Thursday morning, we traveled over to Charleston, Missouri to purchase fireworks. I was excited for a neat but short road trip. It was about 70 miles from my house here in Kentucky.

Our trip took us through Wickliffe, Ky and Cairo, Illinois. Both of these towns are small river towns with Wickliffe on the Mississippi River and Cairo at the confluence of the Mississippi River and Ohio River. I was floored at the dilapidated conditions of Cairo, Illinois!!!

The history of the town suggests a once bustling community that is strategically positioned at the confluence of two historic rivers. In the 1960s Cairo experienced large riots and violence. A black man interviewed on one of the youtube videos stated they "won the battle but lost the war" referring to the current poverty and economic depression of the city.

It occurred to me after watching at least a dozen videos on that region, that as a white person I really have no clue what they've been through. The black community has traveled some roads filled with poverty, restrictions, racism and violence.

Where I differ with democrats is in the approach to better black lives. The democrat approach of give, give, give and putting them in public housing has been a disaster for black people. The black community needs to seek a different approach, one that gives them a future outside of the poverty and public housing they find themselves in...This means choosing to learn trades, skilled training, and education.

These little towns are a microcosm of what happens when voting for generations of democrats. The ceiling is low, certainly not high and you'll forever be dependent on the government hand out...Trump 2020!! A vote for the democrats is a vote for socialism!!

How so?

Also, please inform us as to your opinion on what has caused most of the problems in Cairo over the last 100 + years.
TIA

P.S. You do realize that most of the poorest states are Red states, right?

Voting for generations of democrats has left them with no education, no future and living in squalor. The Democrat platform dies IF people get educated and pursue a career that doesn't require them to live off the government/Democrat cheese...

One thing, if you want out of poverty you have to go to work! Businesses were begging for help, so why didn’t you see blacks apply?

So, no response to the poverty stricken red states?

This post is about a town in Illinois, and if I'm not mistaken, Illinois is typically a pretty blue state....I think the poverty-stricken areas occur in red and blue states. That's not what my post was about, you are steering into another direction.

So There are not poor Black areas of Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, Alabama, South Carolina? What brilliant solutions have Republicans had except to deny racism exists? If Democats are to blame, surely these Republican states have totally solved the problem, so please share how they did it.

Embracing the democratic platform has gotten them absolutely no where. Embrace the ideas of hard work, getting a skilled trade, entrepreneurial ideas, owning your own business, etc...Many of those ideas are very much Republican themes...

They've ALWAYS voted Democrat...that obviously IS NOT WORKING, Marvin...

Un-hunh . . . .

You don't go through Cairo to get to Charleston, Missouri after crossing the bridge from Wickliffe over the Ohio. You turn left on US 60/62, cross the bridge across the Mississippi and go through Wilson City/Wyatt on your way to Charleston.

Cairo is 2 miles the other direction from where you would turn left . . . .

td75, was thinking about the heat and humidity in Cairo on a day like today as I read about your trip.

The last time I was there was one of the most uncomfortable times in my life due to the heat and humidity.

I did go through Cairo...We were on the way back from Charleston, Missouri and took a wrong turn which is why we ended up in the heart of Cairo. That was sort of part of the plan anyway, we like to see places we've never been.

Yup, you're spot on, hoot. It's about as hot and humid as you can get . . .

. . . located at the confluence between the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, plus it's at a lower elevation than the rivers, too . . . worse than St. Louis, and that's saying something . . . .

Well, that was dumb.

Did you go across the Mississippi on the interstate bridge? If so, that was dumb too . . . it's adds about twice the distance to get to Charleston, plus you risk going the slightest amount over the speed limit and getting a speeding ticket . . .

Lemme guess . . . you went to Reeves' Boomland for the fireworks . . . no shame in that I guess, Ol' man Reeves has been taking money from out-of-towners for decades.

is cairo across from cape? great river road?

is that across from cape?
Nope, it's across from Charleston (about 13 miles). Very tip of Illinois . . . where the Ohio flows into the Mississippi. About 33 miles south of Cape (driving on the Illinois side), 28 miles east of Sikeston, MO.

East Cape Girardeau is on the Illinois side where Cape is on the MO side. There ain't nothing much there except strip clubs.

. Most of SOUTHERN ILLINOIS including Alexander Co, where Cairo is located has been voting GOP for decades. Here is the map of Illinois from the 2016 election- Blue is Clinton...

800px-Illinois_Presidential_Election_Results_2016.svg.png

Cairo, which is part of the light RED county at the far southwest tip of Illinois above has an extremely racist past which has resulted in a bitter divide and urban blight. But anyone who says Cairo is a failure of Dems is not being honest. Northern Illinois where the people live is heavily Democratic, but some of the more conservative politicians in the midwest come from areas like Central/Southern Illinois...

Cairo is part of Illinois-12 which from 1973-1993 was represented by Phil Crane. It has seen a mix of Dem and GOP reps since then, but since 2015 it has been represented by GOP Mike Bost. Cairo itself had a history of racist mayors which led to racial tensions and rioting, along with economic depression and a population that basically left. But this whole premise of blaming this on "decades of voting for Democrats" is patently untrue and uninformed...

Yeah, but sometimes it's fun to watch a dumbass get thoroughly spanked by facts.
I get that but 4 years plus and not one of them have learned a damn thing. Every obvious lie or alternative fact pointed out as a lie or bullshit, is soon forgotten (by them) and it's on to being fixated on the next lie. This one obviously believes the Democratic mayor/government bullshit that Trump was spewing a month ago. Waste of energy for low return. I much prefer the ridicule and/or ignore method.

While you attempt to deflect for your Socialist Party, the fact REMAINS, the democrats have tightly clung to the black vote. The black vote has always gone democrat, and it absolutely has not helped them across this great country.

What happened in Cairo is called white flight...learn about it!! The black community has really struggled ever since...It's because they lack certain skills, education chiefly, to create prosperity...And again, the democrats Do Not want them to be prosperous because it would kill their platforms.

Another fun fact, with regards to this post about an issue you know remarkably little about. That part of Illinois (known as "little Egypt)
which of course includes Cairo, was a hotbed of pro-Confederacy/pro-Slavery sentiment, before during and after the Civil War. It's likely one of the few parts of Illinois that in 1860 voted for pro-Slavery Southern Democrat candidate John Breckinridge (KY) over either of Illinois native sons Lincoln (Repub) or Douglas (D).

How am I deflecting? How is voting for Democrat candidates who DO NOT get elected going to help or hurt Dem voters? People who LOSE elections are not the ones in charge of MAKING POLICIES. The "white flight" in Cairo was mainly a result of economic conditions, as well as racial unrest.

But the racial unrest was a result of racist policies enacted by racist officials. Again, Cairo was a very racist enclave, dating back to the local pro-Confederate sentiment in 1860-and beyond. Cairo in actuality was basically a part of Missouri, and just as Missouri was pro-slavery and joined the CSA people in Cairo felt the same way. Not sure how you think Blacks asking for an equal share of the pie and racist whites leaving, as a result, is somehow the fault of the people who were discriminated against for over a hundred years...

Again GOP Conservative Phil Crane represented the District from 1973-1993. What exactly did he do for the Black constituents?

Whites didn't flee from Cairo. Whites left because the town was dying, in part because of their own poor business decisions (going back to the early 1900s) and racist hardheadedness . . . and then it was dead because the poor business decisions and racist practices couldn't be undone.

Here ya go . . . a far more accurate history of what happened in Cairo than you'll ever be able to piece together: https://www.legendsofamerica.com/il-cairo/2/

BTW, when you drove through Cairo, did you see the houses on Commercial Avenue with trees growing out of them?

I’ve got an idea. Why don’t you go on a lecture tour around the country and let the black community know what is best for them? And obviously what you think is best for them is having a racist in office, so don’t forget to add that info. I’m sure it will go well.

You live in Kentucky and are complaining about the condition of a town in Illinois? Have you paid any attention to the number of towns in Kentucky that should be remodeled with a bulldozer that are populated by trashy white folks who wouldn't vote for a black guy or a damn woman.

Trump's moronic speech in South Dakota last night sounded as if either Candace Owens or Steven Miller wrote it. She's the idiot that tried to claim that "fascism" is a leftist concept, based on her nonsensical attempts to claim Hitler was a "socialist".

For an Ivy League school, Dartmouth sure has some idiots who have graduated from there. It's like "facts don't matter" Poly Sci dept with proponents like Owens, Laura Ingraham, and the ultimate bozo clown Dinesh D'Souza. It's no wonder Trump is a walking talking advertisement for "History For Dummies", since he listens to people who have apparently decided to revise history and proudly advocate the doctrine of "facts don't matter, we determine our own facts"...
