DeSantis stock goes up

Oh the new better woke way of saying Racsist, without saying Racist. How many illegals do you have staying with you? How many homeless American veterans have you taken in? Do you actually have skin in the game, or a message board megaphone?
I'm not an asshole to the less fortunate: it isn't that hard. I recognize that there is an immigration process and a process for seeking asylum, and I am fine with that: I never said otherwise.

I know. The question is still valid.
Then no, The answer (yes or no) doesn't matter, as long as it is an answer. The smugness BS of, "I've never said" (Or what ever it was) is a pure Pothole Pete answer, in 500 less words.

Didn’t say I did. You just seem to be really upset about some people who have money who vacation at MV.
I vacationed on MV several years ago. I thought the place was boring as hell. A few cutsie coffee shops, restaurants, and galleries go a long way. No wonder people who like it there demand conformity from others, the sameness is palpable.

Perhaps the cruelest aspect of this stunt that isn't getting enough notice is DeSantis sending the people to the vineyard during September. The season's over. Whether it's the Vineyard, Cape, Hamptons, or Nantucket these summer locales turn into absolute ghost towns after labor day with nothing to do. If you want to get the full character of the area, you need to drop these migrants off at the beginning of summer. Fall is for NYC, winter for Aspen or Jackson Hole or Palm Beach if you aren't a skier.

MV gets it. That's why they sent them elsewhere.

All I ask from migrants is that they make an effort to assimilate into the culture, and the Vineyard during the fall is a major cultural faux paus. However if these migrants were looking at houses i can't be mad at them, the fall is not a bad time to go if you are house hunting. But even then, I would advise them to rent first. I know too many people on the Vineyard and other summer destinations that lept into purchasing a summer house they are not entirely happy with.

Some people are Hampton's people, some the Vineyard, other's Nantucket. My point being these migrants won't know until they get taste of each and see what works for them.

I just hope they find a competent realtor.

Residents of the elite summer vacation spot Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts could be seen cheering as illegal immigrants were bussed off of their island to military housing on Cape Cod. This after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, in an effort to highlight the issue of border states and towns being overrun by border crossers, sent 50 illegal immigrants to Massachusetts. Residents begged for help.

"The year round community is very strong because you are kind of isolated here—whether it's the ferry or the bad weather, you're stuck here," Sean O'Sullivan, a volunteer with the Harbor Homes nonprofit said. "We're used to helping each other. We're used to dealing with people in need and we're super happy—like they enriched us, we're happy to help them on their journey."

Too funny they had them for like 24 hours max. Now back to yard signs and virutue signaling on facebook and twitter! Plus they now have photos ops they can post on facebook.

Every day. Biden and his FBI are oppressing Biden’s political foes.
They wouldn't be "oppressing" them if they weren't blatantly breaking every law imaginable. And I don't want to hear about Hillary. The FBI's investigation destroyed her presidential run and she committed no crime.

Who cares what the people of MV think or say, they basically speak out of one side of their mouth while living their actual lives out of the other side. From watching the news outlets this weekend the people there have zero clue how the other half lives nor do they care. I think it would be the same if the immigrants were shipped to affluent conservative areas it just wouldn't be so phony and more than likely they would be deemed "racist" as we seem to do that quite frequently these days.

The people of Martha's Vineyard had nothing to do with anything. They did reach out and lend a helping hand to DeSantis' political pawns. DeSantis' ridiculous administration didn't even notify anyone on Martha's Vineyard that they were coming. Still, they did all they could to help.

I'd rather have boatloads of people who believe in the American dream rather than the Trumpster lunatics who are still whining about an election in which they were completely blown out. They still have no policy platform except for crazy Q-Anon conspiracies. That's it. Sad.

If they catch this woman, things could get interesting. Someone had to have paid her, she didn't screw these folks over for free...

"LULAC is taking this action of offering a $5,000 reward to help stop the deliberate and possible illegal actions of deceiving people by enticement," LULAC National President Domingo Garcia said in a statement.

According to Garcia, many of the migrants who found themselves on Martha's Vineyard on Sept. 15 told him and other LULAC representatives who traveled to the island on Friday that the woman had enticed them with promises of free housing and three months of work if they took the flight. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has taken credit for the transfer."

You post nonsense from someone who doesn't even know that there are FIVE different towns that make up the ISLAND of Martha's Vineyard. Some are as small as 500 or so people, and the crap you quote pretends like it's all an enclave of "wealthy liberals", when in fact 2000 people on the island voted for Trump in 2020. No doubt it was the Trump voters cheering...DWS

You could actually read what locals were saying in communications with other locals, and how local charities banded together to help people in need. From the Cape Cod Times, not people trying to politically exploit the misfortunes of others...

EDITOR'S NOTE: With the movement of the migrant community on Sept. 16, 2022, to a military base on Cape Cod, inquiries about helping those community members can be directed to Housing Assistance Corporation at hac@capecod.org.
MARTHA'S VINEYARD — Island officials are asking for donations to local organizations to support the unexpected arrival of 50 migrants on Wednesday evening.

Vineyard-based organizations continue to provide direct support for the people the county is sheltering, according to a Thursday morning press release from the Dukes County Emergency Management Association.
"As we do with any shelter operation, we are focused on meeting the immediate needs of people we are sheltering and engaged in contingency planning if the situation changes," the association said. "We are grateful to the many local and neighboring community members who have reached out with offers of support."

As of 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, the association was still coordinating an off-island response, a spokesperson said. Anyone wanting to volunteer or donate resources is encouraged to email emd@dcsoma.org or call 508-684-8015 first so they can direct their aid where it is needed most.

The biggest divide on this board isn't political or ideological. It's the informed/ignorant split. One poster last week claimed the migrants arrived on Martha's Vineyard by bus. Another dim bulb argued that that they were subsequently bussed to Cape Cod. But these guys are suddenly experts on Martha's Vineyard, its demographics, etc. Who "educated" them? Tucker? Too funny.

Wow. But kudos for at least admitting these are your go-to sources.

This is hardly breaking news, but it might be for you and a few others here. Martha's Vineyard is an island. That means it's surrounded by water. There is no bridge connecting it to the mainland. It is not accessible by bus, car or any other vehicle that requires dry land. It can only be reached by ferry or plane.

But didn't your go to sources tell you that island would be underwater by now?

Wow! Just wow.

Yeah, there is a divide on this board, but it isn’t between informed and ignorant. The divide is between those who know how to think in relevant terms and those who don’t.

You clearly fall into the latter category.. I’m the one who said “bus”. If you think bus or plane is relevant to any important point you go to the remedial thinking class. The importance of the whole MV discussion has zero to do with bus or plane.

Carry on.

And I was being sarcastic...sort of. I didn't even know what InfoWars was until one of you brought up Alex Jones.

BTW, I‘ve been to MV, I know the lay of the land. But the lay of the land is not as relevant as the aloof smugness of the virtue-signaling residents. . One of the liberal females commented yesterday how much the community was “enriched” by the brief migrant presence. You can’t make this stuff up.

Boy for sucah an unpopular guy he sure raises alot of money! Maybe shooter flipped him a few hundred bucks.

FORBES: Florida’s Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis has raised over $218 million in his reelection campaign — an all-time gubernatorial fundraising record FL Governor Fundraising (R) Ron DeSantis: $218 million (D) Charlie Crist: $17 million https://forbes.com/sites/brianbushard/2022/09/16/desantis-breaks-fundraising-record-will-it-fund-a-2024-presidential-run/?sh=686a759f2a44
No one doubts DeSantis fundraising ability, but that translates more to popularity with rich donors than it does to popularity with FL voters...And most of it is for his Presidential aspirations...

Funny you see these contributions from Hedge Fund managers as a "positive", since I made note of the negative aspects of this story (didn't post anything here) at the time I saw it over the weekend...

The financial data comes from Open Secrets, and this was from comments they made last week when stories emerged about DeSantis raising more funds than any Governor in history...

“The DeSantis story is more about a politician who's using his state campaign to be a test site for a potential presidential run," Sarah Bryner, the director of research and strategy at OpenSecrets, told Yahoo Finance on Friday.

DeSantis has structured his fundraising in a new way, directing donors both to his campaign committee and his political action committee. The PAC has been successful, Bryner notes, because it has no contribution limits.

Plenty of wealthy donors have taken full advantage of that quirk in campaign finance laws.

A key donor is Citadel CEO Ken Griffin. The hedge funder has backed DeSantis for years, giving $5 million for his current campaign on top of contributing $5.75 million in 2018."

Now I found this bit of info "interesting"...

"Griffin declined to list DeSantis as his favorite candidate during a May appearance at the Milken Institute Global Conference. However, he conceded that DeSantis “has done a lot of things right” when it comes to preparing for 2024.

Griffin also said at that appearance that he didn’t appreciate the governor's recent campaign against the The Walt Disney Company (DIS) over his opposition to the state's anti-gay law. “It can be portrayed or feel or look like retaliation,” Griffin said."

If Griffin was upset over Disney/retaliation, I wonder how he is going to view the latest political stunt?

So were you under the mistaken assumption that this $$ to DeSantis was coming from "rank and file" Floridians?

The biggest contributor on record is Robert Bigelow. The owner of the Budget Suites hotel chain has written exactly one check so far this election cycle: $10 million to the DeSantis PAC. Bigelow has bestowed his fortune on a range of unlikely causes, from UFO-hunting to "consciousness studies" to inflatable space habitats, according to Forbes.

Another mega-donor is Richard Uihlein and his wife, who have chipped in $1.2 million. Uihlein, worth an estimated $3.9 billion, gave Trump money during the 2020 contest, according to Federal Election Commission data, but hasn't given to the former president since then. Still, he's backed an array of Trump-aligned candidates such as Herschel Walker in Georgia and Blake Masters in Arizona this year.

Plenty of other big names grace the DeSantis donor database. Notable financial figures include Charles B. Johnson of Franklin Resources ($594,919 since 2019); Home Depot co-founder Bernie Marcus ($500,000), hedge funder Paul Tudor Jones ($400,000), and more.

There's also articles about him meeting with some of the biggest Mormon investors in Utah, and travelling around speaking at events with the likes of Lake and Masters in AZ and Mastriano in PA has surely netted him huge donations from the ultra Right investor crowd...That crowd has deep pockets, witness the fact that somebody was willing to part with $10 Million of seed money to sponsor a blithering idiot like Charlie Kirk and his bizarre cult at Turning Point USA. No offense to Lucy, but Charlie makes her look like a Mensa scholar...

And I was being sarcastic...sort of. I didn't even know what InfoWars was until one of you brought up Alex Jones.
You unapologetically post tweets from Posobiec. Do you believe that "the Dems" operated a child trafficking ring in the basement of a pizza parlor in DC?

I was just there in Cape Cod this summer. The people are great. You have no idea what you're talking about.
I have never been and have no desire to go. I do know several that have and they described the majority as phony as hell. This is all a matter of opinion and yours is no more important than mine. I believe the elite left believe if they say it they are ok, kind of like confession if you confess it all goes away. lol

When you know that you can eliminate the issue within 24 hours it is all good and you can look like a saint to eyes of many. It probably wasn't the best thing DeSantis could do, but it definitely took a set to do it. I like his f u mentality to it all.

Well you should check it out. The people are VERY nice in that part of MA. Believe me, it's not the way you're describing it at all.

I don't think the crowd is any more aloof than people at the ski resorts in Colorado. Now, if you want to see aloof you need to visit The Hamptons in summer.

I guess the important distinction here is whether you are referring to the year-round residents or the people who "summer" there. I suspect I would agree with your position on the latter, but not the former.

Agreed. Aloofness certainly is not only found on MV. When I was there I asked a local on the cape about visiting Nantucket. He said it was like MV only worse. Ugh!

I have visited Boston twice, both times spending time in town. Downtown Boston was easily the whitest big US city I have visited. Thought that was strange given it’s deep blue color.

Technically that isn't white.. It's more of an eggshell, that's why.

I didn't find Cape Cod the least bit snobby. I have a friend from IU who belongs to a yacht club (even though his boat is no yacht), and I was preparing my self for the worst...but it was just the opposite. It was so laid back and friendly. Kinda reminded me of a small country club in Indiana I belonged to growing up. There were homes from the 1600s. So much history.

You don’t really understand the difference between the people who live there and the people who vacation there. It’s been explained multiple times in this thread.
