Shoe Guys vs. Program Guys

Based on Archie Miller's reported offers to 2020 prospects, it seems as if he's making a calculated effort to stay away from the so-called "shoe guys" and, instead, focus his efforts on "program guys" who will contribute to establishing the culture he desires.

IU hasn't offered any of Rivals' 5-star prospects. The highest-rated player holding an IU offer is Nimari Burnett, a 4-star shooting guard rated 25th nationally that the Hoosiers don't appear to be seriously pursuing at this juncture.

It's a refreshing approach, and one in which we avoid all the bull**** that comes along with recruiting shoe guys who use college programs as one-year pit stops on the way to the NBA.
I prefer all of our guys wear shoes.

For one who so often loves to talk about "statistics" you seem to have none of them yourself, nor even much of an understanding of them. Here are some stats from the links above by @All4You . They're just counting so I thought you might be able to do that yourself but I guess not.

Draft Number of freshmen drafted
2018 17
2017 18
2016 15

All of those are significantly higher than the "5 or so players per year max" you claim. Once again, you're not only wrong but also completely FOS by just making up numbers.
Are you really this incompetent? I mean seriously.

The OAD rules affects HS players, not college freshmen. It would only affect the people who NEVER go to college. Plenty of kids are ready after a year in college with a good developmental program. Very few are ready right out of HS. That’s why very few went out of HS when it was allowed. Get a clue man.

Are you really this stupid? (Spoiler: Yes. Yes, you are.) Many of those HS seniors became college freshmen because of the rule. Sure, some of the freshmen that got drafted had breakout freshmen seasons but most would've gone pro right out of HS of if they had been allowed. You're an idiot if you truly believe that only 1/3 of the 48 players that got drafted in those three years at the earliest allowed time would have angered the draft right out of HS. You have it backwards, it would likely have been at least 2/3 of them going straight to the pros with 1/3 going to college for a year.

Even back in 2004 before the rule was implemented, 8 HS seniors were drafted. Since that time, NBA teams have become more and more willing to draft young players. Out affects way more than 5 players per year, you're just too daft to see that or admit it.

I’ve been extremely critical of Archie, but I’m going to assume he isn’t a dumba##. If he thought he had a good chance with more 5 stars he would offer them. He needs to recruit both 5 star players and 3 or 4 year players.

I like this strategy, it can work.
And it may very well be IU's only course.
The one draw back I see, and this is just opinion, with the nature of college basketball today, is that those top 30 players out of high school, the ones who get all the media attention, also tend to get favorable treatment from the zebras.

No, it more like the choice between hitting on a insanely hot girl you think is probably an escort, and will drop you once you stop paying her...or a really pretty girl who you know likes you for you, and may turn out to be the one.

(Sorry about the analogy that is totally foreign to you...it was more for the rest of the board.)

I think you can go either route and be successful (OAD or 40-125 ranked guys that stay in your program). But you have to do either route well and be consistent with it. Plenty of examples of both ways being successful in the modern era.

So again, 3 out of 8 had 5-star players. And this year that number was abnormally low.

Then you consider probably 5% of D1 teams have a 5 star but nearly 40% of Elite 8 teams were from that 5% category. Do you need me to explain this further?
I think everyone likes Five Stars. Especially if they are difference makers as Freshman or two-year players. You can build nice teams around them. There is only two maybe three teams that can reload with multiple five stars, every year.

You would think so. But incredibly there are some on here who think we’d be better off never getting another 5 star.

There is a whole thread about wanting lower guys than 5 stars...
