Will NYC elect a socialist mayor?

It is, today. We see the model has issues, no problem moving toward Sweden.
Uh oh. Now you did it.

Execution-wise, it's going to be an immense battle with low probability.

Which is a lower probability: one of the parties going sane or a billionaire trying to create one? I used to have high hopes that something like jungle primaries or ranked choice voting would work. So far it doesn't appear that way. Every four years we seem to say, "Well, it can't get worse", then it does.

And the odds that Yang would win are pretty low. The same progressives would have voted as they look like they will now, and the more moderate vote would be split between Cuomo and Yang.

Hochul, to her credit, has nixed the idea of raising taxes on the wealthy.
That's not nearly enough. NY needs massive tax cuts for the middle and upper classes to stop the bleeding which would require massive cuts of social services.

Mamdani leads 43-34 over Cuomo with 410k early votes in (about 40% of the expected total) with Lander back at 13% and everyone else under 5%. This is all early vote, which is expected to be much better for Mamdani than Election Day vote

Schumer would have hurt Cuomo if Schumer endorsed him

I’d argue that most endorsements these days are politically negligible.

I was already kind of thinking that before Trump came along. But Trump confirmed the suspicion.

Virtually the entire political establishment was, to one degree or another, opposed to him. At one time, that would’ve been insurmountable for a candidate. Anymore, I think it’s a tree falling in a forest.

There is a balance that both sides suck at. Making places less attractive for lower income levels because they can't as easily pack up and move isn't a great idea either, IMHO. Feudalism was great if you were at the upper end. The "We are all going to die" comment carries with it the unspoken, "but it's ok if the person is younger as long as they are poor."

For traditional conservatives, like Aloha, the argument between him and me is where to place the line. Now there is a push that there shouldn't be a line be it all the way left or all the way right.
NY is already over the line on taxes.

But we all know the rich don’t pay their fair share. Rent freeze is good. Government grocery stores are good. Capitalism is bad. Hamas is good. Free public transportation. Social workers in lieu of cops.

Man, utopia.

It’s a pity. But not a surprise.

But does this make the general election more interesting than it otherwise would’ve been?

I’ve thought for a long time that Eric Adams was a political zombie - even before he became an independent. I still do. But maybe this creates some unexpected dynamics.
This is a precursor to an AOC presidential campaign

One good thing about him winning, if he implements everything he promises. There will be no need for Lawyers. 👏👏👏

I do find it funny in one way, when Cuomo was Gov he was seen by many complaining tonight as the furthest left human in existence. A full on socialist if not communist. Now suddenly there is a realization that wasn't true.

But good news, Mamdani is a populist and I know how beloved populism is with some.
