When President Trump was a moderate Democrat in NYC, he was a hero in the Black community(and I use the descriptor community in a very broad sense). Multiple honors and awards for his philanthropy and support for the minorities and NYC in general. He neither uses alcohol nor tobacco, and neither do his children.
He upset the apple cart of national politics: Had he not won in '16, the depth of criminal corruption among those in power would not have been exposed.
He didn't understand fully the rot existing in both parties, and trusted in the integrity of people not deserving that trust.
He understands fully now.

And if you're focused on Republican candidates, the "new guard" is not much better in elections. The "old guard" is 0-2 since GWB (who was 2-2 and pretty old guard) while the "new guard" is 1-1 and you're predicting another loss for them.
All that said, I think you're better off looking at who those candidates were running against. Beating Hillary wasn't the Herculean task that beating Obama was. A decent "old guard" candidate could have boat-raced Biden in 2020, but y'all were stuck with the incumbent.

I don't think today's Reagan would be campaigning on trickle down economics. But I don't think he'd be doing what Trump is doing either. Reagan was extremely popular with the working class whites that Mark is talking about. He just didn't have the ethical and personality defects that Trump does. I'm not a huge fan of Reagan or his policies, but he'd be boat-racing Harris. Obama vs. Reagan would be one of those epic video game clashes pitting stars from different eras against each other. Cy Young facing off against Shohei Otani.
Reagan also had the advantage of running against Carter. Not a tough race.

When I saw that video, it made me sick. I have no idea what their situation is, and how honest all the reporting about it is, but that never should have been made public. Such a disgraceful way to treat a great man. He might still be perfectly lucid and truly looking forward to voting for Harris, but that video was embarrassing, and any family member with an ounce of sense would have done whatever they could to shut it down.
There was a longer clip in MTIOTF's Carter thread that showed them wheeling him into place while upright and then reclining the wheelchair back so he could see the flyover they were doing for him. That wasn't as bad as seeing the short clip with him already laid back with his mouth gaping open.
Didn't intend that to be a defense. Just saying that the longer, presumably whole/real/authorized clip wasn't as shocking to the conscience as the short one that started this thread. Neither should have been released -- or posted.

This was part of CBS Evening News on 10/1.
It appears the family invited CBS Evening News in to film the Navy jet flyover honoring President Carter’s 100th birthday. I assume the insight that President Carter wasn’t excited about his birthday but did want to survive to vote for VP Harris was part of the news. All in all a nice news story for CBS Evening News to run before CHS hosted the VP debate. No way the party currently run by a person lacking character and honor can compete with this exemplary package.

Clinton was impeached because he lied under oath about his relationship with an intern. If he had just had relations with her then no impeachment would have been brought up. It was the lying. I get it because if we can lie under oath and get away with it then what does that do to our justice system?
I do not believe Trump was leading a rebellion because he handed over the keys to the White House to Joe Biden. What Trump was wanting was to have his grievances heard concerning the Democrats cheating in the 2020 election.
