commenting on the breakfast tacos and mispronouncing bodegas

Breakfast taco's, as they're eaten in Texas, are an American cuisine. Nowhere in Mexico or anywhere else will you find them.

Jill might as well have been speaking to a crowd of Asian Americans and said, "as flavorful as the orange Chicken at Panda Express"

Edited previous post. First, I haven’t seen anything quantifiable to support your claim. Second, there are a myriad of specific reasons that someone prefers there be a common language spoken. It causes many challenges in the workforce, makes general communication impossible, impedes integration or maybe more accurately promotes segregation, requires extra resources to duplicate any communication, etc, etc.
And.....first and foremost.....it increases the opportunity of on-going conflict between subsets of the community. See French v. English in Canada or the past 1000 years of European history. Liberals are all about conflict and division.

Liberal Dems just doing what they do best - working to keep black and brown people on the ideological plantation. When you call people breakfast tacos that's all you need to know about how they think of them.

Cherry on top of the Biden crap cake today: Inflation now at 9.1% annual rate, was already at 40 year high. Can't wait to hear the spin on this one. Will likely be something along the lines of it's everyone's fault but Joe's.

Extra: More videos of Hunter doing crack. Poll says overwhelming % of Dems do not want Joe to run again. PP giving 16 and 17 year olds gender altering hormones as all good child groomers support. Joe interrupts Mexican president to hit on camerawoman repeatedly. There are more but this is a good start.

Isn't Hunter up to $31M or so in $ received from entities associated with the Chinese government?

You can point out that a culinary invention came from a particular ethnic group or region, you can say it is delicious, what you cannot do is reduce people to their food contribution. "Those are the pasta people. Chicken and watermelon crowd over there. Burritos and tacos to that side. You curry folks can sit there. Boiled everything people at that table. Fried rice folks in that corner. And put the weird tasting cabbage and schnitzel folks right here.....ok, now that you are all set, I would like to thank you all for your wonderful contributions to our country. It allows me to get the best spaghetti, fried chicken, breakfast burrito, roast and potatoes, chicken curry, pork fried rice, and wienerschnitzel and sauerkraut all in one city block. What a country and thank you for making it so..."

I don't think Biden meant anything by it, but when conservative people hear all the time from liberal whites about how racist we are and we reply back that those same liberal whites have their own very large blind spot to their own prejudices and biases (I don't think it is racism, most of what gets labeled as racism isn't), this is the type of thing they mean.
Considering all the damage the Bidens have done to the country and the world this incident is pretty small potatoes. It's crazy to consider what gets people's attention.

Yeah, she flubbed a word and I think did one of those insensitive things that was unintentional. I think the only importance it has is it kind of encapsulates an issue Democrat's are starting to have with that diverse constituency.

"Raul helped build this organization with the understanding that the diversity of this community, as distinct as the bodegas of the Bronx, as beautiful as the blossoms of Miami and as unique as the breakfast tacos here in San Antonio, is your strength."

This is exactly what she said.

It's a stupid comment anyway. Wouldn't the "community" be "stronger" if it wasn't diverse? That is, if it spoke with only one voice? And if the community is really diverse it's more than one community anyway. It's all part of the meaningless crap the Dems spew all the time.

Then it should be easy to refute yet you do not try.

Why do far more conservatives want English as a national language than liberals? It was CO that mentioned education. So what is your answer?
It’s already our de facto national language. It’s important to speak English to succeed for the vast majority of the people in this country. Immigrants know this and it’s why nearly all immigrants try to learn English and why nearly all second generation immigrants speak English fluently. I have no problem at all with hearing other languages. Expecting or encouraging people to learn English is compassionate. We care that they increase their chances of social and economic success. Don’t liberals want the same?.

It’s incredible someone wrote that speech for her and thought it was a good idea. Imagine that feedback loop where no one understands how stupid and disrespectful that statement is. Especially, considering you pride yourself as the party of “diversity”.

She's a moron. Read about her Dissertation.

TexMex is different than Mexican, but the influences are obvious. The best tacos I ever had were from a hole in the wall restaurant in Mazatlan. I’ve been comparing every taco to them ever since and they don’t measure up.

That seems reasonable. It also seems reasonable to accommodate non-English speakers whenever possible. Businesses do it all the time. It's why at Miami airport there are just as many intercom announcements in Spanish are there are in English.

It has become common, though, to insist that such accommodations NOT be made in the public sphere. Print ballots only in English, tax forms only in English, etc. Such policies seem to be driven by the right and come from a "speak American, we're in America" attitude.

I would prefer to be more accommodating. In our past, it seems we often were, and it's a more recent backlash.

After my parents passed away I was tasked with going through belongings and precious papers. One of my grandmothers was born in 1901. Her birth certificate, from Rush County Indiana and with their official seal, is written completely in German. Her marriage certificate from 1921, also from Rush County Indiana and with their official seal, is also written completely in German. Ditto the birth certificate for my Dad, born in 1923. Of course that all changed as anti-German sentiment grew. But it would surprise many people to think that entire counties in Indiana strove to be multilingual, 100 years ago.

It has happened since our founding that we didn't require English. Look up all the experiences with German, again, we had an entire Army Corps of nothing but German speakers. Yes, it is great if immigrants learn English. But I guess a good question might be, in Arizona, who is the immigrant?

To me there is a certain amount of responsibility to learn the as you put it de facto national language to a point of being functional on a daily basis. I was in Lowe's a few weeks ago and they ran an ad over their intercom for cashiers and then reran it entirely in Spanish. I was thinking if you couldn't have gotten the gist of the English version it probably isn't the right position for you. I regret for whatever reason my compulsory 1 semester of a foreign language freshman yr I took French. I remember almost none but would've ended up using Spanish. Not needing to learn all the proper stuff but just serviceable. I've been around a lot of Mexicans thru work and some work really hard to learn enough to get by. What is really fun is when they are around Amish. I know a little PA Dutch too.

If I see a taco truck anywhere, I wanna eat there. In my experience, those kind of places are where the best food is.

Drives my wife nuts. She wants a fancy table and a glass of wine.

I just bought (today) a second house in Arizona. They speak English, immigrant or not. ;)

Those German speakers in the Army Corps had children that all spoke English. Hell, most of those German speakers probably also spoke English to some extent.

You can get around in any China Town or other ethnic village in the US using English. Might have problems in some parts of Kentucky though . . .

As a recovering Austinite, I am familiar with TexMex.

TexMex is as much Anglo-Germanic as it is Mexican and the "Taco" itself is really only native to Mexico, not all "Latinx". If you tried to put bacon, sausage or eggs in a taco in Mexico, they would string you up leave you for the cartel. Methinks Dr. Jill wouldn't address the German American National Congress and talk about breakfast tacos.

All of this to say, that American food is awesome and unique even if TexMex is largely garbage.

My point is that we have never REQUIRED people to speak English, not even Kentuckians. It is best for them to learn it (and frankly it is good for the rest of us to learn other languages too). But historically, people have come in and done OK without learning much English.

It is almost like the historical difference between the French and British. The British allowed their conquests to keep their language, but if they were going to sell goods to your average Redcoat it was good for them to learn English. The French went into countries and outlawed the native language. The British method worked better.

I don't care if I pass two people in a grocery store speaking another language. I've had it in Minnesota where it was German (my Sgt. Schultz German lessons helped identify it). It was different as I was used to hearing Asian in Bloomington, and Spanish about everywhere. But it is no big deal. But there are people who get downright mad at it. Probably the same people who travel to France and demand everyone speak English.

Waiting a second to press 1 for Spanish is no big deal.

The white Democrat view of Hispanics is condescending and ignorant. Hispanics don’t represent diversity any more than the English do. The Spanish colonized the entire Southwest and most of the West Coast. They established thriving settlements while other Europeans struggled to survive on the East Coast. Almost all of what w,e see today as culture of the West is Spanish culture. One of the three Texas founding fathers is Spanish . I would like to see one of the Hispanics in Texas talk to Dr. Jil about the diversity she brings to the American West.

Funny, I was just having lunch with friends today and we were discussing the drought in the west (and historically low water levels). We all three were saying that right now we wouldn't want to move to those states, the risk seems high. On the board, we haven't talked about it much, but a longer-term solution needs found, and probably one that doesn't include more golf courses and surfing lagoons.

One thing it means is this one more way our public education system sucks.
Yes, there are developmental advantages to a multilingual education.

Spanish on TV in the 3rd grade falls way short.

A background in a 2nd language can help learning a third in HS.

Make Spanish compulsory in K-12 schools. And stop offering French, it is worthless!
I worked on a committee over 20 years ago to get Spanish into classrooms starting in first grade. So much easier to learn when young. We had lots of research, presented to board etc. Had tentative approval and then budget cuts. As always.

Prioritize then. Cut SEL and administrators to make room.

I think New Mexico is the best place for anything with green or red chili. Hatch, New Mexico, is Mecca for green chili. The best meal anywhere for me is a green chili burrito in Albuquerque where tortillas are made with lard or bacon fat.

Where, in Arizona?

Our daughter is going to grad school there in Flagstaff. We bought it for her to live in (with roommates) and for us to consider moving into it after I retire-retire. It's a three bedroom and she has to keep one open for our visits.

A little fun with the story?

It was likely because of you and your attitude.

I like Flagstaff. Lots of neat stuff to see close by; Grand Canyon, Monument Valley, Sedona. Hit a deer there in 2018 and had to rent a U-Haul and car-hauler to get home.

Can we still see that? LOL just a jab! Those damn deer, I see one and basically stop and watch. Never hit one but one actually go me , right behind cab and took out side of my truck bed but left tail light. I had antlers through a piece of furniture in back. I felt something , got out and looked by headlights and assumed I ran over a chunk of wood or something. Got home and in my outside light was WTF?? I didnt carry insurance for it by that time anyway so fixed it myself.
