The moral bankruptcy of (certain forms of) conservative both-sidesism on this forum

Take a closer look at what you did. You try to compare David Duke with the diffuse and decentralized group Antifa. How can that be a comparison? Offer up a person in Antifa and they are comparable to Duke. Offer up a group and they are comparable to Antifa. You want to compare Duke with Jeong, have at it. And then be prepared to talk about them as people who are complex. We'd all be better off if we did that. We'd all be better of if we could be like this.

I should have put Duke and Jeong together, rhetorically that would make more sense. I was not an English major in college, so forgive my lack of construction at times. But, while disjointed, my point stands.

Oh, and your last point and link, that is where I am trying to come from however inartful my ability to explain myself may be.

The only difference here Goat is that most conservative people lump Nazis, White Nationalists, Antifa, racists (no matter their color), et. al. into a group that we will call "deplorable". So when a guy like David Duke mouths off about White Supremacy, I say "What a douche, that guy is deplorable." And that covers everything about him. Now, when Antifa riots over a conservative speaker talking on a college campus and uses that as an excuse to hit nonracist people with tire locks and when white supremacists square off against them all dressed up in poor Renaissance cosplay and beat people, I say "What a bunch of dirtbags, going around beating on people for no good reason." And when a bunch of douches march around with tiki torches and yell insane things I say "What douchebags, we should ridicule them and ensure that they occupy the smallest piece of ideological territory in this country as possible and we beat them with superior classically liberal (all men are created equal) ideals."

So this annoys you all that we would draw a moral equivalency. Antifa violence is bad yes, but it is less bad than Nazi violence because they are fighting Nazis. As Ranger noted above, and I have noted on numerous occasions, that is not entirely true. I have said that the only high ground that Antifa holds over the white supremacists is the fact that they hate people for differences that are not immutable. I say when getting your head bashed in by a bike lock for being a white conservative or for being a black guy caught by a bunch of Klansmen, the ideology is important but it is secondary to the physical violence being aimed at you. So we are a little more okay with beating and attempting to murder people over politics than we are with doing it over race. But is that difference so big that it is worth all of this back and forth? I believe, based on the conversations here, the conservatives would say no, they all suck and the liberals would say yes, because racism is more horrible.

Same with Jeong. Conservative position, racism horrible, treat her like white people would be treated in that position. Liberal response, we have changed the definition of racism so that racism is bad, but white racism is the worst. We will then attack anyone who wants to treat people equally now because people were treated unequally in the past and our efforts to be more equal today are not 100% perfect.

Quite frankly, many on the right are probably aghast (pissed) that someone holding your position would dare to question their morality given they feel you have been brushing off bad behavior by people viewed as "left" because of your own whataboutisms. "Yeah, Jeong should not have said that but what about white racism?" "Yeah, Antifa should not violently attack people, but what about Charlottesville". My entire first post was a response to you in that you are completely blind to some of your own shortcomings while feeling completely comfortable moralizing to others.
So, basically, you admit to drawing these moral equivalencies, and don't see what's wrong with that. Well, at least that's responsive to the topic.

I should have put Duke and Jeong together, rhetorically that would make more sense. I was not an English major in college, so forgive my lack of construction at times. But, while disjointed, my point stands.

Why would you put David Duke and Jeong together, and in what warped universe does that make any sense? Duke is a lifelong member of an avowed HATE GROUP. No one badgered him into joining the KKK. He was a high official in a group that demonizes people based on nothing more than their skin color, or with regards to Jews, on their religion/culture. Some early biographical details on Duke...

Duke was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, to David Hedger Duke Sr. and Alice Maxine Crick. As the son of an engineer for Shell Oil Company, Duke frequently moved with his family around the world. They lived a short time in the Netherlands before settling in Louisiana. In the late 1960s, Duke met William Luther Pierce, the leader of the white nationalist and antisemitic National Alliance, who would remain a lifelong influence on him. Duke joined the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) in 1967.

In 1968, Duke enrolled at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge, and in 1970, he formed a white student group called the White Youth Alliance that was affiliated with the National Socialist White People's Party. The same year, to protest lawyer William Kunstler's appearance at Tulane University in New Orleans, Duke appeared at a demonstration in Nazi uniform. Picketing and holding parties on the anniversary of Hitler's birth, he became notorious on the LSU campus for wearing a Nazi uniform."

He joined the Klan at 17, and a year later he was a student at LSU advocating WHITE SUPREMACIST views. No evidence (or even claim) that he became a racist because he was abused by minorities. He just met a kindred spirit in his teen years, and adopted a racist lifestyle.
He even went a step further and founded his own version of a Klan spinoff...

"Duke graduated from LSU in 1974. Shortly after graduation, Duke founded the Knights of the Ku Klux Klan (KKKK)."

And early biography of Sarah Jeong...

Jeong was born in South Korea in 1988,[1] and moved to New York with her parents when she was three years old.[2] Her parents were students at the time and Jeong immigrated as their dependent; she later received a green card while attending college, and became a US citizen in 2017.[2]

Jeong attended the University of California, Berkeley and Harvard Law School, where she was editor of the Harvard Journal of Law & Gender.[1]

Career
Jeong writes on law, technology and internet culture.[3][4] She is a senior writer for The Verge and previously served as a contributing editor for Vice's Motherboard section, as well as writing articles for Forbes, the The Guardian, and The New York Times.[5][6][7]

Jeong and Electronic Frontier Foundation activist Parker Higgins published an email newsletter called "5 Useful Articles" about copyright law and the internet[8][9][10] from 2014[11] to 2015.[12]

In 2015, she covered the Silk Road trial for Forbes.[13][14] In the fall of 2015, she was invited to Yale University under a Poynter Fellowship in Journalism.[6][15]

Also in 2015, she published a book, The Internet of Garbage, on online harassment and responses to it by media and online platforms.[16] The book discusses active moderation and community management strategies to improve online interactions.[17]

In 2017, Forbes named Jeong in its "30 Under 30" media list.[18]

In August 2018, Jeong was hired by The New York Times to join its editorial board as lead writer on technology, commencing in September.[19] The hiring sparked a strongly negative reaction in conservative media and social media, which highlighted derogatory tweets about white people that Jeong had posted mostly in 2013 and 2014.[20][21] Critics characterized her tweets as being racist; Jeong said that the posts were "counter-trolling" in reaction to harassment she had experienced, and that she regretted adopting this tactic.[20] The Times stated that it had reviewed her social media history before hiring her, and that it did not condone the posts"

I used the wiki page for both Duke and Jeong, and apologize for not removing the reference cites from her page. Notice how Duke's biography revolves around a life of promoting racism and white supremacy, which he unapologetically still advocates to this day. He's ran for (and even won) political office as an avowed racist.

Now note how Jeong's life has revolved around being an author and academic, with a minor footnote over 10 or so retaliatory tweets she made over the course of a couple years. No marching around in "Korean Klan" garb joining hate groups, rallies railing against "white devils", or speeches advocating "Korean Supremacy". I took a gander at her twitter feed from the days before she was even suggested for a position at the times. Not even extremely political, and certainly not racist. Feminist and gay friendly, but not racist... Actually a lot of techie stuff, some of it way beyond my pay grade. Probably why I had never heard of her before the right wing uproar...

And seriously, why do folks on the Right,(who hate The NYT) even care? I don't care (or even know) who the players at sites like Breitbart and infowars are, at least not at the level Jeong will fill at The NYT. I hadn't heard of Bannon prior to Trump hiring him to be a part of a political campaign. And then a freaking Chief of Staff at the WH. Now THAT is bizarre!!

Breitbart hires David Duke- Why should I CARE? It's exactly the type of personnel I associate with Breitbart, or Infowars, or Free Republic.Racist sites hire racists- no surprise or cause for outrage. But I'm supposed to believe right wing wackos really CARE that Jeong has been hired to write about technology at the NYT? Or that they really do not compehend the difference between avowed racists and someone who responded in kind to racist taunts directed at her, while she continues to support people of all races in her daily tweets and other social media? Talk about faux outrage...

Does anyone know what part of South Korea Jeong came from? I’m guessing South West. I think it matters and might shed a light on what her feelings are truly about.

As someone not up on Korean geography, could you flesh that point out a bit?

I didn’t want to skew responses.... Chonnam University is located in Kwangju which is in the southwest part of the Peninsula. In 1980 an uprising/protest was put down by the military. The protesters were a combination of citizens and students. 500-600 were killed when fired on by troops. A US military advisor was present (he was observing and had no authority) but was blamed by the locals that the US was in charge. Most of the anti American fervor in the country comes from this part of the country. It is so strong in this are Americans generally don’t travel in that area.

But it goes deeper than this. There had been decades of uprising in this area. Most of it is recognized as anti capitalist. Look up the 1960 riots there which actually lead to the Rhee resignation (CIA had to fly him out) where he went Hawaii in exile. There were three I believe types of revolutions like this over a 20 year period that changed the direction of the country.

My point is, if she came from this area, the view of the white guy is not good. Wether correct or not, her views could be severely affected by these teachings and what she may have observed in the area and blames the US/white devil as the culprit. May be a product of her environment. I think it would be interesting to know if her family is from this area.

Interesting review of 1960 Rhee riots....https://adst.org/2013/04/the-fall-of-south-korean-strongman-syngman-rhee-april-26-1960/

Anything that hastened Rhee's departure was good. Rhee had innumerable problems and was very much hated by many, including our own military command.

We made a lot of mistakes in Korea that could have doomed us had North Korea not come into the South like Germany into Ukraine. Backing Rhee was one. Even bigger, we left in charge Japanese and Japanese collaborators. It left a bad taste in a lot of mouths that we often left in place the same police chief or governor that had been torturing and arresting for Japan. While Rhee was not involved in that for Japan, he had no problem ordering the same for him. It wasn't until the 90s that South Korea moved to free, democratic government.

That's nonsense. I've traveled all over Korea. Even in that area. There are no places in South Korea where there is strong "anti-American fervor", at least not while Obama was still in office. You're full of crap.
You really don’t know what you speak of but it hasn’t stopped you before. Ignorant.

https://adst.org/2015/05/the-1980-kwangju-massacre-and-the-surge-in-anti-americanism-in-south-korea/

I would not completely avoid the area but I would be aware of what/where I am if traveling. Kidnaps have happened. Beatings. Disappearances. I would be cautious....a friendly unsolicited piece of advice. If a protest happens while there, take cover and hide. You will be sought out.

"This is patently absurd, and it speaks to a moral bankruptcy among the posters making these false equivalencies. The leftist protester in the mask who sucker punched Richard Spencer committed a battery. It was wrong, both legally and morally. But it wasn't nearly as wrong as the white supremacist who deliberately drove his car into a crowd of protesters, killing one of them"

This is where the left always goes wrong and it's unfortunate.

They see the driver in Charlottesville as the extreme right and an antifa protester as the extreme left.

If that driver loses his key's in Charlottesville and James Hodgkinson's shot is 3 inches farther up, then the R's should theoretically have the upper hand.

After all, we're the one's just lighting tiki torches and marching and you are the one's gunning down our congressmen.

Jesus. Goat is the least self-aware person I've ever met.

The left prescribes the right's crazies as a large percentage of the total voting base. We prescribe the left's crazies as simply crazies regardless of political affiliation.

We should wait until a right winger is killed by the extreme lefty to call the scenario even.

It's funny. The left takes a similar attitude in regards to Israel. Because not enough Israeli's died while defending their border in relation to Palestinians, they must have been in the wrong. As soon as more Israeli's die, we'll know the sides are morally equal.
I think we've reached a point in time where "conservative" is more an identity than an ideology.
While there’s very little in here that I disagree with, it confirms Goat’s hypothesis that the #NewGOP views conservativism and liberalism as identities now and not as policy-informed viewpoints.
I outlined in my OP, but at least it doesn't ruin an already good thread.
Meanwhile, I'm still waiting for this thread to bear any sort of fruit, beyond Ranger's initial reply.

At least I tried.

Combinded response to the the random pulled posts above.

First of all, the OP is typical goat:

  • Define the conservative position in a manner that allows easy and mindless criticism;
  • Toss in "Nazi" (also sometimes "racist" or "hate) for purposes of further labeling individual conservatives;
  • With the table so set, claim the moral high ground.
This style of argument is becoming more and more frequent and I don't know why anybody takes it seriously.

Predictably, Ranger, Weide and others fall in line by arguing that Trump or others are conservatives, and in the case of Ranger, claim to be a "real" conservative and the others are not.

Then we throw in the comments that conservatives have become an "identity" and not an ideology, and we complete the circle of marginalizing conservatives. From where I sit, the ONLY people who claim conservative has become an identity are those who either are not conservative, or claim some separation from non-conservatives. When a conservative talks about conservatism, the post is usually about ideas, not about identities. When a liberal talks about conservatives, the conversation is always about identity. in this thread, for example, we have posts claiming or implying that Trump and David Duke are conservatives. Liberals love identity labels and they use them . . . .well . . . . liberally. Thus we see "Progressive" used as label for liberal instead of an accurate reflection of progressive ideas.

As I said often, I think Trump is the least ideological president since H.W. Bush, and then several before him back to Nixon. But that shouldn't be taken to mean that Trump hasn't taken some actions that conservatives ought to agree with. The problem is that such agreement is not possible because of the overwhelming hate and resistance to all things Trump.

I've been to over 70 countries. I don't think I need YOUR silly, non-factual, travel advice.

You really don’t know what you speak of but it hasn’t stopped you before. Ignorant.

I would not completely avoid the area but I would be aware of what/where I am if traveling. Kidnaps have happened. Beatings. Disappearances. I would be cautious....a friendly unsolicited piece of advice. If a protest happens while there, take cover and hide. You will be sought out.

You can’t point to one post in here that I’ve made that shows I’m a traditional liberal. You have no idea what true conservatism or classical liberalism is. Mostly because you’re a terrible poster.

If this is true, Trump has taken several actions that you should wholeheartedly support. I haven't noticed any posts like that from you. Have I missed those? I have made such posts and have taken much incoming from Democrats and various anti-Trumpers. You should join me in the barrel, it's lots of fun.

I am curious, you say Trump is not ideological yet I am not sure I have seen a policy that those on the populist right disagree with. Is that just by random chance, or have I missed some?

I'm not sure about what you mean by "populist right." I think his DACA proposal has a lot of disagreement among the GOP's immigration hard liners. (I don't understand why the Dems didn't negotiate that point; . . . . . .eh . . . . .yes I do. Resist!) While not mentioned much, I am not crazy about his caving on taxing carried interest for the hedge fund managers. I think many rural red areas have problems with trade actions. His staff (mainly Ivanka) is out there with more employment costs and expanded family leave. I could go on, but that's just off the top of my head.

Yeah, well, my mother in law was born and raised in South Korea and was brought back to the US by a US Soldier from where he was stationed in Korea during the Vietnam War. As a family, we have traveled all over South Korea. From the Seoul, to the DMZ...and traveled all over South Korea. I don't care what you link. It's not what's going on on the ground there. You're full of crap.

Your stupid link is about an event that happened almost 40 years ago. When was the last time you were in South Korea? Have you EVER been in South Korea?

You have no idea what you're talking about, so just shut up.

I don’t know why all the hostility but whatever. Korea is my favorite foreign country to visit. The Korean people have a loving admiration and tie to the US and I enjoy it. That part of the country has a dark history that runs counter to the government in Seoul. It just does and it lies just under the surface.

I can’t/won’t go into a “why” I believe these things because mainly I can’t. Do with it what you choose. But you bare the responsibility now because you have been informed. I was you the best in your travels.

I don't really care about your "why"s. You're full of it and you don't know what you're talking about. The hostility is because you're spreading nonsense information about something that doesn't exist. Again...I think I have a pretty good handle on it, given the fact that HALF of my wife's family was from there and I've traveled extensively in South Korea.

You're just a bozo.

Excerpt from article....

“In an Asan Institute poll from 2014, 93.3 percent of South Koreans polled said the alliance was necessary, and 66 percent percent were in favor of retaining the alliance even if Korea unifies. However, ROK opinion of the United States is mercurial: In a 2002 survey, 44 percent of South Koreans had a negative view of the United States, a number higher than any other Western or Asian country. Much of this anti-Americanism is rooted in the U.S. military’s role in South Korea. There are historical reasons for this anti-Americanism, including misperceptions surrounding the U.S. military’s role in the Kwangju massacre in 1980. There have also been several recent sensational instances where individual U.S. soldiers have killed or harmed South Korean civilians, provoking anger and questions about the Status of Forces Agreement that permits the United States to try American perpetrators in U.S. military courts.”

I compared the two in that I think they both hold bigoted views based on things they have said or done. Nothing more, nothing less.
Except that one actually holds bigoted views based on the things they have said or done and one doesn't. It is a perfect example Goat's point. This New Yorker article makes a similar point.
Jeong’s comments can also be seen as expressions—if flawed ones—of the frustration common to people who deal with chronic unfairness. People in these communities might well voice such sentiments in their homes, or among associates who share a common burden, but wisely avoid doing so on social media. Her comments were reckless, inflammatory, potentially hurtful. But all things are not equal. White men in this country have been, largely if not universally, exempt from the default demand that we look askance at their claims to humanity. Filter past the hypertensive indignation and a thing becomes clear: the idea of reverse racism serves as a blunt instrument to facilitate the actual kind.

Really? That really doesn’t mean much. My wife is full Korean. Her entire family lives there. We visit regularly. I met and married her while living there. We married without our governments consent. The fact we married, required our government to cut my time short in Korea and send us back to the States. The reason? Fear for her family becoming victims of blackmail or being used as blackmail.

I know what I know and when it comes to that part of world.....it is more than many.

Directionally I agree with his stance on immigration. He goes too far obviously, but that’s to his buffoon nature.

I agree with corporate tax reform, but he’s not lowering spending at all to offset and I’m verrrry skeptical that the growth coming from such is enough to offset the planned reductions in rates.

His bluster, his sycophantic following, and his overall inability to motivate himself to understand complex situations leaves me severely disliking him. He’s not a conservative but he has made some moves with which I agree. But isn’t that true of any political stance and any president?

It might be delicious, but I can’t even bring myself to try kimchi. It smells like garbage.

Just when I almost give you the benefit of the doubt, you poop in your hand and throw it against the wall. Where did I call trump a conservative? I’m talking in this thread about how expressly NOT conservative the #NewGOP is and how it’s destroyed the GOP. You butthurt boomers cannot get over the sins of Obama supporters and being called on the bullshit that’s been lurking in the GOP since the tea party emerged.

And predictably (to use your word) you suckle at the teat of the #NewGOP and have no idea what it means to be a conservative / classic liberal.

I really have no clue about what the "NewGOP" is. You seem to be saying that the GOP is moving towards Trump and that is the NewGOP. I also read you to at least imply that conservatives are doing likewise. In fact you clearly imply such as you say "I suckle at the teat of the NewGOP". I stand by my long-held beliefs about conservative approach to issues. Those haven't changed beyond normal evolution. When I find agreement with Trump I say so. When I don't, I've said that too. I see bight lines between these matters and his often abhorrent behavior--including his unrestrained tweets and other comments. That is a bright line you can't or won't see, thus your meaningless comment about the "NewGOP." As I've explained several times, Trump is the most un-GOP GOP president in my lifetime. That goes from his perspective and the perspective of GOP congressional leaders, governors and other party suits.

Trump has attracted those who haven't voted, who have voted traditional Democratic, and most of the GOP. I don't see a "NewGOP" here. I see a temporary coalition centered on Trump. Frankly I think you made up "NewGOP" for Trump bashing purposes.

I wish I had a dime for every time you said I don't understand your point. You are pretty transparent, Even though you might change subject matter, your point always comes out the same, conservatives are morally deficient, anti-science, racist, misogynist, and bigoted. Lately, the only reasonable conservatives to you are those who bash Trump to the degree you find acceptable. Pre-Trump, I don't think there was any way for you to see a conservative as reasonable.

And scorns people for “liking” others posts. I feel sorry for him to a point. Very typical far left mentality.... I’m not sure I’ve met someone so abundantly certain they are the intellectually superior person..... talk about worthless as teats on a bull...

Then frankly you don’t have a good memory. I’ve been discussing #NewGOP before trump ran for president. He’s a symptom. Your fueling his delusional approach to ruling and electing a know-nothing amateur is the problem. I said good day.

You are right. I don’t recall the that. I think it would be worth a discussion of what you think is the #NewGOP and what elected officials are part of it. As a starter, I would agree that some elements in the GOP have become more strident and unwilling to compromise. I don’t even put Trump in that category, but there are many who are, such as the Freedom Caucus. I don’t agree with many of their positions and none of their tactics. They by no means represent anything you might call the #NewGOP.

I think you should defend your remark that I am fueling the #NewGOP—whatever it is. I think you are full of crap on that score, but I’m willing to discuss that charge.

There's no way for any reasonable person to read my post and thing that's my point. You're assigning to me what you assume a liberal caricature would say.

The #NewGOP had its first heartbeat when they selected Palin to be McCain’s running mate. At that point, many of us were quite confused as to how such an unprofessional, unprepared, and unelectable candidate could be selected alongside a very electable candidate in McCain. Many of us shrugged, but still gave the GOP the benefit of the doubt.

But then the Tea Party came. Then the guys who wanted to lower taxes without reducing spending came. Then the evangelicals came. Then guys like Inhofe hold up snowballs on the floor and nobody bats an eyelash. At that point, the GOP became a post policy party.

The Cruz’s, the ousting of an honorable servant Boehner, the shouts of “Liar!” and the other ODS symptoms persisted and grew like a virus. Amateurs and populists took over and, with the help of right wing media, have turned my former party into a bunch of drooling, Obama-hating, know-nothing tough guys that still have no idea what they’re doing. This new tax bill will not increase growth to the point where missing revenues are replaced or exceeded. This isn’t the party of fiscal responsibility anymore. This isn’t a world-leading party anymore. This is a big tent party that just wants votes and hasn’t lost its rudder. They became the Democrats.

If you voted for this amateur charlatanism, you are part of the problem. Guys like @Aloha Hoosier did the right thing in abstaining. You willfully pulled the lever for a huckster and gave this populist and know-nothing curve a peak.

an interesting and related article by David Frum on the decline of the American conservative and Dinesh D'Souza.
It’s stunning to those of us who came of age during the last phase of the Cold War to watch fellow members of our political generation enthuse over the Russian dictator, Vladimir Putin. Yet in 2015, D’Souza retweeted a beefcake image of a bare-chested Putin over the caption, “REAL MAN CONTEST: Putin rides bareback, while Obama fishes with gloves.” A year later, D’Souza added: “What @realDonaldTrump admires about Putin is the way Putin—unlike someone else we know—LOVES his country & FIGHTS for its interests.”

In this crisis, old arguments fade before new, old ideological categories look obsolete, and old comrades look like avowed enemies of one’s most dearly cherished institutions and values. And one is left to wonder: Did they really change so much? Or did I?

They became the Democrats.

Yeah, whatever.

You can say the GOP lost their way on that topic and maybe many other conservative ones but you cannot reasonably claim that the Democrats became anything like say, Ronald Reagan. If anything, Trump is the GOP moving closer to the Democrats, not the other way around.
