Woodson to retire at seasons end. Top 2 choices assuming most select Brad Stevens although extremely unlikely it ever happens -

Stevens, Pearl, and Drew will never happen. I also doubt Dusty leaves after just one year at Michigan. Be interesting, though, to see if the students yell, “we want Dusty” on Saturday.

McCollum in a heartbeat. The guy is a consistent winner. His teams are off the charts. 12 of 15 seasons as a head coach with single digit losses in the overall season..
Universally know for building strong cultures, develops players and has a sustained, winning system. No brainer.
He'd definately could have Bo Ryan type success here with a more cleaner brand of ball.

Some are worried about his style of play, but maybe he just plays what’s best for the type of players he has. If he was hired and able to keep Tucker and a couple of the more athletic/potential guys on this years team, he could change “his” style a little and succeed. He always finds great shooters and hard workers.

I don’t think he’s won all of those games always having the “best” players

I like his style better than the “no style” we have now. Anybody raise their hand who favors 20 turnovers and losing by 20-30 points in games. Anyone?
No takers?

Hasn't completed a season in D1 yet.

Any assistant coaches you want to keep? Calbert is the only one I can tell has done anything to develop a player. Switched Ballo to his left hand free throw and Tucker came to IU because of him.

Beards altercation with ex-girlfriend is something I would ask you to research a bit. Texas should've stood by him on that. There's no "show cause" on the hire. His staff is a perfect fit. I ask you look at the components of his staff. They'd hit the ground running in a way others couldn't. IU is a job that requires an Alpha male in the room. No one unproven, his buyout is 4.5 maybe 5.

Coach K and Mark Few didn’t have much Division I head coaching experience before they took over “no name” basketball schools. You know the results. All about the coach and the players wanting to play for them. A coach doesn’t win over 400 games out of 500 and not have that

Well, we hired Woodson and he had never coached in Div 1, 2, 3 or 4.
And at the end of the day, Woodson didn’t even compete in Division 1. He showed up to games. Games that were above his intellectual level.

There are guys that can coach and they are everywhere. Coaching is coaching. If you are good at it, you can compete at this level. Seen a lot of guys coaching in this “magical D1” level and they suck.

Byington

For no other reason aside from the fact that the same (now retired) AD at James Madison who hired Cignetti there also identified Byington as a Winner... (and was proven correct [again]...).

He's solid and he can bring 3 or 4 guys with him to be the cornerstones for the foundation of what he'll be attempting the build...

Watch out!
The Me Too movement just put you on their hit list. But…..Randi is cool with Chris and she’s good with IU too. Works for me!

Now that is a damn coach.

I don’t understand though. All her online bios say she (Randi Trew, the fiancé in question) attended Texas Tech and then Wayland Baptist College and played volleyball at both. She attended IU also?

Style of play is the most inconsequential concern there is. I know people say they don't want a certain brand of bball, but you know what everyone wants: to win. IU fans will adapt to and support someone who wins, regardless of the style of play. Eventually, just as folks at WI and UVA did, that you hvae a winning "brand" of bball, it becomes something of a point of pride. Win, and we'll support you.

This thread is sorta disgusting.

I guess spending decades representing abusers and the abused gives me a different take.

He needs to have stopped drinking, period. And people here w their "anti Me Too" quips need to stop. It's embarrassing to an otherwise educated, civilized fanbase.

Bob kNight zealotry isn't enough, dudes. You want another 25 years of the curse? Keep that shit up.

I'd agree: still with the same woman and still drinking are two things that would make me believe he's not made enough changes to take what happened seriously and insuring it doesn't happen again. The first I could maybe understand, although still a red flag, but if drinking played a part, then you should eliminate that if you're serious about not having it happen again.

I'm mindful of the fact that there are dudes reading this who do in fact get physical w their wives and or women, and think "that's just the way it is in this world".

I've got 3 little daughters and I'm looking forward to protecting them from these men for the rest of my life.

I just can't tell you how prevalent abuse is, folks. And, yeah, maybe Beard's situation has some mitigating circumstances...clearly he didn't harm a child, put her in hospitals, maybe played some self Defense....whatever.

It's OUR approach to it that matters to me. And this "well he cites Bobby! and sure done coach ole miss good!" makes us look like yokels.

Maybe Beard has changed, or at least learned. But he needs to have to stopped drinking for me to support him...and I think Coach Knight would say the same, truthfully.
