohol production and distribution, people still tell this story:

When Busch bought the Cards, he wanted to rename Sportsman's Park to Budweiser Stadium. MLB told him he couldn't name the stadium after a product. He complained about Wrigley, and was told that it was named after a person, not a product. So he asked if he could name the stadium after himself, and MLB said yes. So he renamed it Busch Stadium.

Before he left New York, he called STL and told his VP, you have twelve months to get a "Busch Beer" on the shelves.

Well fwiw that’s the story I’ve always heard too. Sportsman’s park today is the site of the boy’s and girl’s club. Which is kind of neat.

My grandfather did the lettering on the old Busch cans way back when. When commercial artists were a thing. And my other grandpa who died when I was little worked on the line. Every fri they got two cases of beer to take home. In the summer months he slept in the yard

Their sale hurt a lot of folks

They just had their big distributor Convention last week in Nashville. Dana white. Manning. Ton of celebs there. I have friends who do marketing for them that set up for it. Just a miserable job

I probably know people who were there. Heidelberg is still one of the biggest Bud distributors in the Midwest. Their HQ is (was?) in Toledo, and all their big shots used to drink and eat at the joint I used to run. Fun guys. So much money wrapped up in that. They treated us like royalty, because they liked us, but the truth is, distributing to restaurants is small potatoes. They made their money at the grocery store. It's incredible how many people roll on up through a Wal-Mart and buy a pack of TP and three cases of Bud Ice.

Interesting. I don’t know anything about that world. My buddies who do marketing for them for that stuff are at outside agencies.

Way back when being a sales rep was the way in there. They’d give you a stipend and you would buy people beers at bars and always keep the brand logo facing out. My longtime gf’s cousin drove the Lady Luck truck 🤣. Not sure if u remember but that was a big promo thing at restaurants and bars and events. When I was a kid getting into AB was like a big local deal

They probably had a ton of disposable cash to spend

Yeah, that happens. Depends on the state how it happens, because of different rules regarding free booze, but that's a major part of the marketing plan. Basically, alcohol distributers use bars and restaurants to raise brand awareness, but make their money at the grocery store. So, I'd have a guy come in and convince me to sell a particular wine, and market it big time, with posters and specials and table tents, but he knew he was never going to sell me more than three cases a week. But if people liked it, he might eventually sell 100 cases a week to Kazmaier's just around the corner.

Makes sense. I see all those guys at the grocery store damn near every time I’m there

I was at the store just yesterday and saw these Pepsi guys setting up a big special display. Two of them. Probably earning $25/hour each. For guys wearing polos with drink logos on them, they exuded BDE. And the display was top-notch. They know where their bread is buttered.

I wonder if they get commissions

I had a girlfirend who ended up being a lesbian. At least, as long as I tracked it afterwards (and I did) she never went back to dudes. Which warmed my heart slightly but not much.

I mean, the signs were there. She had an dire aversion to skirts and dresses. And like sweater vests. Again, signs were there. I was also her first so I guess just a trial period of some sort. A confirmation really.
Didn't the butch haircut give it away?

I'd be someone's designated driver for a distributorship
