Atlantic just released all the texts this a.m. and it is not good

Mission strike plans and details are ALWAYS classified, unless it's dummy information in a war college course. This is real world classified mission strike plan details. Compromise of that to the Houthis could have made them prepared for the strike and possibly shoot down a jet and move the high value human target. This was classified and Hegseth was undoubtedly reading it on SIPR (CENTCOM wouldn't be sending it any other way) and retyping it into Signal. That's the actions of an amateur or someone cavalier about protecting classified information. He was a Major. That's a junior officer, but EVERY officer knows about protecting classified information. At least I thought they all did.
Interesting technical vid on the F-18s vs the Houthis. Fortunately, they don't seem to have the systems to take one out. Glad they didn't have a better chance on this mission given the leak:

I am reading it. And I don't get the impression at all that it's merely in reference to non-sensitive information (ie, non government business). It clearly references sensitive information -- which implies government business.

It also says to assume that any communication -- be it on a personal or government device -- can be compromised.

My problem, from the moment I heard about this, is why a public messaging platform would be used for discussing sensitive information. And CISA's guidance here is recommending just that.
The CIA chief said Signal was installed on his computer the day he took office.

Trump was given the opportunity to show his true colors during a very tough time in this country's history, and he did. He shit the bed in a spectacular fashion. Leaders step up and inspire. Trump acted like a petulant, indecisive child, in full view of the world. He could have been a hero and united the country. He shrank away from the responsibility, because he had no business being in that position, and he also brought out the worst in everyone in his orbit.

We will have to agree to disagree on his post election behavior. It disrespected everything we should stand for and diminished our legacy and reputation as a country.
A lot of truth here, but the notion that Trump could unite the country is farfetched, in my mind.

The "Resistance" publicly proclaimed they would never be united by him, never stand by him, would fight him all the way because he's a "fascist," and they have lived up to that for the last 8 years. Trump might bring out the worst of everyone in his orbit, but that orbit includes his devout opponents, too.

Lurker, as much as I disdain Trump, "Orange Jesus" really isn't going to help real discussion. Just my take, your mileage may vary. Void where prohibited. Broadcast rights owned by this channel and Major League Baseball. Past performance does not indicate future success.
Fair enough. I’ll avoid the religious offense, respecting my father’s advice to respect people’s religious views. I’ll stick to the two monikers I created, Ego Man and Agent Orange. Ego Man is in my opinion a non-offensive parody of Trump’s Rocket Man for Kim Jung Un and Agent Orange relates to the toxic nature that Trump comfortably and freely cultivates.

Trump is far more denigrating with his various public appellations (Little Marco), so if anyone here is do offended they can’t apprehend my post, I don’t care. Trump shocks the world and the world shocks back.

Plus, though I post both seriously and humorously I am here primarily for my own enjoyment. You might note that my recent appearance here reflects the real me insofar as I am a friendly guy and I have done my best to treat all posters here accordingly.

In short, my caricatures are reserved for Ego Man.

I don’t see any important truth there.

I’ll explain by comparing Colorado Governor Polis with Michigan Governor Whitmer.

Whitmer was very critical of Trump and the criticism centered around Trump/Government not providing leadership and direction about COVID. The kinds of things Bulk talked about. Whitmer needed leadership. It was obvious by some of the hamfisted orders she issued.

Polis could not be more left wing and I disagree with about everything he says or does. Except for Covid. He was excellent in dealing with it. He took decisive actions. He even complimented the Trump administration and Trump invited Polis to the WH. Polis didn’t need leadership.

I prefer Polis’ approach to governing. There are needy people and people who aren’t needy. Needy people are more likely to complain about lack of leadership in others.

Initially, Waltz took responsibility. Trump as well. That was good. It went to shit when Hegseth questioned the reporter’s credibility. The discussion could have been over…they didn’t handle it well from there.

Nobody died…quit talking about it. It keeps the story alive.

Now go on and start talking about orange this and orange that.

This is a weird way of initially taking responsibility.

Without inbound azimuth and altitude information, knowledge of F-18s taking flight wouldn't help anyone much... Modern AntiAircraft Missile batteries are always in the Ready mode (to fire when an aircraft is detected and in range) and once the missile is in flight they track in a 360 degree, 50 feet+_ to Max-altitude contact envelope...

The Houtis don't have an Air Force so knowledge of the fact that there are inbound aircraft is a wash... They still don't have a inbound heading to specifically scan (or "volley fire" ) towards, or an accurate time on target given that the 1st strike package clearly took a circuitous (dog leg) route in order to add time to their arrival on target slightly staggered to match with the other elements of the overall Strike..., and possibly even be a radar decoy to attract attention from the other elements of the Strike...

However the Naval Aviators were able to do it the Results appear to have been a rather spectacular 10/10... It seems that they killed a key player, degraded the Houtis ability to detect inbound future strike packages and seriously degraded their AntiAircraft defenses...

If that is what a major screw up gets us I'll take it...

As long as the Comms Security (or lack thereof) error isn't repeated I'm good with retaining all the principles after they receive appropriate chastisement and are educated as to how to not repeat the error...

Also, as I mentioned in another thread on the same topic, Waltz is the actual party at fault and the addition of the reporter has supposedly been traced to a member of his staff : A. Wong (that's not a joke but leaves plenty of latitude for one [or more]😉😎

Hegseth had a reasonable expectation of secure comms emanating from Waltz's office and there's no way Hegseth could be expected to know all the initials associated with Waltz's staff..., and..., according to the current CIA Director..., the entire Cabinet had Signal preloaded on their phones for just such a discussion...

Now Hegseth clearly over stepped the security boundaries but I'm calling it a rookie mistake, much like the Waltzes "set to delete" timelines were... (whole other can of worms)...

. Hegseth is correct in saying that those bits of information he texted were neither "War Plans" or Attack Plans"... His offending portion of the chat was clearly just a thumbnail overview to bring the rest of the group up to speed. Any actual "Plan" would be so detailed that it would have taken a couple of days (or more) to disseminate it all on a "chat"...

This seems an appropriate spot to drop this bit of humor:

I know I see your problems.
1. You talk too much, and the less you have to say, the more you talk, thinking you can fool others into thinking you have much to say.
2. You don't think anyone notices.

They're ignorant or for some strange reason thought it was OK to discuss mission strike details on Signal. Hegseth introduced the information that absolutely isn't authorized on Signal and then Waltz introduced near real time intelligence. For all we know there was collective gasp when Hegseth started posting mission strike details and they thought, "I sure hope no one ever knows we ****ed up big time here."

I don't think there's a big mystery about Goldberg. The National Security Advisor probably has the number of every major journalist that covers national security stories in his contacts. Regardless of how he got there, it doesn't change the fact that what was discussed shouldn't have been discussed on Signal. Goldberg did the right thing with the information - protected it until after the strike was over which confirmed it.

Goldberg did the right thing? He was invited to group, accepted, and lurked for hours if not days. I've inadvertently been added to text chains, email groups, etc. and immediately replied, when added, that a mistake was made. Some were even sensitive.

Why didn't JG post: "Hey! Jeff G at The Atlantic. What's this group I've been added to? Seems odd I was added."

That's the right thing to do. But it seems to me he recognized what was going on and just went with it, prying into business he shouldn't be privy to.

Edit: Maybe my point was addresses in the 7 pages of replies and I missed it.

I should have preface my previous response by thanking for your well-intentioned post. You have always been one of the adults in the room, your posts thoughtful, sincere, insightful and articulate. Though I don’t know you in real life, I admire and respect you as a fellow human being. 😉 I appreciate your taking the time to admonish me.

He’s a reporter. He was gifted two stories. The first involved a military operation, the second a stunning national security breach. And he’s supposed to look the other way? DMML.

Why is it on JG to announce he was there?

Anybody could have clicked and saw who all was on the text chain and questioned who he was. If he wouldn't have answered, they could have kicked him off the chain.

JG did absolutely nothing wrong here.

Even if JG did do something wrong, you would still defend him!

I wonder how many people are on this group chat. Sounds like Pete and waltz need one of those five things emails
Turns out that the Signal App is all over Denver local government which is used instead of email. Violates open meetings and open records laws. Litigation has begun.

Obviously business will also use Signal to avoid email. Will thwart discovery in products, employment and other litigation.

Fun times for lawyers.

Need to set up a course at CO,H U on legal implications of a signal.

Bc you respect your country. Journalism isn’t intended to be gotcha moments. That’s why everyone hates journalists now. The journalist was in the wrong. He should have said hey someone inadvertently added me. Please remove me. And done it immediately.

Doesn’t reduce the negligence of Pete and waltz as they should be shitcanned. But trump should ban this journalist too. Zero integrity. Looking for gotcha moments. Here’s an idea. Just be decent and do the right thing

The whole signal thing is very inside baseball, no?

A **** up to be sure, but if Democrats want to pounce on a “scandal” they should wait until bodies start falling from wheel wells of C-17’s or something along those lines.

Not sure this moves the needle all that much among voters.

You've got to be fkn kidding. So just bury it and pretend it didn't happen?

Several years ago, I was at a training session where someone was extolling the virtue of using Microsoft or Google for hosting email instead of running our own email server. Of all things, they were a lawyer. Someone pointed out that those companies' deletion retention policies weren't long enough to meet regulatory needs. The guy said he was coming up to that feature. Basically, he said the number of times someone finds a deleted email that saves the day is unheard of. No one deletes the email that proves them right. It is far better to blame the corporate giant's retention policies than to trot out a deleted email that sinks the ship.

I don't want the government skirting FOIA laws. Flat out, they shouldn't and we should demand they do not. But it seems obvious that there are lawyers out there who take the extremely practical view.

I would argue the Trump administration doesn't respect our citizens and our intelligence because when presented with facts of what happened, all they did was lie and deflect, attacking the reporter instead of addressing the issue at hand.

They then called his bluff and he had the receipts to back it up.

The reporter did absolutely nothing wrong.

He's a reporter and he took advantage of being added to that chat, which he says he intially thought was a scam of some kind because it seemed absurd. He also protected the information that he had by not disclosing it before the strike. I think he responsibly balanced his job while at the same time knowing that releasing what he had before the strike would potentially be harmful to national security. He also called his contacts in the White House and National Security Agencies to let them know he was given this information in a Signal chat. I'm not going to blame him for Waltz' screw up. He shown a light on a big time mess that needs not happen again. Ever.

I scrolled through the paparazzis ethics. Silent as to national security. He may not have technically done anything wrong but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t wrong. He knew he wasn’t intended and could have been privy to sensitive info. He should have notified them. Immediately. It’s the right thing to do. Instead of always trying to get a gotcha. Gain an advantage. Whoops. Stupid Fing defendant mailed everything to our office instead of his lawyer. Hurry and make copies then we’ll notify opposing counsel.

The trump admin in this matter is a separate issue. They’re grossly negligent and only make matters worse not accepting same

But I hate the paparazzi too

Completely disagree. So again, you think its better for the country and national security this story just is never reported?

Wow.

I think there are other ways that it can be done but I would hope that notifying the admin would have resulted in the same protection implementations. The converse of your argument is that this guy notified the world of oversights thereby jeopardizing national security. Paparazzi put the world on notice

Yeah, you have way more trust in this administration then I do.
