You really should stop pretending you are an expert in stuff you know nothing about. The union cannot keep a poor teacher from being fired, if the principal is willing to do the paperwork. The union makes sure the rules are followed, teacher must be aware of deficiencies and is given required time to improve and a certain amount of observations. It’s not difficult.

Funny my mom was a teacher, relatives are teachers, friends were teachers and smart enough to get out , best friend is a college prof . Not an urban at risk school would be my guess. Occasionally we would get one for a year, then the next year they would be pulled because funding dried up.

They came from my friends’ posts and their experiences. And very doubtful your experience dwarfs mine, teaching 8 hours a day 5 days a week, and even more time with your colleagues. You get to know people pretty well in that environment and talk about everything under the sun, and certainly racial issues.

I’ve never said I’m the only person with black friends, but I somehow think explaining directly how someone of Color might feel about a certain situation might be relevant. Opportunity Clearinghouse in the hood teaching at-risk kids. United way in the hood with agencies that provided drug addiction services. Volunteered with three agencies in the hood servicing at risk kids and drug addicts. 95 percent of my coworkers were black. Countless board/volunteer positions with agencies providing direct service in the hood. 15 years in the drug court and on criminal dockets. 20 plus years spent in the hood in the most dangerous city in America. Oh and I taught classes in Ohio at the prisons.
But I am white. Impossible for me to understand anything. Only white liberals can sympathize and understand by osmosis via their black friends on Facebook.
I’m sure if I was teaching all the bogeyman stuff you think people are teaching you’d be free to switch your child. Your child would throw a fit though, because they loved me.

What did you teach and how long did you spend with them. I’m talking about having relationships where you talk to people daily about about their life and their experiences because you see them every day and develop a bond. So with your coworkers, you probably had some of that, if you chose to have those discussions. Many don’t. And perhaps with your students. My “ black friends on Facebook” are friends and many former students who often vent their feelings on subjects, particularly when something important has happened. I apologize for thinking anyone here would be interested in what some people of color say about incidents that effect them . Truly should know better.

Are you kidding me. I spent years helping them get a GED. Get internships. Get jobs. Driving them to the meth clinic. Shepherding them through five years of drug court. Prison. Yeah you get to know them and what they think.
Hell I had the only agency in history there to get kicked out. BASIC. Black Addiction Service Information Center. The ED carried all the agency's money in a briefcase. My first day there I asked him what the biggest issue is in their relationship with UW and the guy told me 400 years of oppression.

I had one that somehow through fate her husband went to HS with my dad at a school that no shit had 32 people 100+ miles away, in graduating class so what were the odds? She absolutely hated me after she found out from PT conference who I was, she used to put ice packs on the thermostat so her room was this damp 80 degrees and that's where I learned about yeast infections. It was gross by last class of the day.

I’m not going to claim convenient friends as you often do (and I’m not saying your convenient friends aren’t real), but because of my career and the states and countries I’ve lived in, it’s highly unlikely you’ve lived around, lived with, worked with, worked for, or had/have worked for you, a fraction of the minorities that I have. Look up anti-racism in schools, on the WaterCooler or Google. Check out the thread on FAIR highlighting Oak Park D97 specifics. If you don't think anti-racism is the same thing as CRT, please look that discussion up on the WC threads as well because it's been discussed ad naseum. Or read some books on the subject--I'd start with John McWhorter's new one, Woke Racism.

Nah. Honestly once you get in United Way's crosshairs you're roped in, and then you get to know the people at the member agencies and it kind of snowballs. You'd be surprised how many people are involved in that way. Without UW it would be a lot more difficult, and I would venture so many of the volunteers I've known through the years never would have done it. I know they have their flaws but they do a ton of good

I don't know much about unions in general, having never been a member of any, but I do know that the teachers' union in Indiana is nothing to be scared of anymore...and hasn't been for years. In Chicago, maybe, but the posters doing the most bitching are the ones who have said they would never even visit there, much less live there. And it's funny watching Trumpers having the vapors over teachers wanting a living wage, and some schools that have "Gasp" help in the form of aides (and no, most teachers do not) in their classrooms of 30+, but adore DJT, who hasn't done an honest day's work in his life.
