Good job washed up old grandpa

Win or lose Woodson coached differently than most games I’ve watched him coach.
No he didn't .... the players executed down the stretch ... that's the difference, not his rotations.

He's a coach, not a puppet master .. first half is always scripted, which I hate, but whatever. 2nd half he goes with the guys that deserve it. Sometimes, there's not five that deserve it ..

That's been consistent since day 1.

You only say that because IU won. The ones locked in finish every game but when we lose ... The people who have no clue blame the ever popular 'half time adjustments' and/or 'rotations'.. or many other things they barely understand.
I think it was the first game of the season he finished with Cupps playing alongside X and Galloway because they were more successful than any other line-up. Lots of "common wisdom" about CMW and the team gets started on these forums and then turns out to be nonsense.

That's an interesting question and it's a fine line to walk.

I notice Purdue fans talk like their fanbase is almost all alumni. They take a real elitist approach to their fandom. I guess I like the fact that IU Basketball has a broader appeal. That said, if you're an alumni, you're part of an extended family. I was IU, my kids both IU alum, even though my wife is a Western Michigan alum, her graduate studies took place at IU. It's in the blood.

Compare that to ND who has a pretty small base. They have their "subway alum", a lot of them haven't even seen the campus, let alone attended school there. Kind of like the Walmart Wolverines. It makes me cringe when I hear those fanbases talk smack. Hearing a Domer fan say something like "we're going to pound you" .... Sigh.

Somebody else mentioned the frontrunner thing. I guess that's it

Certainly agree, sometimes there’s not five that deserve to play.

I disagree about second half. In three years has there ever been a game he changed the second half starting five based on the first half play?

Spending his retirement coaching the college game he knows nothing about. That is all. Good night.
What the hell's going on with this thread??

I saw "washed up old grandpa" in the subject line and expected this thread to be a lot of congratulations for sixth-year often-injured Xavier Johnson, who had a helluva game and saved our ass last night!

I bet Johnson already spent 2-3 hours at Cook Hall today. He looked pretty much fully recovered last night. Go IU!

Curious what you see scripted? All coaches have a substitution plan to start the game.

It appears that two threads down, there's a thread that's exactly what you're looking for.

And yeah, happy for X. Happy for CJ Gunn, happy for four total turnovers, happy with forcing five turnovers on Battle alone.

I have lived in central indiana my entire life. My son is 10, is he not allowed to be a fan of any team until he goes to college? I have been two 12 ND football games and about 15 IU basketball games. 🤷🏼‍♂️

For what reason? Because Knight used to do it? Not many do that anymore .. and fwiw - there's not a single bench player we have that has earned replacing a starter because of one half of play.

Also, and most importantly, finishing > starting.

There's no full proof method that guarantees success, it isn't what you do, it's how you do it that counts. He makes correct moves he makes mistakes.. and people don't understand every move has a counter move and the other team is actually allowed to try and stop it and often do. Nothing is failproof.

Example about him being a coach and not a puppet master; late 1st with fouls to give, he puts Mack in and tells him to foul. Well, he fouled about 5 secs too early. That compounds with Trey picking up a 2nd and then compounds with an early 2nd half 3rd. Blunder..

2nd example; he keeps Mack in late game, has CJ ready but tells him to sit, Mack receives inbound pass as he's our best FT shooter, Mack holds the ball too long against the trap and travels. Blunder ..

If we would have lost both those moves would be pointed out as bad coaching, when they were player mistakes.

I absolutely hate the scripted first half rotations, especially early in the year but he goes to more common rotations and his best options in the 2nd and has shortened lineups as the season goes.. There was nothing different last night except IU won.

As I recall, Gene Keady was one of those coaches that always seemed to look at the clock and say, "Wow! That was the under 8:00 TV timeout and I haven't made any substitutions yet. You three get in there now!"

Maybe coaches like that are concerned about player fatigue, but when they do it game after game I have trouble believing the players are getting tired at the same point in every single game.

So what is Woodson's thinking with his group substitutions ? It can't always be matchups because the player mix on every opposing team is different and he still does it. Is it too complicated for us fans to understand it?

The rotations in the first half ... that I hate it matters very little .. I'm not the coach and everyone has a different strategy ..

I suspect he wants to give players minutes to see where their heads are and rewards them with time in the 2nd if they're straight. CJ was straight, so he got more time including playing end game, Mack wasn't .. he mostly sat. Walker wasn't .. he sat.

He has addressed it in interviews, it is for resting the starters mainly.

Gotcha. I actually think he's got a pretty good handle on match-ups and momentum, even though it often makes our fans nervous.

Many of our fans think RMK Basketball is the only way to play. When you win 3 championships it makes sense but they have to realize the game has changed considerably and basketball is an amazing game because it can be played successfully with different, sometimes drastically different, strategies ..

Actually, it would appear that late in the second half, CMW saw something different than you did. Anthony Walker got beat two possessions in a row and he went out, replaced by Ware. Those baseline drives didn't happen again.
How many minutes did Ware play the last 10 minutes?

Undoubtedly a frontrunner thing. If they’ve not attended IU that’s not as bad, though those like smitty should stop the constant negativity because they have no skin in the game at all. They should STFU - especially with the “they are embarrassing” bull crap. They have no connections at all so they couldn’t possibly be embarrassed.

In the Knight era the IU "fan base" was even larger. There were tens of thousands of what I always called "Knight-o-philes" who were not grads, most had never set foot on campus, never donated a dime, but they were Bobby by god Knight fans.

They got a $10 IU tee shirt from Walmart for Christmas and wore it constantly. Some that got tickets for christmas for the games students weren't there were easy to spot. Throwing their arms in the air protesting calls...just like Bobby.

Most disappeared when Knight was fired, some slithered in to this hate group called "Hooploopers" or similar posting hateful things about Mike Davis and Myles Brand.

So our fanbase is a bit smaller but better these days. They were never IU fans.

I wouldn’t agree it’s better. Not at all.

Really dude. Let’s have a beer and discuss me STFU.

They should watch high school ball where it still works. There's no true motion anymore, not the RMK type, not even the Carolina type..

Everyone runs set plays.... this fanbase learned basketball from RMK. He always did a good job explaining his philosophies and going into detail about what he wanted. I really wish more coaches would do that.

That doesn't mean and has never meant his way was the only way. It's not ...

Indiana fans just want one that works and wins. If iu was winning consistently or had been winning since RMK, I don’t think you would hear the motion brought up.

They are dumb. They hardly look off ball or understand math. I love the “stands around in the corner stuff”.
Idk if they are dumb. Just new concepts do look bad if not executed well. Our teams fundamentals are so bad that it does make it look like the offense has no system. TJD was so good because of how well he passed out of the post to those guys standing in the corner lol

There were also plenty who thought there should be a program for players who want to play for Knight. IU chose to step down from being that program. It took a while to get used to what our alma mater's b-ball program became. Now I'm happy to support efforts to pick up the pieces.

You're getting attacked because of your posting style. We get it you want to win, so do we. What the issue is isn't about wanting to win or anything like that... it's the posting.

Though you're not near as bad as some.. there needs to be some substance to the post or the board just turns into a vast sea of dumb.

Criticizing the coach or players, especially when valid is fine. But, it needs some validation. Saying you hate the rotations is fine. Talking about basketball is fine.. but that's not what some of you do.

Some of you come off as angry and make knee jerk outlandish claims with very little actual proof but present it as finite fact ... All that is is attention whoring.

Just because you're willing to incessantly complain doesn't mean it makes you a better or more concerned fan .. nor does it make you knowledgeable or interesting. .. it just makes you incessantly annoying.

Also not every f**king loss equals an assessment of the program, the failures of the last 30 years, or the need of a new coach... Sometimes it can just carry the weight of a single loss ..

Yeah sure. They don’t know. So bad they got second in the B1G with critical injuries. Those same doofuses thought we were better without him. Flip flopping fish. They just know two things. I’m win is good…lose fire coach.
