What HOF Big 10 coach was a D-2 player and a former high school head coach

Shit..we would take Steve Alford IN A MINUTE...it's all about chemistry...don't care what happened with the Pierre Pierce thing, UCLA was NEVER a fit for him, send him to South Bend PRONTO!
Mike Brey is heads and shoulders better than Alford as a coach. Give Brey the horses that Alford had at UCLA and he would have taken them to the F4.

What horses
Ike Anigbogu?
TJ Leaf?
Aaron Holiday?
Kevon Looney?
Lonzo Ball? (has he made the Lakers faithful forget Magic as touted?)

Everyone knows in LA it’s about the bling. Why the Pacers took so many of these guys escapes me.

If anyone does go to the 3A regionals, Pat Graham's son Cade is playing for Evv Memorial. I had heard he wasn't a star, but he must have had a good final game.

In other Evv Memorial news, the longtime girls coach and certified cheater, Bruce Dockery, is retiring. His teams haven't been as successful lately and maybe he has run out of tricks he needed to win. I'm proud to have had a part in getting him busted for one offense. It could have been two if I had recorded his conversation with me.
I really enjoyed watching Pat play and will try to watch the Memorial Regional game.

I seem to remember being able to lock a thread. I would have locked this one if I knew how.

You aren't helping your defense of Alford much. Didn't he recruit these guys? If they aren't "horses", he was either a poor judge of talent, or not very good at player development.

Personally, I have to question the judgement of any coach who would recruit the Ball boys, no matter how good. It wasn't like Steve didn't have an idea that the old man would be a giant pain in the ass. He was making demands for his kids before they ever left high school.

I can't stand Alford--and it has nothing to do with my appreciation of Indiana basketball history. I loved Steve when he played, and I still rooted for him through his first couple coaching stops.

Then he sent a religious advisor to his team to go talk to a rape victim about the value of forgiveness--contributing to her eventual non-cooperation with the investigation of her rape by one of his basketball players.

If he were coaching my daughter's peewee soccer league, I'd pull her out of it. He's unfit.

Ok, let me rephrase the question because it was a bit subjective; how many burger boys did Alford sign at UCLA compared to Brey at ND?

If he hadn’t taken Ball he would have lost his job sooner. UCLA and LA run on bling. I will try to look at 5 star rated recruits over the last few years. Many are overrated but once tagged they often maintain momentum. That was my thought about the Pacers taking these guys. They get the rep and just keep going.

Even when Wooden was there (as great as he was) recruiting was more or less handled for him. The greatest players in the country year after year were enticed to play for UCLA.

Look at Steve Lavin’s tenure at UCLA. It is similar to Alford’s experience there. Lot’s of burgers and wins and NCAA appearances Ith decent runs and the first sub par season and fired. UCLA is a case by itself.

These posters trashing Alford are the same type that supported the IHSAA changing to class basketball.
What a stupid post. You are a first class dumbass. Maybe people judge Steve Alford's potential success at IU based on his 25 year history as a head coach? There is a plethora of history that says he wouldn't be elite here, so maybe let's just go off of that instead of the b*llshit theories that you are crafting in your tiny brain.

Jeez and I thought the extreme activism of UCLA alums with respect to the basketball program and recruiting was well known. Apparently this is the first time you heard about it so I was mistaken.

And here https://www.sports-reference.com/cbb/coaches/steve-alford-1.html is that 25 year history.

Certainly nothing that looks that elite.......of course IU hasn't exactly been great during that time frame either.

His teams have found their way into the top 25 at one point during the season in 15 of the last 20 years. He has more conference tourney Titles at Iowa (2), than IU has total (0). His NCAA tourney results HAVE sucked.

Once again, I'm not saying he is an elite coach. But those results don't look worse than IU's to me. Unfortunately, IU has been a pretty low bar.

I feel like you are responding to a different post than you quoted.

I'm not sure what your point is. Are you saying that because Alford has similar results to iu the past 25 years that he should have just been coaching here? Are you saying that we should just hire a coach with similar results to what we've had and be happy?

All this says to me is that Alford has been pretty mediocre and not a guy you would hand over the keys to.

If people are saying, 'he couldn't be any worse,' and using that as their basis for supporting an alford hire, I'd say theyve already lost their argument. Unless there is just so much nostalgia love for Alford that we wouldn't care if he was successful here...which I know is bs.

I'n not making any point in regards to whether he should be here on not.

You were pretty clear in calling someone stupid, and then stating that "people judge Steve Alford's potential success at IU based on his 25 year history", and a "plethora of history". I have seen numerous threads on SA lately, however I haven't seen anyone actually provide his coaching record. I thought it appropriate to add that to this thread. People can look at his record and think whatever they want.

This is a good article about the top ten rated players in each high school class since 1998. After the top ten it becomes even more hit and miss. Usually about 30 players receive five star. It would be interesting (but a lot of work) to go through all five star players to see how they actually did in college and the pros. In the article it is amusing to see NBA HOF’s (to be) that were unrated in high school and Steph Curry is a notable example.

It was clear to me that is what you intended but the thinking for yourself part isn’t well received here.

I really thought Ike might have a shot at being a very good sub. I think Aaron has a good chance once he gets a little stronger. The kid is lightning quick with a very fluid shot. Looney went to UCLA? I didn't realize that. He is a good role player for GS. Now Lonzo needs a shot to be great. Magic didn't have a shot either when he first got to the NBA. I think Lonzo has a chance to be great. His court awareness is very good. TJ is developing into a good role player. I've noticed he gets a lot of tip ins lately. Last night he had a real nice one. This means he is getting more active.

BVH

I was responding to this post because I thought the theory he was referencing was about recruiting at UCLA.

So,

"Thinking for yourself" = agreeing with you

Got it.
Not at all. In the case of this thread if you support Alford you have a tiny brain and are a sock puppet and wear a tin foil hat and are spewing BS so hostile and disrespectful but unfortunately standard message board responses.

So, once again, a coach from Ohio who coaches at a mid-major is off limits. RMK is certainly unique. Alford is no RMK

"gone" instead of "went"

At least we know you aren't feepie.

Or, a good coach.

Not even sure what this means.

Has a computer scientist from Australia applied to be our coach?

BTW, how come no one ever brings up Isaiah Thomas as a possible coach. He played at Indiana, has college and pro (in Indiana) experience, and is in the Top 50 NBA players. Hmmm, I wonder what box does he not check.

Don’t you expect more from a first round pick like TJ.

Not sure what you mean about Magic. He started from day one and led them to the nba championship his rookie season. As I remember Kareem had a bad cluster headache for the final game and Magic played center and had a great game at center and they won the championship.

It looks like Luke Walton will be fired. I saw an article that he should be considered for the UCLA position.

TJ wasn't a lottery pick. Didn't we pick later that year? He only played one year at UCLA so I wasn't expected him to be great since he wasn't top 10. He has gotten better which is good for him. Yes, I heard about Walton to UCLA as well. I also heard Bill is really cheering it up.

Wow-Luke at UCLA will be interesting. The alumni politics will change with Bill in the background.

I believe he meant that Magic's shot was ugly when he first entered the NBA, just like Lonzo's is. They both look like they are throwing a boulder using a set shot.

Okay. Yeah I remember.

I have this memory of him shooting about 12’ hook shots in the lane when he started for Kareem in the 7th game. He buried them but different trajectory than Kareem. :)

I have been to one 7th game. Rockets vs Knicks and it was a great game. I always hated Starks as did many Pacers fans and was so happy the Rockets won.

Somebody up above said it must have been terrible for me when the Pacers took Reggie but no of course not. Alford was a great catch square and shoot player and not the kind that does well in the NBA. I liked watching Reggie play.

I'll make this as brief as possible. He had IHSAA offenses related directly at only him for the soccer program that resulted in forfeiting matches.

My daughter played her 2nd year of AAU basketball with a team of girls that would feed into her high school. The team sponsor and dad got all the girls together, but his main goal was to get a college scholarship for his daughter. The 5 main players of this team lost one game playing together in 3 years of middle school.

Dockery realized an opportunity to steal players from his rival and play them with a freshman he had that was going to be an excellent post player (she would become a Miss Basketball runner-up). He got the sponsor of the team to come play for him first. He worked on the other 4. Dockery offered to allow our daughters to get a 100% tuition assistance that is reserved for needs based students in the diocese. None of us were Catholic nor would we have qualified for financial assistance. Four of us told him to GFY, but never told anyone besides each other.

The violation with the IHSAA was when the sponsor I mentioned showed up at one of our conference games and was trying to hide that he was videotaping our game. I saw it and let our coach know at halftime. He walked to the other coach and pointed out what was going on. Both coaches reported it and Dockery was punished by the IHSAA. This was at least strike 2. I have to believe he was caught other times and was only the tip of the iceberg for shady or punishable acts.

Edit: I stand corrected, he illegally contact another girl just after my daughters class and cost the girl eligibility.

i've seen catholic school get away with that before. the religion angle usually works. the dad should have converted to catholicism. that would have done it

No, it is more about a private school loose with the rules. He was the John Calipari of girl's high school basketball.

So, getting back to my original post, how many Big 10 basketball programs have been coached by an All-American alum and how successful were they?

I believe he meant that Magic's shot was ugly when he first entered the NBA, just like Lonzo's is. They both look like they are throwing a boulder using a set shot.
Exactly. In fact Magic scored a lot when he first got in the league a lot like this Ben Simmons. If Simmons ever gets a jump shot he will be a superstar. He's already an all star with it.
