Arrived in-country with Infantry MOS February 4th, 1969..dry season.

Assigned to 11ACR, got to field around Feb 15th.

On Feb 28th. Our Troop Commander was shot and killed while directing an attack on a bunker complex.
Thomas McAdams, 27, Liberty Texas.

On August 12, three more died after a convoy was ambushed.

The last five died in a huge battle including another Cav troop, ARVN infantry, tac air, organic gunship support...everything...

John Roche was a young 2Lt, who had been in country 43 days. Nugent was in country 26 days. Collins 51 days.

I knew them all. I still see their faces. Collins was shot through the throat and bled to death.
Roche was a Notre Dame graduate..

My mother called Raines mother after his death..

Many times now I will be in the middle of typing a post or response, and the page will “refresh” - making my new post disappear before I’m done. If I hit “refresh” it sometimes re-appears, but mostly I want to throw my device at something.

They will face Southern Mississippi while Tennessee will face Northern Kentucky. I guess things fell just right in the other conference tourneys for IU to sneak in there.

Rock island has turned out to be one of the great tourist attractions of Northwest Indiana. Written up and shown on media, thousands of followers on social media, this is truly an outstanding place. Rock Island has gained significant recognition without one dime of federal, state, or local funds. No government committees, no studies, no exercises in DEI, just old fashioned community effort.

One visitor to the island remarked: “must-see . . .healed my family and cured my depression."

Another noted “It is truly a masterpiece and even an emotional experience. I’ve never had such feelings of excitement. It is truly a breathtaking structure. With the Indiana Dunes being named a National Park in recent years, I believe it would only be fair to name Rock Island a state park for the time being with National Park in its near future.”

In these days of seemingly endless conflict, turmoil, and hate, a visit to Rock Island would certainly be a worthwhile calming experience.

Man, does that suck. Delayed for four hours, and then, bam, wrecked on the first lap. Talk about a shitty day.

continues to keep their honored tradition of keeping up with student grades.

My wife is from North Texas and they had lots of damage.

I just finished binge watching seasons 1 and 2 of Slow Horses. Great stuff.

But it made me wonder: a lot of (too many, in my opinion) modern day spy/espionage plots involve strife within agencies and agencies burning each other, leaving them out to dry, etc. Is this a real thing? Is there any documented proof this kind of thing happens within intelligence agencies? Or is it just a great plot device?

Are there other big myths within this genre that either work or need to die?

Why are people so attracted to spies and this genre? The agents in Slow Horses are hardly glamorous, yet still compelling and the life seems alluring. Is that a male psychology thing? Or is this just a sub-genre of mysteries, and feeds into our desire to solve puzzles?

Time to go rewatch Tinker Tailor Solider Spy and maybe start reading some spy novels.

RHP Julian Tonghini will be on the mound for IU with an ERA of 5.12 in 31.2 IP and a WHIP of 1.64 with an OBA of .264. IU has made some changes in the field with Colopy in LF in place of Taylor who will be the DH in this game. The batting order is Taylor (DH), Pyne and Mitchell at the top of the order with Cerny, Tibbitts and Mathison in the middle of the order, and Oliver, Stadler and Colopy at the bottom of the order. They iced Taylor's shoulder after he was pulled in the first game in the 8th inning.

RHP Drew Christo will be on the mound for the Huskers with an ERA of 4.91 in 51.1 IP and a WHIP of 1.17 with an OBA of .219.

1st inning:

T1st:

Taylor flied out to shallow center to open the game. Pyne singled on an infield hit with no one covering 1st.

Mitchell hit a liner to RF that the fielder couldn't control for an error and runners at 1st and 2nd with one out.

Cerny Kd looking for the 2nd out.

A WP moved the runners to 2nd and 3rd with Tibbitts up.

Tibbitts walked on a 3-1 count to load the bases with Mathison up.

Mathison Kd to retire the side and IU did the same in the earlier game when they had the bases loaded in the early innings. The only good thing about this inning is the Husker pitcher threw a lot of pitches.

B1st:

Tonghini got off to a good start by striking out the lead off hitter. Tonghini then hit a batter to put a runner on.

A WP moved the runner to 2nd. Tonghini then got a K looking for the 2nd out.

A high fly to center end the inning.

In an Ohio high school playoff game, a ball dropped in shallow center field and with the runner circling the bases, the outfielder saw that no one was at home plate after the catcher had moved out to 3B, so he chased the runner down and made a diving tag of the runner at home plate for the out.

I once thought I understood these things. I read textbooks and poems, watched movies. Even interviewed some WWII vets for history papers I wrote in college. Was taught by vets of WWII and Korea and even Vietnam.

But when I took maybe my 5th trip to Washington DC, walking around the National Mall, I suddenly realized that I was approaching the Vietnam Veterans Memorial … on Fathers Day. It stopped me in my tracks. I wasn’t sure I was prepared to do that. I wasn’t even sure if I should. Somehow I thought maybe that day and that place should be for families of the vets. But we went on, and I found I was absolutely NOT prepared for that day at that place. But I am glad I did it, because until you have WATCHED families and friends grieve in that way, showing every human emotion, from smiles to tears, to knee-driving grief, you do NOT understand that you will NEVER really understand … unless you lived it.

So those who did, thanks. With all respect, thanks. I hope it gets a little better for you every day.

The top of the lineup is Taylor. Pyne, and Mitchell with the middle of the order being Cerny, Tibbitts, and Mathison, and the bottom of order with Oliver, Brenczewski, and Stadler.

It will be LHP Will Walsh on the mound for the Huskers with an ERA of 5.62 in 49.2 IP with an OBA .315.

It's 61 and a mix of sun and clouds and the wind out of the SSE at 5 mph and gusting to 13 MPH.

Bothwell gave up a double to the leadoff hitter. A flyout moved the runner to 3rd with one out.

A foul pop up to Stadler got the 2nd out. Bothwell then got a K to retire the side with no damage done after the leadoff double.

B1st:

Taylor Kd to lead off. Pyne doubled with one out.

Mitchell doubled to give IU a 1-0 lead with one out.

Cerny popped up to 1B for two outs with Mitchell at 2nd.

A groundout by Tibbitts ended the inning.

Did we ever get an official answer as to why Curt Miller abruptly left as head basketball coach?

The closest I've ever come to rubbing elbows with the (semi) rich and famous was spending informal personal time with Morgan Spurlock. We were close friends with his older brother and got to meet Morgan and his first wife on a couple occasions a number of years ago, shortly after he hit it big with Super Size Me. Normal, regular guy, with no airs or pretense, at least when we were sitting around the dinner table at his mothers house. He parlayed that into a number of successful projects, including a series on CNN. Later on he hit some rocky times, getting caught up in the #MeToo movement (in which he freely owned his own poor conduct).

Morgan died of cancer yesterday. 53 years old. I have been surprised at how much press his death has received. All over TV, radio, online press, you name it. I first heard this morning on NPR. It was a top of the hour announcement on the PBS Newshour tonight.

If you never saw Super Size Me, find it and watch it. It's a great show.

I've been looking around for some hint as to who will be on the mound for both IU and Nebraska and there is nothing out there right now, and we may not know until tomorrow.
Nebraska had to play three games this week with Thursday off, while IU played two games with a day off between each game. Hopefully, we win tomorrow morning and don't need a second game that day. Bothwell back on the mound after four days rest? Who knows. Will the Huskers use Sears tomorrow after he pitched Wednesday for the Huskers and went 6.0 IP. Would you hold one of those pitchers or both for a game 2 if needed? It will be interesting how they approach it tomorrow.

The NCAA and its five power conferences have agreed to allow schools to directly pay players for the first time in the 100-plus-year history of college sports.

The NCAA and its leagues are moving forward with a multibillion-dollar agreement to settle three pending federal antitrust cases. The NCAA will pay more than $2.7 billion in damages over 10 years to past and current athletes, sources told ESPN. Sources said the parties also have agreed to a revenue-sharing plan allowing each school to share up to roughly $20 million per year with its athletes.

"The five autonomy conferences and the NCAA agreeing to settlement terms is an important step in the continuing reform of college sports that will provide benefits to student-athletes and provide clarity in college athletics across all divisions for years to come," NCAA president Charlie Baker and the five power conference commissioners said in a joint statement Thursday evening.

"This settlement is also a road map for college sports leaders and Congress to ensure this uniquely American institution can continue to provide unmatched opportunity for millions of students. All of Division I made today's progress possible, and we all have work to do to implement the terms of the agreement as the legal process continues. We look forward to working with our various student-athlete leadership groups to write the next chapter of college sports."

All Division I athletes dating back to 2016 are eligible to receive a share as part of the settlement class. In exchange, athletes cannot sue the NCAA for other potential antitrust violations and must drop their complaints in three open cases: House v. NCAA, Hubbard v. NCAA and Carter v. NCAA.
