Email today: “Funding for Project [xxx] is hereby terminated… The premise of this award is incompatible with agency priorities…"

I am technologically ignorant beyond belief and don’t care to learn what isn’t important to me. I literally have no idea how to copy and paste on my phone and couldn’t care less to learn
You can usually press your finger and highlight what you want to copy and his the 'copy' button that appears, or do a cntrl-C.

Then go to this site and reply to a post and hit cntrl-V to paste it.

Be curious to see how many are US citizens.

The funding cut probably affects their stipend/salary? Pretty vague poll with unanswered questions

Sure. At best it’s some sort of an indicator, but in general not the direction we want to go as a nation. Our educational emphasis nationwide on science and engineering in the late 50s and early 60s rocketed us to the forefront of the world, among other things.

I remember working in pharma in the 90s and the company acquired rights to one of the early morning after pills.

There were organized protests by many antiabortion scientists (myself NOT included), protesting the decision...

because many scientists were religious, conservative, and right leaning back then. GOP politicians were pro science, back then. They had not yet declared all of science to be part of some liberal conspiracy of woke indoctrination.

encouraging

but under the DOGE axe soon

UF Cancer funding has already been slashed, for example, they had a mobile lab that went to poorer (gasp!) and less white (gasp!) areas, both rural and urban, to give mammograms (to women! gasp!) and to do other cancer screening, for free (gasp!)

as to your wife, congratulations on the wonderful news!
Is this the mobile lab you mentioned in alohas thread?

"The vehicle, funded by a $1.5-million grant from the UF Office of the President’s strategic funding initiative and matching funds from the Cancer Center,"

Good article…we hear a lot about Big Pharma. How much is positive? How much should be positive?

A Federal judge has issued a temporary restraining order restoring the antiviral pandemic preparedness grants for one month.

There's no guarantee of any continued funding, even an ability to spend what was already allocated to us that we saved through our frugality, but at least we can cover the salaries of all of the young PhD scientists that we are having to fire next month

Aren't all of them currently employed by universities across the country?

They are University employees but are on research fellowships, paid entirely from grants obtained by the lab head. When grant funds are insufficient, they must be terminated. Different Universities provide different amounts of "bridge funding" to get you through down times.

A Research Professor is a fairly stressful job with regard to securing funding. I submitted over 10 grant applications last year alone, to federal & state programs and to various private foundations. I'm hoping that a few of them "hit" and that antivirals grants are not canned even before they are reviewed, since half of those have something to do with studying and developing antiviral drugs (non-COVID viral diseases of pandemic concern). I have been fully funded for 15 years and this is the lowest point.

They're not tenured Professors?

My postdocs? No. Me, yes.

But even a tenured Research Professor must pay most of his or her salary from grants. 90%, though less at places where you can teach more, with a large undergraduate student body.

If a tenured Research Professor can't get funds and bridge funds of 6 mo. to a year from the University run out, he/she isn't fired but goes to part time status, with salary reduction. If funds stay at zero or near zero, indeed you are asked to leave. It happens.
