What will we do about the looming retirement crisis?

Whoa man. I really disagree.

We're going into an era that's going to be dominated by tech, specifically AI.

Outside of physically building stuff, there won't be a future employment structure for most of the white collar jobs that exist today. The have and have not are going to greatly widen. Trading daily labor for wages will be considered archaic

You either have capital or not. Those that do will get very rich. Those that don't are going to be continuing to fight for less and less scraps.

There's no special sauce about America. We had massive advantages that resulted from the outcome of WW2. An industrial base that's the wasn't destroyed, etc.... We've lived off of that a long time. That's coming to an end
I've become a huge fan of your style of cynicism.

It doesn’t matter what it’s called. Eventually it will lead to Europe. The only reason we have the growth we do is because we’re running up deficits, instead paying higher taxes.

The reality is we can only provide welfare because we have excess goods/services, which is only created through productivity gains. If we significantly raise taxes, we’re going to lose our growth, which eventually leads to fewer services for fewer people. The government can’t be all things to all people.

You think that graph says something good about America?

I don't. I think it says that America is dominated by a handful of companies that grow far too large too fast, while Europe is still filled with reasonably sized businesses. I think Europe's model is far more sustainable long-term.

I know that runs against ideas about economies of scale, but it also doesn't require "too big to fail."

I love stuff like that. I have a decent amount of random shit. Now that cray isn’t here to shred me I love American pickers and pawn stars and all that. Just by way of example I have a full Bball uniform and cursive Indiana sweatsuit that Rawlings made decades ago to pitch IU
What kind of pathethic, twinkle toed communist cock sucker likes so**er? (I aint payin no kangaroo court fine for saying that word!)

Looming retirement crisis might hit home... I totaled my brand new company driver today. Not my fault by any means -- I got hit by some dingbat who ran a stoplight -- but the one owner who plays more of an operations role is a hardass about the vehicles and gets downright shitty at any one who even lets his car get a little dirty, yet alone crashes one. I may end up looking for one of those sweet do nothing work from home jobs. I'll work cheap.

The only answer. Die poor with several ex wives living in your (my) houses.
It's the only way to pay back for all of my evil life decisions, pulling them out of homeless shelters. I'm a giver.

So, you have the entire ensemble? Takes a dedicated dude to pull it off.

Also requires an Aston Martin Vantage, and you be stylin’.

If I had the money I’d probably do it too. No hate from me.
My father-in-law loved being in the Porsche club of America. That was his deal when he'd finally gotten enough money to feel secure in retirement. He bought a 911 and then ran time trials for around 25 years. I loved watching him get around the track. In this picture, he's in his mid-70s in the corkscrew at Laguna.

I hope we're all so lucky.

There’s a great documentary called “Winning: The Racing Life of Paul Newman”. It focuses only on his racing. Incredible stuff. Interestingly, it was done by Adam Carolla who owns a few of Newmans old race cars.

I'll have to find that and watch. Love stuff like that.

lol Yeah.... no.

our economy currently needs a deeper base of people than we can populate on our own, AI/ skynet takeover notwithstanding. Musk has said as much many times. our entitlement programs need the same. non-citizens on payrolls currently pay into programs they don't receive benefits from. that topic is lost in today's political climate. a sensible but large, steady stream of potential new citizens solves many of our population collapse issues.

the problem is one side wants to demonize all migrants and the other wants to canonize all illegals. insanity.

No, one side doesn't want to 'demonie all migrants'. That side wants legal immigrants - ones that don't tax our social welfare systems and contribute to society.

The other side wants more welfare dependents that they use to buy votes.

Illegal immigrants are a net drain. Full stop. A huge portion of their earnings are under the table and untaxed, the exact figure is unknowable. And that doesn’t even get into remittances.

Welcome Doc Brule to the board. You just ran head first into the Dream Team. It’s a well oiled machine coached by the great @mcmurtry66. My advice, listen and learn. We usually hold tryouts in the fall at the annual in Auburn.

I don't agree with this -- especially the first sentiment, but the second one as well.

There are people on both sides of the immigration debate who have absolutist views, yes. And they are often the loudest people -- or the subject of nutpicking by people trying to discredit more moderate views they disagree with.

It's true that public sentiment has become more restrictionist in recent years, but I don't think it's divided as you describe. Personally, I think there's fairly broad consensus that we need to tighten security at the border (finally). And there's a high (but less high) level of support of deporting people who are here illegally. Beyond that, it gets more mixed.

Not only do I not get the impression that public sentiment supports the nativist view, I don't even think it would describe the view of most Trump voters. Trump himself has expressed support for increased levels of legal immigration -- and he did so back before and during his first term as well.

Recall that this was recently the subject of a public dust-up between Steve Bannon and Elon Musk -- specifically over increasing H1B visas.

Trump stayed curiously (and uncharacteristically) silent on it for a few days...before finally voicing his support for H1Bs....to Elon's delight, I'm sure.

The irony here is that large numbers of migrants will inevitably be the solution to our entitlement problems, among others.
Whoo-boy. That would be really nice if it came to be. But, needless to say, I'm very skeptical of this.

Two things have simultaneously happened in the country over the past several decades:

1) We've taken in many millions -- how many is anybody's guess, depends who you ask -- of migrants.
2) Entitlement finances have deteriorated to a point where the two major programs are actuarily insolvent.

So when does this solution kick in? If large amounts of immigration is the solution, why are the entitlements still so far underwater?
