Make America Healthy Again

I'm 50 with a 7 year old child, so when I think about adding 5 or 10 years to my life, we're talking about seeing college graduation, marriage and hopefully grandkids.

It is a good goal. I am soon 64 with a 2-year-old grandchild. I know college graduation is very iffy, high school will be possible with work. Doing what I can.

It is the downside to following the advice to have kids later. We had our kids later, our kids are having kids later. So where my grandparents lived to see my 3 older siblings married, having waited, we probably won't make that.

What is your definition of “processed food”? I make my daily muffin out of oat bran, high protein granola, canned pumpkin, egg whites from a carton, protein powder, walnuts, and craisans. All of that except the walnuts are processed, correct? Mixing that together and baking them is also processing. My point is, using the word processing in connection with food doesn’t mean very much, to me anyway.

Yeah, the term processed food is rather generic. Guess I'm referring more to ready to eat or quick prepare items that have a lot of additives that are either flavor/texture enhancement and/or preservatives.

Your muffin wouldn't qualify. A bag of Hostess Mini muffins would.

I get that, a bunch of unpronounceable additives to make crap seem like real food would be processed food.

Health conscious RFK Jr is an odd pairing with McDonald’s loving Trump?
Yeah RFK is certainly "health conscious", which distinguishes him from Trump. But apparently he takes after Trump in another area as 3 seperate women have stepped forward to claim they had affairs with Bobby THIS YEAR...

They all worked at his non-profit antii-vax outfit. I sense a pattern...

Frozen or canned vegetables is a very viable option. Maybe not as ideal as fresh but much healthier than processed foods
In almost every situation imaginable, frozen vegetables are just as nutritious as fresh ones. In most situations, so are canned, but the canning process can break down some nutrients in certain produce.

Good grief….we are talking about food.

Isn’t there another thread where you can post about your infatuation with Trump’s weight or infidelity?

Interesting
The main problem with frozen plants is quality, not nutrition. You can't freeze lettuce, then thaw it out and make a sandwich. It will be soggy as hell. So all the different types of fresh meals you might make - salads, etc. - won't work. But if it's a cooked meal, it works fine. Frozen broccoli works just as well in pasta as fresh broccoli, and it has all the same vitamins.

I understand completely. You got started a little late. 🤣 We only have a daughter and she's grown and married with two kids.

I have gardened extensively for years.
Lettuce
Cabbage
Radishes
Carrots
Bush Green beans
Sweet corn
3-4 varieties tomatoes
Asparagus
Broccoli
Cukes (pickles)
Mint (mojitos)
Strawberries
Dill
Sage

Late summer and early fall are canning season.
As organic as possible.

My neighbor has 18 laying hens, So all eggs are free.

It just takes effort and perseverance.

Gardening is so relaxing. We haven't done it in a few years, but we have a 30X30 that we'd do a couple rows of corn, lettuce, tomatoes, green beans, peas, rhubarb, green peppers, cabbage, cucumbers and then have another 10X5 bed for just strawberries.

First year we did it, we planted pumpkins. Horrible idea. Takes over the whole garden.

In laws also have eggs. Fresh is the way to go.

No peppers?
My Son in law loves hot peppers and all hot sauce, so the peppers, to include greens and bananas and jalapeños come from their raised beds.
Carefully cleaned(ribs and seeds) jalas, stuffed with sharp cheddar/cream cheese, some HVR mix , wrapped in bacon,
woo Lad!

Let's also tackle the canard that organic means it has more nutrients. Mostly not true, it can be for Omega-3 and polyphenols. But even in those cases, it isn't always true.

I think the unintended consequence of touting organic as the only way to go leads people to believe it doesn't matter if they eat the boxed food or the spinach they can afford.

No, I just had a surprise! I have another one who is in college :)
Still precious (most of the time:)) even if she was a surprise. At least she's not got another sibling close to her age to fight with. Out two grand kids (2 and 4) will play well together and then 30 seconds later may be fighting over a toy that both want.
