Why has no one questioned Chris Beard’s judgement in staying in a relationship with a woman who called the police on him for “no reason”? Why would you risk that as a high profile figure? Sure—some would say…”but he loves her”. Again, if she’s made it all up or even exaggerated, then why stay and chance further accusations? There’s something very codependent going on and is worth a deep dive. And how would the BOT view a HC cohabitating? Why haven’t they married?
Exagerated? Her last official word was that he said he was defending himself and she'd not disagree with that description. If he stays with her or not, that's up to him. Why haven't they married? Which 50's year is that question from? I hope that's never discussed by anyone involved with hiring from IU.

What could be different from the Ol' Miss investigation which concluded that the report was wrong?

IU should go to the website below if Joe Mannix is retired.

I put Stevens and Beard. After that, whatever. I don't think the Celts will want to pay Stevens for a FO job what IU or some other college or NBA team might offer him to coach. Maybe BS is OK with that but what if he wants to coach again? Seems like there could be a lot of solid openings.

McCasland looks as impressive as McCollum.

Would've liked to have gotten Byington from James Madison last year. Something tells me they turn out good ones. But unfortunately that ship sailed. I voted McCollum. But honestly don't watch enough hoops to have an opinion. Heart's not in it after the near decades long destruction of the Indiana Hoosier brand and mystique.

I think Dolson (and Whitten) has a solid chance to get it right, this time. Fingers crossed. I'd prefer not a retread such as Pearl, but he's pretty good as are some others. I'd take Mark Few, lol .

Just to be clear those 4 names thrown out are not 4 coaches necessarily interested in Indiana Basketball, it's 4 coaches that IU is supposedly reaching to first. So yes I agree I don't see a world where we land Pearl, Few, or Stevens, or even May for that matter, but most likely it looks like it's up to them to say no
I really dont understand the obsession with Stevens. He hasnt coached college ball in 10 years and moreover, the CBB has changed drastically. He is an EXECUTIVE with a storied NBA team and why would he even want to re-enter the college bball world. Doesnt need the money. Irrespective not sure is a proven winner in the new environment. We will regret passing on Beard IMO - he will be at a top program in near future.

odd takes: Mark Byington because you think JMU turns out good ones? And Pearl's been pretty good with the #1 ranked team in the land and having done well in a loaded SEC the last few years? I don't know beans about Byington, maybe he's great, but hasn't he really only had 1 great season? 650 win %. Seems OK, but no idea why he'd rise to the top of your list? Beard, May, McGaskill (sp?), McCollum and Wade all seem like better candidates to me.

I don't get the suspicions that Brad Stevens can't coach college basketball anymore b/c it's been 10 years. He did pretty Friggin' good when he was doing it. I haven't been on skis in 10 years but I guarantee after a few hours I'd be sliding really well again. Why would BS come to IU and coach?? He obviously had SOME level of interest 4 years ago. How much?? What's changed in 4 years?? He won a championship, climbed to the top of the mountain, his son is playing college ball now in Indiana. I don't think he will be the next coach but I think there is at least a little bit of evidence that it's possible, not to mention the Seth Davis comment. Mark Few, won't leave Gonzaga, maybe not but how many times was that said about Roy Williams. Maybe Mark comes to the realization that if he wants to win it ALL, he needs a clean, fresh slate. Is Billy Donovan happy in Chicago now that they are having a fire sale. I don't like Pearl even though he has the results to back it up. He has a bunch of baggage with him as well. I like Beard but the elephant in the room is probably just too much of an elephant, but if you count him out, then Pearl and Golden have to be counted out as well. May is a gamble IMO. I don't see Oats making a move, wouldn't even CONSIDER Kentucky and he has a huge buyout. No one talks about McDermont (sp?). I like Brownell. Clemson plays tough as nails with a bunch of 2 and 3 star players. The McCullom guy is intriquing as well as the coach from West Virginia.

You of course make Stevens say no. I don't see anyone suggesting otherwise. Just most people think he WILL say no. Again.

The one thing that might change my mind is if he did have a drinking problem and has stopped.

Still with her, and still drinking (assuming drinking played a role in the initial altercation)?

If I'm Scott Dolson, the drinking is what I would focus on. Alcohol abusers do shit they wouldn't do otherwise, and few learn to "behave themselves" without stopping drinking. (Look at Pete Hegseth.) If he's still drinking, no matter how little or how well controlled, I'm taking a pass.

JMU turning out good ones was just a fun nod toward Cig, obviously. I was impressed when Vandy hired Byington though, I'm a bit of a Vandy fan from living in Nashville 10 years, and I felt they might have hit on a really good one. We''ll see.

Pearl's up there in years. I said he's good, what's wrong with that? Do I want him, not really, I want a longer term guy. I wanted him 10 years ago or even 5-6.

Beards altercation with ex-girlfriend is something I would ask you to research a bit. Texas should've stood by him on that. There's no "show cause" on the hire. His staff is a perfect fit. I ask you look at the components of his staff. They'd hit the ground running in a way others couldn't. IU is a job that requires an Alpha male in the room. No one unproven, his buyout is 4.5 maybe 5.
Hire the greatest coach IU- get it done. Watch holier than thou ninnies get in line quickly when the wins start stacking up/ come on Dolson please have sense!’

I agree but believe Hegseth is an honorable man and I hope will keep his pledge not to drink. I don’t think party affiliation has anything to do with the view that good to stop the revolving door between the Pentagon and defense contractors. If there are indications he continues to drink then agree he should be removed from office because all indications are it has a big negative impact on his behavior.
Sounds like a lot of assumptions there. Who are the other schools that investigated him and passed on him? He took the Ol Miss job pretty quickly. The event was Dec 2022 and he took the Ol Miss job March 2023. You think he was approached by "other schools" before that? Who?

I've said steadily all along: investigate him and if he doesn't convince you he's remorseful and changed (ie. stopped drinking and broken up with the woman for instance), OR if an investigator turns up other incidents (he's divorced, if he's an abuser, most likely his ex or any other former GF will know) such as prior police calls for DV, restraining orders, DUIs, bar fights, lawsuits, etc... you pass.

I think we both can guess how she got those injuries, but it also does happen that people do fake injuries, like scratching themselves, or grabbing/reddening their neck if they know police are coming. So, I'm not precluding that either. My take is, I wasn't there, so I don't know the circumstances and I can look past that if it was a solitary event and he is remorseful and has made changes to insure it never happens again. Whatever happened to the principles of presumed innocence or giving someone a second chance? We just had 2 Presidents pardon thousands of criminals and one of them is a convicted felon and found guilty of sexual abuse. I think it would be negligent not to consider and investigate probably the very best candidate in terms of proven results, experience and age and dismiss him on the face of things.
Impossible to discuss reasonably when the facts are routinely misstated. The police report says there was one bite mark on her left arm. There were no bite marks on her face indicated in the report. With analogy to my daughters being attacked, I would hope defensive marks on the aggressor would include more than a bite mark on his arm and a scratch on his face. I.would hope the police report would include an apparent 9 mm hole between the eyes. To say the police report is inconsistent with self defense is just something made up.

McCollum in a heartbeat. The guy is a consistent winner. His teams are off the charts. 12 of 15 seasons as a head coach with single digit losses in the overall season..
Universally know for building strong cultures, develops players and has a sustained, winning system. No brainer.
They average 71 points. He wins a bunch of games but you aren’t winning in March scoring 71.

I think what Pearl has done at Auburn is a good bit better than "pretty good". Can you name Auburn's coach that Pearl replaced? Neither could I. That was a backwater program, probably drawing 6-7,000 fans a night, and he has them at #1, with around a 700 win percentage. Akin to taking over at MN and having them as a top 3 conference contender.

If it's even a problem. It certainly was for Hegseth and there were plenty of incidents to back it up. That's why I've said all along with Beard you hire an investigator. If he's abused alcohol or wives/girlfriends there will be a trail, and it won't take someone long at all to find it. Agree 100%, if he's had problems with alcohol (or DV) you pass unless he's stopped drinking.

To me, this boils down to A) Stevens B) Donovan C) Few D) Investigate the hell out of Beard or eliminate him from contention immediately. That also eliminates Wade, Pearl and Golden E) McDermott/Brownell/Cronin F) Up and coming youngster with promise like McCullom, DeVries, May.

If Beard has had alcohol issues, there will definitely be some bread crumbs. If the DV was a one-time thing b/c she busted his glasses off his head and nothing else smells funny then you hire him.

If nothing else, all the angst for Beard has shown me that DV, even lacking a conviction is different in people's mind than cheating or other crimes, so I'd say it doesn't eliminate all those other guys.

I think you said it perfectly at the end. If the DV was an isolated incident and you trust that he won’t burn you. Beard is the guy for the job.

Dude can win.

It is different, I'm not going to deny that. How different is debatable. I think what Golden did/accused of is just as severe and more than likely to be a habitual thing. What the other guys did falls under NCAA violations, not moral, but after the Sampson debacle, I think they shouldn't be considered. I don't think the Cronin/McDermott/Brownell possibilities aren't receiving the attention that they should be. Louisville's success has some pining for the "up and comer" but we tried that with Archie. Not saying it wouldn't work this time, but the guy at U of L might tank next year as well. This definitely isn't an exact science. I remember when the Dolphins hired Jimmy Johnson. I thought the Dolphins would surely win a SB within a few years. Didn't happen. There are no sure bets.
