It's almost on the level of Armenians and Azeris. I can only speak for my group of "liberal" Russian contacts. There is very bad blood between Ukranians and Russians. Look at the fights they have during euro soccer matches. I actually had a Ukranian roommate in a Russian university dorm in St. p. He did not like speaking Russian. And he was on a scholarship program for former FSU states.
It doesn't matter what you or I believe. It only matters what Russians in Russia believe. We are only seeing one sides propaganda. I don't know how average Russians feel today. No one on here does. It may not be as appears in our media.

This is a decade event minimum, no matter what. Putins gonna have to either withdraw or occupy after the Kyiv government gets caught, because the populace is gonna go guerilla, and the world sentiment against Russia is gonna be long lasting too.
The shorter the fight, the fewer civilian deaths, but the end of this set of invasion battles is just the start.

It is a damn tough sell to tell troops to die because Ukraine in 10 years MIGHT be in NATO and might be an existential threat. Ukraine today is certainly not existential.

But from the standpoint of the soldier, there is much more motivation for the Ukrainian soldiers who know that their families are in danger than the Russians who might believe some family is in danger. When it comes to a willingness to fight to the death, the former trump's the latter.
That said, I suspect much of what we are hearing is propaganda. The Snake Island soldiers probably ended up surrendering, there is no ghost, the Chechens were not wiped out. Still, overall, Ukrainian troops have more motivation. Russian troops have every reason to believe they will go home to their life as it was.
Oh, about Russian bravery at Stalingrad. Back in WW1 the French fought with incredible bravery. They took massive casualties. Few people remember the 1999 war between France and Italy, both countries surrendered to each other without a shot being fired.

Russians have not been successful, militarily, in the 20th century. They got humiliated by Finland and Japan and were in such dire straights in WWI they overthrew the Tzar.
Yes, they fought on their home soil against the Nazis - at the point of a gun. The political officers in each unit would kill them if they tried to quit or surrender.
