Friday Funnies

James is walking on a downtown street one day, and he happens to see his old high school friend, Harry, a little ways up ahead. "Harry, Harry, how are you?" he greets his old buddy after getting his attention.

"Not so good," says Harry.

"Why, what happened?" James queries.

"Well," Harry says, "I just went bankrupt and I've still got to feed my family. I don't know what I'm going to do."

"Could have been worse," James replies calmly. "Could have been worse."

A month or so later, James again encounters Harry, in a restaurant. "And how are things now?" he asks.

"Terrible!" says Harry. "Our house burned down last night."

"Could have been worse," says James, again with total aplomb, and goes about his business.
A month later, James runs into Harry a third time. "Well, how goes it?" he inquires.

"Oh!" says Harry. "Things just get worse and worse. It's one tragedy after another! Now my wife has left me!"

Harry nods his head and gives his usual optimistic-seeming little smile, accompanied by his usual words: "Could've been worse."

This time, Harry grabs James by the shoulders. "Wait a minute!" he says. "I'm not gonna let you off so easy this time. Three times in the past few months we've run into one another, and every time I've told you the latest disaster in my life. Every time you say the same thing: 'Could have been worse.' This time, for God's sake, Harry, I want you to tell me: how in Heaven's name could it have been any worse?"

James looks at Harry with the same little wisp of a smile. "Could have been worse," he says. "Could have happened to me."

Bizarre story of 70s-80s era Republicans: Homosexual cabal controlling Ronald Reagan?

The story (it's long):

My hunch would be that the rumors of Reagan's and Kemp's homosexuality were false. (Although I don't really care if they were, other than if it showed signs of extreme hypocrisy.) In fact, maybe the reason most of these things were not published at the time was because they were unsupported by then-journalistic standards. So why report it now? To show just how crazy some conspiracy theories can be at the highest level of politics? As a historical reminder of how bad it was for gay people not so long ago?

Some of these excerpts are really amazing, though:

"Over the course of the following week, McCloskey typed up everything he knew about the intrigues concerning the presumptive Republican presidential nominee — the 1967 “homosexual ring” scandal in Sacramento, the repeated sexual importuning of Bill Best by various Reagan aides, Bob Livingston’s dramatic escape from a dread homosexual hit squad — into a two-part, 13-page, 33-point confidential memorandum.

The crux of the document was encapsulated in point 32: “Bill [Best] expressed extreme concern about the danger of a former Hollywood actor in fact being the ‘Manchurian candidate’ and spoke at length on the nature of the Hollywood movie industry and the fact that an actor is in the hands and under the manipulation of studios, producers, directors, etc., and that he must carry out orders in order to survive. He felt that Reagan had been manipulated all of his life, and that he was essentially ‘in bondage’ to those around him.” Ronald Reagan as the ventriloquized pawn of shadowy and sinister forces — his “Kitchen Cabinet” of California millionaires, his wife Nancy, Nancy’s astrologers, the Mafia — has long been a motif in assessments of the 40th president, and what McCloskey’s contribution to the genre might have lacked in plausibility, it more than made up for with originality. Controlling Reagan in this scenario was a “network” of homosexuals who “shared an almost religious zeal against communism and [on] behalf of right-wing causes.”

"Best began calling him frantically to report that “homosexual people were very close to Reagan’s campaign leadership,” that they were “running” Reagan’s campaign, and that “the situation is absolutely out of control.” It was not until a boozy lunch with a man claiming to have been a “long time Reagan associate,” however, that Best found what he believed to be the “smoking gun” proving that Reagan was controlled by homosexuals. “Bill, you don’t understand the problem,” the man told Best. “I once engaged in a homosexual act with Reagan.”

As for Kemp, McCloskey had never known what to make of the rumors surrounding his colleague. “The big joke on Capitol Hill,” he told me in an interview at his home outside Sacramento in 2019, “was that the most dangerous position in pro football is to be Jack Kemp’s center.” After hearing from Best, McCloskey agreed that a Kemp nomination would revive the 1967 “Scandal in Sacramento,” possibly leading to revelations about the other homosexuals in Reagan’s orbit and thereby imperiling the GOP ticket."

Long ass singles

According to a report, the average length of a song is now significantly shorter. (Basically, Spotify is making songs shorter.)

The average length of a song on the Billboard Hot 100 has decreased by 20 seconds in the past five years. Songs now average 3 minutes and 30 seconds — and are steadily shrinking.

6% of hit songs also averaged 2 minutes and 30 seconds or shorter last year, and sub-3 minute songs are becoming increasingly common.

I wanted to go ol' skool and celebrate some of my fav long-ass singles --- and the passing of a generation of music that I doubt will ever be back again:

Australia

"What happened in Australia provides a concrete example of how a healthy democracy can confront powerful interests to introduce rational policies that clearly benefit the country. The Australian success story also reminds us what a dismal outlier the United States remains in terms of gun violence and political will even in the face of the most gruesome and abhorrent of all mass shootings: the killings of schoolchildren."

Rutgers doesn’t make the show

The NCAA baseball parings were just announced and Rutgers didn’t get in. No doubt there are a lot of parts to this, bid stealers, including Michigan, general northern teams difficulties & Rutgets had a weak non conference strength of schedule to name a few.

IMO the B1G lack of emphasis contributes to this instance for Rutgers and difficulties for league teams getting national traction in general. The B1G broke from the ACC, SEC, & PAC12 (I think w/o looking it up) in voting against a 3rd paid assistant. Baseball has a poor player to coach ratio and this 3rd assistant has been an issue for a longtime. I think there had been some consensus building to pushing the season back a couple weeks along with the MLB draft, which the northern teams need. I think that momentum has waned. The B1G 2021 COVID season approach had impacts inside the league and outside.

I feel bad for the Rutgers kids and their coach. They had a good season.

Even though I have had my booster, I still tested positive for Covid this morning.

I was planning to play nine holes tonight, but I don't want to expose others to my germs. My understanding is you normally only have to wait five days to get well. If that is the case, I probably will be able to play golf Sunday and Memorial Day.

Any suggestions? I'm now working from home the rest of the week so I don't expose people to it. My wife tested positive for it Monday evening.

This new generation has no concept how to interact

Am I becoming an old man? I’m still in my late 30’s.

Went on a hiking trip this last week. Absolutely epic. 40 miles in 48 hours and almost a mile of elevation gain. Anyway, just an observation. It’s normally common on a trail to acknowledge someone you pass. Eye contact, nod, hello, something. Everyone in the early or mid 20’s you can almost see the stress in their eyes when they see you coming. They either look down, or give that glassy stare into space. It’s weird! I’ve noticed how weird they act in meetings at work. They’re scared to death to interact and will absolutely never use the phone when a simple 5 minute conversation is better than trading 6 emails and wasting their and my time.

Old man rant over.
