Still plenty of "holy shit" moments even if we find ways to excuse this one. Trump hired Steve Bannon and Stephen Miller, dudes well known for their white nationalist leanings. Should we blame staff lackeys for not vetting enough? LOL. More realistic to think they were hired for that very reason.

That just seems like such a dumb approach. And trump of course has little common sense. Or narcissistic sense. But damn there are close to 90 million poc in the us. Not a winning strategy

ya, he's content to trade 2 soccer mom votes just to get 1 guy like my stepdad riled up enough to vote for him. have to believe he'd be a shoo in if he had ever learned to kick the ball straight.

back to my stepdad. he's sees foreign interference and invasions everywhere. he's lived in Des Peres for like 30 years, McMurt. DES PERES. :p

Now that is funny!! He might be on to something damnit. I saw an ad for gov here promising to keep our state borders safe 🤣🤣. Maybe I’m out of the loop!!

I have never seen the word Nazi as synonymous with Reich.
Don't be a rube. Any thinking person knows that the Third Reich is synonymous with the Nazi Movement, the so-called 1,000-year reign, one that would last "forever"

Sometimes "gaffes" happen?

How many gaffes must there be before negligence becomes intentional?

How many intentional word choices must there be before coincidence becomes intent?
As for Trump's comments about "poisioning the blood of our country" (disucssing immigration), and referring to immigrants as vermin

At a recent rally, former President Donald Trump used language in a speech that echoed Adolf Hitler, comparing his political opponents to "vermin."

Add Bribery to the list crimes that Biden is apparently exempt from. Is America guilty by association since he steals the money he uses for bribes from the folks who are working. The Democrat War machine needs to be made extinct.

Long enough to know that when you keep making faux gaffes over and over, it becomes an intent or reckless indifference.

I never said trump made that quote--I said it was republicated.

There was a poll that came out in 2022 along with a study that indicated that 20-25% of republican voters identified themselves as being white nationalists and supporters of proud boy type stuff. I can't find it but will dig it up. That would be a significant portion who would, more likely than sympathy with certain (but not all) elements of the nazi party from 1933-1938 or 1939
I just can't believe that many people are white nationalists. At least 16-20 million people?

Trump's incompetence is hard to fathom, I get it. But take his ridiculous litigation strategies and lawyer hiring practices: he's repeatedly done that, too. Evidence of an intent to lose his legal cases? Does he want to get slapped with huge verdicts? Is he intending to go to jail?

He shouldn't have called them vermin. Dehumanizing your opponents is wrong.

That said, the lack of self awareness in that NPR report is staggering.

I doubt majority would call themselves that. They aren't card carrying white nationalist. But if you surveyed people on their belief systems... Eh I don't know. Growing up in Indiana I've encountered a lot of people who would get offended if you called them a racist but then would turn around and tell their friends an N word joke. In my early 20s I bar tended at an old school white table cloth steak house. The shit the Wasps would say at the bar would turn your stomach. I was young and dumb. Needed the money. So I didn't have the balls to say much. I regret it to this day. I Did tell one particular asshole to eat shit once. That felt good.

Also making Old Fashioneds on a busy night sucks balls. Drink the whiskey straight you pussys. I also regret not say that a lot back in those days.

Old fashioneds are delicious, though.

I think there's a difference between a garden variety anti-black racist and a white nationalist. I completely buy that 20 million plus Americans have some sort of anti-black racist views.

I think there are a lot of white nationalists who don't realize they're white nationalists.

Anybody here ever woke up in the morning, salute the Reich or their first thought is…. Awww that freakin Reich!!!!
If not, this is static, pops and white noise of vinyl albums.
First world white problems.
Undigested wheat seeds in cow dung, is equally relevant to the needs of world hunger.

Maybe. Maybe not. But sure shouldn't be normalizing an accidentally on purpose nearly verbatim quote from Hitler's insane manifesto.

There are three great authors on the rise of Nazi Germany: (1) Richard Evans; (2) Ian Kershaw; and (3) William Schrier (who lived through it). Schrier's book (Rise and Fall of the Third Reich) is remarkable for what it is--an almost real time analysis of "how Germany went from point A to Point Z.

The National Socialist movement, which Hitler co-opted and took over, was small potatoes --until it wasn't. The first premise was "if we didn't have democratic and communists within Germany who betrayed us at the Treaty of Versaille, we would havve won world war I". Second premise was that the hyperinflation in was directly caused by WWI, the traitors and communists. Third Premise was blame the immigrants as well. The Jews, the communist infiltrators, the slavs, etc. Who was the target at first? The disenfranchised working class and rural farmers. It worked. The fear mongering, the easy reliance on false narratives that Germany had been betrayed by its own (and the Jews) in WWI. The lies were repeated so often that it spread and grew and people believed it because they needed a scapegoat. Schrier and Evans go into unbelievable detail on this--with Schrier giving first hand accounts of what people were thinking. These lies and scapegoats became so accepted that the National Socialist party grew substantially---getting 20% of parliment and growing. I've skipped a few steps, but for purposes of a message board, I had to. Then came the violence, the thousands of assaults on communists, socialists and immigrants by Hitler's original SS equivalent--the brown shirts.

Again, the growth kept coming, with speeches becoming more and more vitriolic and more of the make Germany great again. And yet people continued to buy in. Churchill, half of Europe, etc. You know who didn't? Leon Trotsky was the first and best writer on Hitler's rise to power--even before he became the Fuhrer. Sitting in exile while he wrote his polemics, Trotsky outlined everything for the world. Nobody listened. How do you catch a hacker? With another Hacker. If anyone would know about authoritarian regimes and oppressive government, it would be Trotsky. You can read these writings on the internet today. His point in most of these writings is the Charismatic Man can accomplish much. The violence, the lying, the abuses of power were all allowed --including a suspension of the Germany constitution.

It troubles me to no end to chalk up a guy's clear quoting of Hitler and Goebbels as just being a mistake or a gaffe. There's a game being played here, and I don't think we want to say "it is just Trump being Trump"--Schrier goes through this in his book.

Do I think Trump is going to kill immigrants, etc? of course not. Do I think he is dangerous? I do. It is a shame Nikki Haley wasn't elected--at least there would be a better choice than the two who are running now.

Good luck on your daughter's game Matt--let's see if she can score a goal for the Water Cooler Club :D:D

Make sure to include the questions themselves, not that anyone would intentionally mislead or anything.🙄

100%. Reich ain't neutral--only one country has ever referred itself as the "Reich" the Bizmark pre world war I (and through WWI). An overtly aggressive country was the root cause of WWI. The second of course needs no explainer--we know exactly what Reich means: 1933-1945 Germany.

If you are using that word at anytime in the 20th and 21st century, it means one thing. Why would an american use the term Reich--unless it was intentional. You wouldn't. The actual sentence said "“the creation of a unified Reich”. They doubled down the usage 3 times and actually stated “German industrial strength significantly increased after 1871, driven by the creation of a unified Reich.” That sentence of course is extremely coy and does not provide an end date--and for good reason inasmuch as Bizmark Reich failed miserably, and the Weimer republic was dog doo doo, with inflation running at over a million percent. There was no industry. No food either. Enter Hitler and his commerical works projects....

As for Trump's comments about "poisioning the blood of our country" (disucssing immigration), and referring to immigrants as vermin --these are two unmistakeable terms and phrases that you won't find anywhere other than Mein Kumph and Joseph Goebbels diary. Richard Evans and Ian Kershaw both have written magnificent books on this.

There is NO other reason to say these things unless you are making it known who you really are, then playing dumb about it....how many times would direct copying of nazi language must there before people realize this is a problem. These words and phrases are a clarion call (see what I did there @BradStevens :D) to incite.

The whataboutism in this thread is shocking.
!!OH NO!!!

!!HURTY WORDS! !

People are becoming numb to this filth. That’s why it’s important for reasonable people to remind others that this shit is truly fvcked up, and Trump can’t ever be anywhere near the Oval Office again.
I’d say it’s worse than becoming numb, they are chuckling with anticipation.

I don't get it. What is the Trump campaign intentionally inciting here? Is the notion that Trump actually thinks there are lot of Nazi votes to pick up out there? I've never met anyone personally that sympathized with the Nazi party.

Is the implication today's conservatives, populist MAGAs, etc. are secret Nazis and fascists? It seems too close to the playbook that Lukianoff broke down in the post in the chicken-and-egg thread:

Tactics in this “Just Kidding!” column of the Perfect Rhetorical Fortress include questions like:

  • Can the speaker be accused of being “phobic”? If you can be pegged as exhibiting any kind of “ism,” or having any kind of “phobia,” then your point of view doesn’t matter.
  • Are they guilty by association? If you can connect the speaker to someone considered morally “beyond the pale,” then you can accuse them of being guilty by association. It’s essentially the Great Untruth of Ad Hominem by proxy.
  • Did the speaker lose their cool? We dub this the “don’t get angry” barricade, in which someone hastens their own demise by voicing frustration.
  • Did the speaker violate a “thought terminating cliché”? If you can be accused of things like “dog-whistling,” “punching down,” “being on the wrong side of history,” or “parroting right-wing talking points,” no further engagement is required.
  • Can you emotionally blackmail someone? When it seems like you’re starting to lose the argument, you can always fall back on emotional outbursts and claims of harm to prevent more discussion.

In general, with Trump, I think it better to chalk up a particular stupid action to incompetence and laziness (here from his staff for not vetting the tweet they retweeted--Christ, this is really a thing, isn't it?) rather than to some evil intent. I'll repeat for the millionth time: Trump isn't Hitler, doesn't want to be Hitler, and his policies aren't fascist.
Zeke says you’re wrong. 😂

That percentage is bullcrap.

It'd be hilarious if this was 4 Chan generated content that was pushed out there.

Yes. I'm typing on my phone and autocorrect Schrier (a high school buddy I am still close with), and I don't have the energy to fix.
Looks like autocorrect may have affected some of your conclusions re Trump as well…

That percentage is bullcrap.
I would not be too sure that the actual percentage of non-progressives who support varied Christian Nationalists/White Nationalist principles was higher.
Many Alt-Right and Libertarians don't consider themselves Republicans. Many are developing parallel societies, education systems, food supplies, communications systems, energy sharing, etc.
They are preparing their self reliance.

I have never seen the word Nazi as synonymous with Reich. I think have more closely associated Reich with Germany.

I agree that people, including me, have used Germany, Reich, and Nazi to mean our WWII enemy. But when discussing the horrors of the Holocaust, most learned people will use Nazis, and not Germans or members of the Reich.
"I have never seen the word Nazi as synonymous with Reich. I think have more closely associated Reich with Germany."

When Shirer wrote Rise and Fall... do you think he was referring to Germans or Nazis?
