The New Pope Thread

Well that was certainly quick.

You'd have to think that would favor Parolin.
I have only superficial interest since I’m not Catholic so I really don’t know much about any of the candidates. I do prefer a conservative church over a liberal one since I’m conservative, but there will be no impact on me. Is that guy more conservative than the previous Pope.

Catholicism is a little too "child-rapey" for me, but the whole Black Smoke/White Smoke thing is pretty cool.
co sign. i defended the arch diocese for years. horrible. rico shit. disgusting creeps top down. and it's a shame. i'm a catholic. 12 years of catholic school. loved it. love all the trappings. the tradition. the ceremony. all of it made for a wonderful, more meaningful childhood. it's a shame

The conclave starts in a few hours, and I wanted a place to post all of our pope-related shit. If you have a prediction, put it here. If you don't, whatever. If you just want to abuse Catholics go for it. This thread is really just a placeholder for when they finally make the announcement.

Should it be "we" or "they" have a new Pope?

Have to admit I have to smile with all those in the square who are so over joyed. God bless them.

A guy who went to my Catholic high school (I know his brother pretty well) appeared before the Indiana General Assembly about 6 or 7 years ago and testified about having been molested by a priest here in Evansville when he was in grade school. That would've been in the mid-to-late 1980s.

As I recall, he had never told anybody about it until right about the time he appeared. He had held that secret in for decades. I watched the video of his appearance and literally had tears in my eyes. And just anger.

The priest he named was already dead. But he was somebody who was held in high esteem...and still had defenders even after all this.

I'm not super conservative on social issues.

But I prefer a conservative Pope as well. I've always taken some solace in the Catholic Church being slow and reluctant to shift around to the moral volatility we see in the world....even if I come down in different places than they do on some issues.

The world needs institutions like that, I think.

On the vast majority of issues, every Pope is a conservative.

He's only 69 years old, too. So he'll in all likelihood be Pope for quite some time.

He's originally from Chicago. Our bishop here in Evansville, Joseph Siegel, hails from Chicago and was auxiliary bishop up there before becoming our bishop.

I wonder if Bishop Siegel knows Prevost. I'd guess that he does -- even if Prevost has been in Latin America for a long time.

I'm reading that Prevost has a bit of a checkered past on the sexual abuse issue. Ugh.

SNAP has been very critical of his handling of an abuse case in Peru.

Trump will take credit.

He's an American native. But, as NBC commentator said, he's spent roughly a third of life in Chicago, a third of his life in Peru, and a third of his life in Rome.

So, yes, he's American. But not in the way that Cardinal Timothy Dolan, for example, is American.

Ugh is right. The church lost a ton of us. Be nice to be open and transparent and rebuild the faith

Here's Wikipedia's summation of the controversy.

In 2000, Prevost allowed Father James Ray, an Augustinian priest, to reside at St. John Stone Friary in Chicago. Ray had been suspended from public ministry since 1991 due to credible accusations of sexual abuse of minors. Although the priory was close to a Catholic elementary school, Prevost did not notify the school administration about Ray.
That's not good. But it's certainly not the most egregious failing. He shouldn't have put the priest near a school. And, if he did, he should've at least notified the school.

On a scale of 1-10 of the severity of these kinds of things, that's probably about a 2.

Another woke pope.
Augustinians are, to my understanding, to a large degree more traditionalist than (say) Jesuits.

Google tells me Augustinians emphasize a life of prayer and charitable service to the local community. Not nearly as much emphasis on social justice and liberal education as the Jesuits, the aspect which I assume you think of as "woke"

Another quick little note.

Leo XIV is of the Augustinian order. I don't know a whole lot about that order. But it's named for Saint Augustine of Hippo. Augustine was well-known to be a lothario. The dude shagged lots and lots of women before his conversion.

One of his most famous quotes, written as he was struggling with the pulls of faith and the pulls of the flesh, is just great:

iu

Not yet! 🤣 🤣

...social justice and liberal education as the Jesuits, the aspect which I assume you think of as "woke"

I certainly wouldn't use the term "woke" in this context.

But I would say that criticizing capitalism, in the guise of advocating for the interests of the world's poor, is counterproductive. Capitalism is the best cure for poverty the world has ever known. If somebody wants people lifted out of poverty, they should promote capitalism...not resist it (as Francis did).
