Will NYC elect a socialist mayor?

I agree, Hoot. This is why I am for an extremely small federal government. If New Yorkers want to elect a socialist, they should be able to do it. However, I shouldn't suffer from their ignorance, which I won't. I might even benefit from it as capital flows out of New York.
SC, do we really know if a majority of New Yorkers want a socialist mayor? Heck, in the primary Mamdani only received 38% of the vote in spite of some rather hard to believe promises. Promises include...
  • Free bus service citywide
  • Rent freezes and stricter accountability for negligent landlords
  • A chain of city-owned grocery stores focused on affordability
  • Universal childcare for children aged six weeks to five years

Also given the complex governing system of New York with its five Burroughs and the obvious serious questions about financing all those promises, how in the world can Mamdani deliver?

He can’t without state assistance from what I’ve read.

That said, the universal childcare, if done right, could save the city money over the long term. I doubt it would be done right, though, which is always the rub.

Long term?

With elections always just around the corner and voters thinking about the here and now, our pols from both parties never seem to think long term.

He's gonna give free daycare to the Section 8'ers so they can stay home and watch the View.

Speaking of day care, my dream girl Ivanka Trump who was the real star of Celebrity Apprentice IMO, was determined to help families with day care during Trump's first term without any results.

Sad to say, Ivanka and her day care ideas are no longer in the spotlight

Not sure what he will be able to accomplish. Thankfully, I don't have to worry about it. I was responding to you saying New Yorkers should be able to vote in their leaders, which I agree with.

Then throw Trump's proposed freebies for having more kids into the mix, and you can quickly see where this goes.
Isn’t the Trump plan effectively $1000 in a fund that tracks the S&P and can’t be touched until the child is 18?

I love the idea.

More people in the market means less stupid Bernie Sanders acolytes that don’t understand how money works.

In Feb/March timeframe he floated a $5k tax credit per child that was available to everyone regardless of income and had a refundable component that was available even if a filer had no tax liability. I have no idea if it is still in the big bloated bill or not.

Saw that. Trump, as a New Yorker, needs to get this guy a gig ASAP and give Adams a punchers chance.

And Mr. Beret needs to put his pride aside and do what’s best for New York.

Wall St. is apparently shitting their pants.
I wonder what it would take, if possible, to get Wall St to move to FL or TX. Would be the end of NY and the biggest FAFO ever.

Id really like to see the bolded play out. People bitch about food prices and quality now. Just wait until quantity is the problem.

If their strategy is to somehow mandate lower wholesale prices from distributors, that’s likely to happen. If it’s something else, maybe not.

If I had to guess, I’d say that the major theme will be “Profit is the reason you pay so much…we don’t need a profit margin, so we’ll have lower prices because of that.”

In that case, tight supply probably won’t be their undoing. It’ll be operational.

Everyone knows, of course, that the profit margin on groceries is incredible.

City-run grocery stores, also known as municipally owned or public grocery stores, are a model where the local government owns and operates a grocery store, often with the aim of addressing food insecurity and high prices. These stores are designed to provide access to affordable, healthy food options in underserved areas, potentially lowering prices by eliminating rent and property taxes, and operating on a non-profit basis.

Here's a more detailed breakdown:
How they work:
Potential Benefits:
Potential Challenges:
  • Funding and Sustainability:
Operating a grocery store, even without profit, requires significant funding for infrastructure, staffing, and ongoing operational costs.

  • Competition with Private Stores:
There could be concerns about fair competition with private grocery stores.

  • Operational Efficiency:
Ensuring the store is well-managed and efficient can be a challenge.

  • Community Engagement:
Successful city-run grocery stores require strong community support and engagement.
Examples:

St. Paul, Kansas, and Atlanta:

Similar government-supported grocery stores already exist in these locations.

So these exist…but have to be subsidized by tax dollars?

Ay-yi-yi.

Often when we hear something is “affordable” or “lower cost”, what they really mean is that they make ends meet because government is diverting tax dollars to it.

They aren’t doing it cheaper. They’re just diverting the cost to people who have no choice.

And he’s on track to become mayor of the city which has long been the global capital of Capitalism.

At least he’s being honest. It’s better than somebody who thinks that, but lies about it to avoid the blowback.
Agree. I don't think he will win either. If Republicans run someone somewhat moderate they will win. Could win a congressional race down the road maybe.

Republicans have zero chance, whoever they run. And they’ve already nominated Curtis Sliwa, who…isn’t going to factor.

A poll I saw showed that Cuomo could be competitive as an independent in a race without Adams in it, but not in a race with Adams in it. Adams can’t win in either scenario.

If that’s right, then the only hope to thwart Memdani is for Cuomo to get in and Adams to drop out. It might help if Sliwa encourages any R voters to support Cuomo, too.
