Beer Thread

Interesting on the oats, I could see that.

I'm actually doing a sessionable IPA (about 6%) today, where I'm putting in some oats. First time I've used them.

On Hanks advice, I'm going to bomb it out with a load of Citra and Mosaic, and just a bit of Columbus for some dankness.

I have not had Todd the Axe Man. Another one I hear about in the same discussion as ZD, is PsuedoSue.
Pseudo and ZD are very similar single-hopped APA's. Just as I don't think ZD is 3F's best beer (I like Permanent Funeral and Dreadnaught a LOT more), Sue isn't TG's best beer, either (I like Sosus better, and I've heard King Sue is da bomb).

Let me know if you want some Sue. They can it now (pint cans), so it's easy to ship.

Thanks for the advice. I have a couple of ZD recipes, so I'll go go with the one on home brew.

What are you brewing today?

I brewed a roughly 6.2% IPA/APA (depending upon your definition). Clean and simple grain bill, just 2 Row Pale, and a bit of Vienna malt. Also added a lb of oats to give it some body.

Loaded with a ton Mosaic and Citra, with a smaller amount of Columbus (a super dank hop). Almost all at end of boil/flameout/hopstand....so IBUs should be about 60.

I'll do a massive dry hop when it's done fermenting.

Also planned to do the Mosaic Promise clone today, but ran out of time, probably will do it tomorrow. This one is a Hank recommendation.

PF is my favorite beer that FFF does, and it's not even close.

I may have to hit you up for some Sue in the future. I'll be sending some stuff your way from Black Acre here in Indy. A super micro ( in midst of expansion), but I think they are the best in town. They have just started canning a couple of their flagship. Saucy Intruder, a really tasty Rye IPA, and Natural Liberty, a super citra hopped American Pale Lager.

Their tap room has even better stuff, but these two are great. Drinking a Saucy Intruder now.

I think the canned Sue is better than the bottled version, but that is definitely JMHO. Anyone needs any Sue, I have cans readily accessible at my local. Just let me know.

I would love to get my hands on some Sue. I split a can with 4 guys during Super Bowl so didn't get much. Email me.

Black Acre sounds awesome, especially the Natural Liberty. Send on what works for you.

The Sue that my local had was canned 1/29/16. I'll pick some up Monday and send it your way.

This is my beverage tonight. Nice sipper whilst grilling ribs, but it's sort of a "by-the-numbers-IPA," if that makes sense.

It's White & Black Rajah this evening. Every time I have White Rajah I wonder why it doesn't get more love...Black Rajah is good, but not on par with Black Top or Wookey Jack imo.

Tonight on the menu for the game I had Hopslam and Lunch from Maine Beer Company. Not as big of a fan of Lunch as some. But IU has beaten Iowa and Purdue in the two games I've had Hopslam in my glass.

White rajah is as good as it gets for the style.

People that understand craft beer will Agree.

Hmmm. I had Top Rope this week too. I liked it a lot. For a 6% IPA I thought it was really nice and hoppy, fruity, and well balanced. One of the better Tall Grass efforts in my opinion. Won't blow you away, I agree. But it's a really solid IPA.

I had lunch at Revolution today. Sampled Usethe Scwartz black lager, Civil Unrest IPA (about 7%, hopeed with Citra and a couple others), and Triple Fist IIPA. Had a fantastic Burger with poblano chilies too. Damn I love that brewery.

Also hit Westlakeview Liquors and had quite a haul of mostly Marz and Pipeworks, and had dinner at Publican with my beautiful wife. We had the charcuterie plate, fresh, live sea urchin, grilled octopus with potatoes and vinaigrette and smoked, grilled carrots. I had a Half Acre pale ale with blood oranges. Damn incredible meal. If you haven't eaten there I highly recommend it.

We walked around the city a ton today. Didn't do much else, but it was 65 and sunny with light wind. I can only hope Opening Day at Wrigley is as nice.

Just watched the game whilst drinking several Jinx Proof and a couple Yum Yums (bastages were out of Hopslam). Yup, imma little sloppy. Troy, 2 good games in a row. The worlds gonna end.
Does Binny's have Psuedo Sue?

Better half and I stopped in at Half Acre on Lincoln on Thursday, and I sampled the Dentside; it was good, but they had another pale on (can't remember the name, sorry), as well as Goneaway (my go to IPA right now) and Double Daisy Cutter.

I like Pipeworks, but if push comes to shove, I like Half Acre more.

Edit - the pale was called Tuna, and eet wass Gut!

Didn't hit Binny's but TG hasn't hit Illinois at all yet. Sounds like you did just fine anyway.

Yea, the local downtown always has good stuff on tap (usually even ZD) but after reading the BA on TG, I'd really like to try it. Strange that it's in Minny but not Chitown.

I won't fight you on HA vs Pipeworks. They're both great. I'll have to revisit Gone Away. Wasn't it called something else before? they'll have it at the Fox for the HA tap takeover this month. They will have Double Daisy Cutter too, which is great. I'll still give Revolution a slight nod over any other Chicago brewery. Marz is really up and coming though and doing great stuff.

Yeah, it was originally called Heyoka, then they changed the name to Senita. Heyoka was sacred to northern Plains Native Americans, and another brewery had a beer called Senita, I guess.

I love stopping in at Half Acre on Lincoln; never a bad time there.

I hate to beg @ovaltine, but can I get my hands on some of that Sue? I'd be happy to return something back to you! I know you already have other Chicago/NW Indiana guys willing to share but I'd like to get in this trade game!

Heard yesterday that King Sue was available for sale, I believe at the brewpub. I would jump through hoops to get some of that beverage....

I guess. Toppling Goliath does distribute into Wisconsin, but I don't think they are in Illinois.

I'm not kidding - King Sue is the best DIPA I've ever had.
Could be time for a Iowa Cubs road trip with a slight (well, more than that) diversion up to NE Iowa to TG.

The pale ale I had at the Publican was Dentside Pale Ale. I can't find much on it. It was just added to Beer Advocate and I can't even find it on HA's site. Regardless, it was a tasty beverage and I'm looking forward to having their stuff available in my neck of the nape. I've yet to have a bad beverage from HA.

When checking my haul from the weekend I did get a bomber each of HA's Chocolate Camaro and Baume Rye Stout. I'm looking forward to trying both of them.

Picked up a 4 pack of Pipeworks - Blood Of The Unicorn (American Red Ale) today. Anyone had it?
Yes. I picked up a 4 pack last fall. It's good. A little drier than I prefer but I'd buy it again. I picked up a couple 4 packs of Lizard King and a 4 pack of their hopped up stout. I don't remember the name. A couple other Pdubs bombers, and a couple bombers of Marz. Good haul this weekend, and I escaped West Lakeview Liquors for just under $150. Any time I get out for under $200 I'm showing serious restraint.

I know some on here didn't care for Lizard King but I liked it. I saw that they were supposed to release a Cinnamon Abduction but decided to Barrel-Age it first. That should be an interesting beverage when it is finally bottled.

Hoops hated LK. Phish and O loved it, probably more than me, though I like it plenty. I love Mosaic hops so it's up my alley. I seem to like them more when added to Citra or in some other combination like with Todd the Axeman and Fresh Squeezed. I'll never complain about any well made 6%ish pale ale using either variety of hop either.

I have found that I don't like Mosaic hops as much when standing alone (Founders S.M.A.S.H. Mosaic Promise comes to mind...) I also prefer them with Citra or some other combination. Freshly Squeezed is mighty tasty. But I will also try anything at least once even if I am skeptical due to what others have said. Not all palates are created equal, right?

I'm with you -- I like Mosaic better when it's combined with another hop(s). Make sure you try Great Lake's Chillwave when it arrives in April. It's one of the best beers I've had, and it has a lot of Mosaic with maybe some Nugget to go with it.

We're almost out of stout season: I have BA tres blueberry stout and Sunday morning stout to get through and I'll start looking at some more hoppy libations.

Interesting. I just did the Mosaic Promise clone, as Hank said how much he loved it.

I have heard the Citra/Mosaic combo is great, so I did a house IPA as well this weekend with that.

1st time using mosaic in anything, so wanted to do a SMASH to really get a taste for it.

Quite a few guys from our share group went up for the release. I'm picking up my 4 pack tomorrow.

Just saw this. As one of Mrs. hoosierdug' favorite T's says "Bloomington, a drinking town with a basketball problem". lol

Sadly, not a huge fan of those breweries.

Upland, their standard offerings are not up to their peers. Yes they were very early to market. Upland Wheat was probably the first micro craft brew I ever had, and thought it was great, compared to the swill back in our apartment keg in Btown.

And I actually really like Coastbusters, their Double IPA. I will buy that in shops from time to time.

But they miss more than they hit.

Quaff On...they make a great hoppy wheat. Very tasty.

Their other stuff ranges from forgettable, to drain pour. They are the only beer I've ever bought that I've dumped....their Crosshair Double IPA was non-drinkable for me. A sweet, muddy mess.

I was just in Nashville 2 weeks ago and did their entire flight. The wheat was only thing I remember.

Haven't been to BBC for years so can't comment. Had beers from Salt Creek Brewing, in Nashville. Would never bother again. I asked for a Bud Light after tasting those.

There are a lot of breweries, all over the place. That's great for beer drinkers. But there are a lot that make beer that's between blah and blaggggh. That's not good.

Agree on Upland. Went there after a football game this past season and nothing wowed me. Though I did enjoy Teddy Bear Kisses enough to bring a 4 pack home. Found out later I can get it at the local bottle shops so that's good. About the only Upland I'd buy again. I even won the chance to get some of their sours and picked up a cherry. I've definitely had better.
