So, I started a new job last week. I had been a traditional in office working stiff most of my career. Post Covid, I was hybrid, but 3 days in office per week.

Now, I’m totally remote working with people from all over the globe. My question, what are some tips you can offer to: stay connected, not go crazy, get in more steps each day, etc? I know it will be an adjustment, but I want to get into some solid routines, especially before the weather goes to shiite.

Ooof. Be intentional about getting up and moving around. Take a short walk at lunch.

I don't know what you do Cortez, but if I don't need to be in front of a screen as part of a meeting, I enjoy walking and talking (or hopefully, just listening)
 
I get back from the gym, shower, comb my hair, and dress about like I’d do at an office. It just feels too unprofessional otherwise. Please note that I’m old.
When I moved to where I currently live, I kept my old job for about a year and a half and worked totally remote. I found that dressing like I did when I was going into the office helped keep me focused on in the right 'work' mindset. I also made an effort to go walk around campus/uptown on nice days for lunches and as JDB mentioned, if it was just a telephone call, I'd do it on the move.

I traveled a lot for that job and the expectation was that I'd spend at least a few days in the home office per quarter, so the travel broke up the feeling of not being connected, but ended up being too much.

Post COVID I'm definitely hybrid and both in-office and at home dress has relaxed a bit.

Put a porn filter on your computer.

Shower every day and dress like you’re going to be seen by someone.

Wear pants.

Walk a lot. Take calls while walking.

Post more on the Cooler or audit a CoH Uni class to keep your mind sharp.
 
I hated remote work. Been back in the office at least four days a week since June 2020

First thing you do is have the following photograph cropped just below the top jacket button and photoshop it over a background with several degrees, autographed photos of other famous people with intimate personal messages made to you, and various awards on the wall.

Have the finished product blown up to full poster size and situate that in front of a webcam that you've relocated away from your workspace via 10-20 foot USB cable. This way you can do and wear and do whatever you want, whenever you want. There will be questions, but just let them know the Zoom video portion isn't working right (play that up for sympathy and an icebreaker), so you just used your pic from your last job on your LinkedIn page (make sure to upgrade that pic on LinkedIn with this same photo in advance). They may ask "has anyone ever told you that you look like Matthew McConaughey?" and you just tell them you get that alot. If it's a hot gal, play that up too. You may be able to parlay that into some hawt pic swaps later (not like there aren't 100's of titillating McConaughey pics out there amirite?),

Oh, you have control of your calendar? Must be nice.

I keed. sort of. 14 meetings today with several scheduled over each other.

Luckily, @BradStevens , all on Teams. Actually, Teams sucks too but it's better than Zoom.
"Ok, let's start the meeting now. Lars, Lars are you there?"

"I'm here."

"Lars, we can't see you. Could you maybe come closer to the camera."

"OK."

"Lars, are there any lights on there? Why are you sitting in the dark?"

"Let me see if I can find the light switch. Hold on."

[minutes go by]

"Lars, you there?"

"Yeah, sorry, I gotta go. Wife wants to get ice cream. See you tomorrow."

[screen goes black]

I did it for 10+ years, well before Covid. IT work, which meant I was on call 24X7X365

Every day I got up and showered and dressed in regular clothes - not sweats - but basically acted as if I was going to the office.

I also scheduled times during the day on my online calendar when I wouldn't be bothered and had some time to take breaks.

I also went out for lunch every day, just to get out of the house. I got to know the local Subway staff pretty well.

I never felt guilty about doing things like going to get my oil changed during the day because I knew I'd be working in the evenings.

The only thing I didn't care for was getting calls from India at 3 or 4 AM, but that's the IT part of it. Not all jobs have that.

I really liked working remotely and I feel I thrived in that environment, but you have to stay focused on work and not distractions around the house or turn the TV on.....
 
My brother-in-Christ, I turn down meeting invites all the time.
I represent a single point of failure which leads to the shitshow I inhabit. I do this willingly and am golden handcuffed at this point. I do need to get some help below me. I recnetly took over a division. My old division (which I still have) works reasonably autonomously otherwise it would be 20 meetings a day.

In no world is Teams (free) better than Zoom (paid). It's Microsoft's shitty copycat version.
We have the paid version with all the bells and whistles. **** Zoom.
 
My youngest son is wanting to change jobs and did a video interview. He said, "Dad, I wore shorts". I told him that we do zoom prayer meetings since covid. I almost always wear sweat pants. You kind of feel good that you are getting away with something. lol
But you're not. The Lord - your boss - knows. ;)

Block off 20 minutes on your calendar morning and afternoon to walk. Take some discs with you to the park to work on your disc golf form.

Take other breaks (like you would at work) by doing small things around the house - dishes, laundry, outside work, etc.

Listen to podcasts while doing that other work and staying within range of your computer if messaged, unless you have Teams or Slack on your phone.

Have your non-work laptop hooked up to a monitor to watch or listen to whatever.

Get an exercise bike and some weights because you can likely fit it another quick 30 minute workout a few times a week.

Visit this site to kill time while reports and processes run.

Love it save the two monitors. I have two monitors at work and can never find the mouse
