That sort of makes sense with the timing of Woodson's "retirement" announcement. Dolson wanted to make a change this spring, has had that deal pretty much buttoned up, and wanted to cut off the possiblilty of a late-season run giving Woodson an argument for another year.

I went on a charter deal with my boss a few yrs back around the islands /backwaters near St Pete, and had a 30" snook on....felt like a 30 lbs fish, the force it applied was. startling. Screaming drag, I did all I could just to hold on.
Domestic violence, understandably, hits people differently. Doesn't matter why or how, it just does. Its one of the reasons why I'll be surprised if he's the choice. Of any "issue" someone could have, that's one of the most difficult ones for all parties involved to move past.
The other main reason, that's tied to the initial one I mentioned, is it cuts Beard's margin for errors and mistakes down to basically nothing. He'd be starting his tenure at IU, basically, with a zero tolerance policy hanging over him. So...while a coach with a "clean" slate can absorb certain controversies, issues, transgressions, and move past them. Beard will never be able to do that.
For me, its MUCH less about the morality questions...but that's just me, DV hasn't been a big part of my personal story. But I do still have PTSD from the Sampson dumpster fire. And of all the coaches being opined about, Beard has the highest likelihood of burning the house down again. I'm wary of that.
From what I understand, you can hunt alligators at designated times but not with firearms.
Just think, as concerned as you are, how concerned Scott Dolson would be, since his job would be on the line. All I've ever said is if you bow to the pressure and rule him out without doing background checks on him, you're not doing your job. But, if he hires him, I'm confident he'll have done the necessary vetting and talked with Beard to be sure he's convinced there would be nothing similar that would derail him. If he does that, I don't think you have any more to worry about with CB than anyone else. I've also always said, don't hone in on one candidate and talk to several so if he also does that and determines Otz or McCasland or whoever is a better candidate, I'm happy for that.

I believe us Hoosiers need to come to terms with the fact that this is now a business. Back in the 80's, 90's and, even 00's it was still collegiate athletics. If we want a good product on the court, then beard is the answer. He has proven at 3 power 4 conference teams he can do a fantastic job. This is an absolute no brainer. It's a home run hire right in front of us.
I agree I think he'd do well here. It's that pesky baggage that keeps getting in the way.
Beard is a winner who would do well at IU ... and, imo, he'd be a good coaching fit. I don't think anyone can argue otherwise. However, even if the DV incident never occurred, maybe Dolson has someone better in mind (or already in the bag). Again, CB is a solid coach, but so are others; it's not like he's the only one high up on the coaching ladder.
What you haven't acknowledged yet...
Assume it goes how you said...he vetted...Whitten was involved, and gave a thumbs up... they're both confident the incident wasn't as it was originally portrayed, he's not likely to do it again, etc... So they hire him.
He comes to IU, has success, wins big for a few years. Then he's out at a restaurant in Indy, maybe in the offseason even...and some drunk husband and wife bring up the DV issue, gets in his face, harasses Beard and the people with him. Beard sticks up for himself, gets in to a fight with the guy, police are called, etc...
My contention is Beard could easily get "cancelled", and IU would be forced to fire him, in that situation. Where as...if they hired McCasland, McCollum, May, Drew, Otz... that incident probably just goes away. And well, actually is much less likely to ever happen in the first place.
So he's fired, we lose 3/4 of our players, we're not planning for a coaching search, we have to name one of his assistants...Deja Frickin Vu...
Is he worth that risk?
If Dolson does all the leg work, comes to the conclusion that he's the guy...I'll cheer like crazy for him. Both personally and professionally. But again...I'm wary about hiring him because of the increased potential for how it could end.
Iowa State HC T. J. Otzelberger would seem to be an outstanding choice to pursue…say $4m+, 7yrs…doesn’t seem to have any off court issues, could be a long term coach, Google him, he wins.
Can't go bargain hunting so, you're not paying him less than Woodson was earning when you know he's way better and has the results to prove it. I think it would take 6mil/6yrs to get TJO, minimum, and I think he'd be very interested at that range.

Hell I've been on golf courses in SW FL that had gators so big, sitting on the edge of a fairway, that made me wish I was carrying. Any ball that gets within 30 feet is a free drop on the other side of the fairway. No penalty stroke. No grief, no questions asked.
You're thinking way to hard about this. You and I are just never going to agree on what's right regarding Beard. No, in the scenario you said, I don't think you'd have to worry if someone else was drunk and were to bring it up in a restaurant and get in Beard's face (keep in mind I've said I'd not hire Beard if he's still drinking, and that played a role in the DV night w his GF). But I do agree that there are a bunch of fans who will never forgive or accept Beard, so I accepted awhile ago it wouldn't be him and dropped him, until Kurt's post said it was Beard. I do now hope it is Beard, because as I've said, I'm confident Dolson will have gone over his background with a fine toothed comb.

Unruly fans could just as easily harass TJ Otzelberger at Applebee’s, mocking his tiny polo shirts and 29-30 record at UNLV, leading to a confrontation. But this isn’t baseball, you don’t get a couple of strikes before being canceled. Every situation is judged on its own merits.
In fact, the opposite argument is just as plausible: given Beard’s past, he may be hyper-aware of avoiding negative encounters, knowing the scrutiny he’s under. If IU does its due diligence and determines he’s the best hire, the focus should be on what he brings to the program, not on hypotheticals that could happen to any coach under the wrong circumstances.
I'll be honest here, that article is a far cry from painting Beard as an alcoholic.

And then of course, ignore the video of him hammered and the guy who said Pat Knight had to bail him out. And don’t forget how many wounds Beard had. And don’t forget he had a recording, but chose not to show it. And don’t forget he didn’t fight his firing and walked away from 5 million. Sorry you’re unable to put two and two together. I can.
More important he doesn't have the offensive chops to win NCAA championships.
