Defensive coaches thrown under the bus?

In listening to wilson's press conference, he sure sounded exceedingly critical of his defensive coaches. He sounded as if he abdicates total reponsibility of the defense to Knorr. Saying he is "really not involved". While I believe our talent is limited, we really need to scheme better and he needs to be more involved in the total product.

Look at northwestern. I find it hard to believe they have far better talent than IU. They have better coaching. Plain and simple.

Yeah we shoulda OUTCOACHED 'em! That simple!

He included himself in the blame, as he should.

He laid it at their feet while admitting that he doesn't really know defense. Amazingly candid but concerning that a head coach would admit such a fundamental shortcoming.

I hope Wilson rips them a new one. To admit that this is not his area of expertise is not concerning in the least.
These guys are paid well to be the subject matter experts.

I did like that he said that the defensive coaches need go at preparation "unscripted" because that is exactly what they are going to face in the game.

Never heard coach W ever try to avoid responsibility. Knorr was hired to run defense and paid a lot to do it. Why have him at all if the HC has to do his job for him. Knorr coukd be okay but I'm not sold, not even close. But I'd like to be...
PS..for those that get confused...lol...without a specific quote marked, I am referring to all the posts, not just one. Makes you wonder how Peegs ever got along without it! Dws
Or how we ever got along without you. But I suspect you have been here all along under several different names

Peegs was able to get along without using quotes by being on thread view. We used to reply directly to the poster, now it isn't at all obvious without using the quotes..not Dws

Concerning talent, IU has some of the BEST talent on the offense side of the ball, I don't understand why our defensive talent isn't better than it is. Guys being out of position missing coverage's, unable to put pressure on the QB, I keep hearing we are getting better talent than we've ever had, when does it show up, do we understand what a good/potential defensive player is? Is it our ability to recognize talent we need. Obviously we do this on the other side of the ball, have for years.

Defensive coaches did not get thrown under the bus…..the bus ran right over them all on its own. (Unless you want to say the players threw them under the bus, by their play.)

1. Move athletes to defense

2. AD's have nothing to do with talent - with 2 exceptions: recruiting budget and forcing disciplinary action when/where a coach won't.

3. AD's do facilities, and Glass has been good there.

4. Fundamentals - technique for getting off blocks, tackling, proper pursuit - are far more important than scheme when you're playing young.

5. One cannot draw season conclusions from Saturday.

6. Yes, removing 3 starters and 2 others in the rotation on defense can have a huge impact. But its not "one play" stuff. Its over the course of a game. Depth MATTERS. Its why SIU went for 2.

In the first quarter, they break a BIG first play with a great blocking scheme. Crawford makes a GREAT pursuit and saves a TD. We bow up and stop the drive and Crawford tips the FG, they miss - fatal.

We score.

They make a drive and we force a FG.

Now they block our first punt of the year and went for 2 to steal the momentum.

A holding penalty puts us 2nd and long - and 1st Q ends at 11-7.

2nd Q - they are driving, a sophmore (Oliver) forces a fumble.
We flip it on them ans score. 14-11.

20 minutes in, we make a mistake, and the big TE hits a long one. 18-14.

And ... now we go 3 and out, no rest, and they drive to score.

We score.

They eat the clock and score at :01.

HALFTIME - 32-21
We rest.
We adjust.
We have the ball 1st in second half. We score.
Penalty forces a 3 and out.
We score.
Still-fresh defense forces a punt.
We score.
We just shut them out in the 3rd quarter.

So where are all the folks who usually complain about halftime adjustments? If adjustments are so huge - where's the love?

We rest a bit - and force a fumble (Oliver again).

We punt.
They hit the TE TD mistake again.

We drive and 3rd down drop by TE forces a FG by us.

We're up 41-38.
They've score once since halftime on a mistake TD.
We force a 3 and out.

Again, 3rd down incompletion and we punt.
They get 1 first down, then tie with a FG.

We score at :58.
They pass on every down, score ... and pass on the "go for 2".

Sooo ... in the second half, after adjustments, after giving up 400 yards and 32 points (21 in the 2nd) in the first half, we give up 250 and 0 points in the 3rd and 15 in the 4th.

IF we have Latham, Greene, Gooch, Scales and Dutra to rotate and/or take a majority of snaps, what does that change? Does it take away either of both LB-mistake TE TD (168 yards - 14 points)?

We played tired in the 2nd and 4th.
They played so tired their coach went for 2.

Sooo.... taking Saturday and using it to talk about new coaches next year?
Stop.
Don't make me come over there.

1 bad game that you WIN doesn't make a bad season.

Actually, Saturday will be our first game defense-wise.
Let's see if we do better before we off ourselves.
