I'm guessing Dolson is in the drivers seat now after doing an amazing job with FB (literally worth tens of millions of dollars to IU) and from what I can tell he wanted to move on from Woody last year (good call!). He has delivered great results as AD. I don't know who he hires, but I think there is a good chance he is left along to make the decision (no more trustee and donor input -- they don't know anything about hiring coaches) and he gets it right. Go Scott go.
Hard to tell at this point which billionaires are worse at picking bball coaches, the Tysons or the Cooks.
Their decisions led to this terrible bball program and they would like a good bball program. Some of them won't be listened to anymore.
Look, I'm just holding out hope we can make a good hire next time around. If people are skeptical I get it, our history of hiring coaches is not good.
The Raiders’ owner is bringing in Brady so they have someone that really knows something about football on the ownership team to help pick a new coach.

Those sorts of moves only work if they allow the guys like Brady to actually make the decisions. Often, they pay them well, they say things like what you said about why they’re there, but the Brady like people just end up being marketing props. If Raiders ownership were actually serious about winning, they’d give up basically all football operations power, hire a good, proven GM, and let them do their job.
Didn't Dolson hire a "search firm" to identify candidates for the football job? An actual outside entity who earns their keep doing this?
IIRC, basketball has in the past, constructed "search panels", insiders who supposedly do what the search firm does. I remember Harry Gonzo being a prominent part of the group that hired Archie.
Anyway, hire the firm, clearly lay out what you're looking for, and conduct the interviews. After that it's hope for the best.
Yea, but I think those firms help come up with a list of actionable coaches, put out no-name "feelers" to gauge interest, and do background checks. The decision is likely down the AD, and of course they need to convince the candidate to come here.
A search panel hired Davis, they didn't even interview anyone else (insane). I think Fred sort of did he own thing with the Archie hire, I don't recall a panel for that one. That's one instance our AD had a fairly clear shot at the hire and he just got it wrong, part of the issue was Fred didn't have AD experience, but he acted reasonably and just got it wrong.
Does Brady know anything about hiring a coach? Maybe. But players, even great ones, can be bad execs. Plenty of examples. MJ for one.
I believe Davis sincere and rumor has it that Brady is supporting Ben Johnson from the Lions. I don’t know what the deal is with their GM that is also a vacancy. There is always risk but good managers respect the ability of competent people other than themselves, albeit Brady or a new GM, and that was my point.

When it's all going down, IMO, Stevens won't be part of that pool, nor will Beard, or Pearl, or Donovan, or any of the names we love to bring up.
Probably not. I've got no idea who we should hire. I'm counting on Scott to figure it out -- fingers crossed.
I have zero insight into the inner workings of IU basketball, but I would suggest that people in control, well, like being in control. Ceding control for a "better outcome" isn't something that people in power are inclined to do.

I don’t think Stevens would be either. Like last time he’ll just be a phone call, or calls, directly from Dolson. He wouldn’t come up on any search firms radar. And the others likely wouldn’t have interest.
IU is going to have to go all in on devoting resources to football until the stupid basketball politics get out of their own way. I'm looking at you Mr. Pacers announcer.
Yea, I agree. This may be more of the people in control losing the internal political battle. It's going to be harder to go against Scott after his raise/extension and big revenue increases from football. And those who wanted to hire Woody and then keep him around with more NIL look pretty stupid right now.
As I keep saying, I'm just trying to find reasons to be optimistic about the next hire and I post on this site for entertainment. Scott may be in control of this hire and get it wrong, I don't know. I do think 10+ coaches would do pretty well here. I also get the perspective that there isn't much reason for hope after the last 25 year, maybe that's right.
IU is close. Even with Woodsons program, we’ve had quite a lot of elite talent consider us in recent years. Pretty much any coach that runs stuff that is in any way appealing to today’s players…will have success recruiting both HS kids and portal kids.
Woodson has us as a fringe NCAA program as it is…even a little better program manager, game coach, a coach with even just slightly more appealing style…would obviously make the team a little better. And a consistent NCAA caliber team gets the fan base energized again. And everyone starts to see the Indiana machine kick back on.

With NIL/portal, I think we could, broadly speaking, improve very quickly, somewhere between what UL and UK just did with their first year coaches.
My money is on there being a Jewish man that started his head coaching career in the state ending his coaching career in the state.
Arkansas plays in Rupp February 1st. That will be one helluva interesting game for just the crowd reaction alone.
One thing about UK, they take their program seriously. Calipari won a title, a couple of FFs, 7 or 8 conference titles/conference tourney championships and after two consecutive seasons of double digit losses on his record…GONE!
Could be about the record, but it could also be because of NIL. Maybe UK decided having a known sleeze like Calipari was no longer worth it since paying players is allowed now.
He had way too high a priority on one and dones to the NBA. If he promised a recruit he would start then he would start whether he deserved it or not. His offense was too old similar to what we have.
The guy you're replying to seems to see IU Basketball as the Cook Corporate team. I'm not calling BS on that but again, I'd rather Dolson be allowed to do his job.
In what universe would Chris Beard leave Ole Miss for this shitshow….move along to another realistic candidate
