Would Indiana fans prefer Steve Alford over Archie?

I know there is a lot of upset Hoosier fans over how this year is turning out, would you want Steve Alford back or give Archie more time. Just curious, when Indiana Hired Archie I really felt he would do a good job here. He got a great Recruiting class and at the beginning of the season I would have put them easily in the tourney, Not that the season progressed and the team has not, is it Archies fault or the players just not playing for him. Would Steve be better for IU? Just askin.

This is a major rebuild. Ask me in year 5.

I'd let FPauegh coach before Alford. Hell I'd take gene keady over Alford.

I'd take Crean over Alford. So, hell no. No. No. No. No. N double O.

The only people that don’t think it’s Archies fault are. TMP, Huge, Scott And Drque although they could b the same person

If the Hoosiers could get Fred Hoiberg they would get the best recruits in the conference year in and year out. It looks like he’s entertaining coaching college again and the UCLA job has been mentioned. You don’t want Alford!

I’m going to go with neither.

Hoosiers can’t shoot threes or make free throws and has a co-captain that has not even shot a free throw. But at least they are playing defense. And that’s a start.

if Hoiberg is out there, works for me.

that said, i have no problem with Alford as others do, and think a college coach is more like an ingredient in a recipe thing, where not every coach works the same in every situation.

should have gone with Randy Wittman after MD, and after Sampson, not that MD ever got a fair shot due to being both black and not Bob Knight. (a really bad combo at the time).

that said, also agree you have to have shooters, regardless of who the coach is.

ot that MD ever got a fair shot due to being both black and not Bob Knight. (a really bad combo at the time).

I saw some of the racist letters sent to Mike and they were brutal; have absolutely no place within society.

Having said that, Mike brought on his own demise in Bloomington. He ended up alienating the HS coaches at a time they were wanting to embrace him. He blew off a state coaches association function right after the Final Four run of 2002 that pissed off a bunch of people.

The two things you listed were factors, but MD's inability to connect with basketball people in-state led to the end of his time at IU.

#12 was the right choice in 2000. Myles Brand put a stop to that in the eleventh hour

You seriously think it was because he was black? Are you retarded or just stupid?

Nope.

He did a good job with Iowa State. Is he the answer? I am not for certain. As far as Alford I am not sure he is the answer either, nor do I think he would absolutely be the worst hire.

Strong preference for Alford here. He is my favorite all time IU player and was a big part of the golden era of IU basketball. He understands what basketball means in Indiana and bridges the Chuck Taylor and Nike eras. I had hoped he would have been hired previously. At the very least IU basketball would be back under a kindred spirit to many of the posters here.

Championship banners in the rafters, Indiana not only produces top recruits yearly but so does Illinois, along with a passionate fan base. Players flock to the idea of being the home-state hero, staying close to home or playing with a school with rich tradition. Recruiting players to play for IU is relatively easy, top-tier selection of talent.

Let’s look at coaches that come to IU: Davis, Sampson, Crean, Miller — Common denomenator between all of these coaches is that they come from mid-majors and/or schools that are virtually undesirable to big name players. These guys come here and for the first time in their life they’re signing an elite 5-star prospect (maybe even 2) and hand-picking 4-stars out of the talent pool almost every year.

They go from managing a group of hard-working players who will likely never see the NBA and are relishing the opportunity to play college hoops. Fundamentals but no further potential. A small fan base who wants success but no chance of anyone coming after you with pitchforks. — To managing egos, drama, half-a$$ effort, raw talent and developing fundamentals, a large passionate fan base that breaths down your neck and demanding success with a magnifying glass on your every substitution and interview.

Crumble. Failure. These are all excellent coaches... In the environment they were in. In 3 years IU will decide that Archie falls in the same hole as the others. IU will find another shining star in a small program and the same madness will repeat.

What NEEDS to happen is IU picking up a coach from the NBA or another major conference that’s accustomed to coaching in a spotlight and dealing with high-profile players.

UK pulls Calipari from Memphis - Kansas got Bill Self from Illinois (both successful handling elite prospects, Calipari also with NBA experience) - UNC grabbed Roy from Kansas - this is the approach IU needs.

Looking back over the coaches who have been at IU since Knight. Not so sure Alford didnt recruit better then each of them. Sampson had some good players. But cheated to get them. Crean got Zeller and Blackmon. Both five star guys. Not.sure he landed anymore. Alford actually landed top talent at UCLA. Multiple five stars. And top fifty recruits. Just didnt do much with them. Alford would recruit at a high level at IU. In state kids i believe Alford would keep. His dad and himself have connections through out the state in the HS community. And obviously he can also recruit across the country and internationally. BS isant going to IU. Alford just seems like the best option if Archie fails.

I agree, I think Steve at IU is wholly different than him anywhere else. It's working for St Johns and Georgetown

I don't want Alford anywhere near this program after the mess he left at Iowa with the Pierre Pierce scandal. It isn't the fact that the incident occurred, but the fact that Alford and the iowa AD were engaged in an effort to intimidate the victim into not pursuing charges, and an effort to keep the case within the control of of the University without involvement of Iowa City police. Then he makes a stupid statement about Pierce also being a victim in this situation. gives him a second chance, and watches him screw up a second time.

In this day and age I fear that the act of hiring him will cause a number of Women's rights Groups to protest and turn it into a 3 ring circus. We have enough problems to deal with on the Court without bringing on this type of baggage and having to spend time, effort, and money to defend the hire, and to protect the brand and image. At the very least we know that Alford showed poor judgment off the Court in handling the situation, and I for one don't want him to have the opportunity to screw up our program.

Not to mention, he is an average at best coach.

Steve was good at New Mexico.

And he failed miserably at two Power 5 jobs.

Only an idiot would give him a 3rd chance at a P5 job. Even someone as inept as Glass managed to avoid that mistake.

He's also a awful human being, that's been hated (on a personal level) at every stop he's been to.

The IU program is already screwed up. I don't believe SA could screw it up any worse. My belief is that Archie can fix it. This off season is huge, as I believe that IU will be adding 5 new players.
