We should invite these guys to the Cooler

Not really any sympathetic people in this exchange.
Yeah but one is an elected official in the most powerful political body in the world and the other gets high and writes jokes. What the hell is this country coming to. Can you imagine Tip O’Neil or Bob Dole doing this shit.

Attracting the kind of people to flip their state blue? Yeah, I'd say that's doing something right.

I think I saw some interesting data on this one time I might have to look for it again. But I think the transplants are actually voting R for the most part. It’s native born Texans that seem to be trending more Democratic.

I actually wonder. Same with fla. we’ll see. Homestead. No state income. Cheap college. Will be interesting what they look like in a decade
For the most part, people aren't moving from California to the middle of the prairie. They are moving to growing urban areas, attracted by jobs, and they are bringing their modern, progressive ideas with them.

My understanding is it's both. Transplants are shifting the state left, but so are Texans because of both age demos and an increasing voter participation rate among Hispanics.

I think the role of transplants is probably actually overstated. They might get headlines, but they are a drop in the bucket in terms of numbers.

I wouldn’t worry about Texas voters. People are fleeing the blue states for tx in droves. They’re doing something right
People are fleeing states like California not for politics, but rather natural disasters, like fires and earthquakes.

Saw a piece on CBS Sunday Morning where the coastal states that have earthquakes/hurricanes/fires/floods/droughts/etc. are becoming uninhabitable. Climatologists are saying the best places to live in the future will be the Great Lakes region. Madison, Wisconsin was singled out to be the ideal city.

I don’t know if that’s true. Austin is picking up silicon tech and Miami is picking up Wall Street types. No state income, business friendly, Covid allowing folks to work from home with big lots is pushing the move. I have zero reason to believe they’re bringing progressive anything with them. Ellison isn’t. Musk isn’t.

Yep. Austin and Dallas growth has been nuts. Austin is a very progressive area.

Disagree. GA isn’t Fla and tx re business regs, no state income, homestead etc.
Right but it’s what Goat is alluding to. Large urban sprawl population out growing the rural parts of the state.

I suppose it might really end up depending on what the state parties care about. Everyone loves low taxes, but these new arrivals aren't going to join the FL and TX GOP so they can fight against gays and immigrants.

The CEOs who are worth billions are in many cases different than their employees.

I don’t follow what you’re saying
He's saying Texas is being urbanized, and there's no indication these new urbanites are going to vote Republican. I was pointing out that this urbanization is partially a result of transplants from other states, which are largely moving to cities, not to the country. So add 2 + 2 and you get Blue.

People moving to traditionally red states are the kind of folks moving to more urban areas. I would rate urban and suburban areas as more blue than rural areas.

Yeah but that doesn’t hold for fla who is seeing mirror growth

As I said to goat that doesn’t hold for fla. from what I’ve gathered many are fleeing taxes and biz regulations. It would be contradictory to then go to a red state and vote in kind with what you fled

Businesses might relocate due to taxes and regulations, and employees might follow, but the people themselves aren't relocating for those reasons.

Possible Texas is more cosmopolitan than Florida. There’s some truth to both arguments we’re making I suspect.

Of course they do. Startups. Startups can yield a 100k a year and be sustainable in fla and tax. Single member llcs. Fla has no income tax. Fav biz regs. Homestead. 11 Public universities under 7 grand. Affordable homes. You think people are going to come from calif to that and vote for the oppressive calif bs? Nonsense.

Yeah, I know what you were saying, but I'm just pointing out there are other ways they may differ.

Florida is the south and Texas is, well, Texas. As the Lone Star label says - The national beer of Texas.

Florida is Alabama east on the panhandle and anyone who would live inland has to be insane. Plus it has all those retirees from red states in the Midwest. Demographics are really different and it’s easy to see why Florida is getting more red and Texas more purple.

Slightly off topic, but I’ll leave this here before a Southern Indiana Trumplican posts their obligatory “California is a socialist mess and in massive debt” nonsense.

A $15 billion surplus during a pandemic is impressive. Fact is, California is a very well ran state, fiscally. There are some safeguards in place that would make traditional conservatives proud.
