This was the year and they fell short. Weaknesses exposed by a superior team. Never say never, but I do not think they will ever field a better team than the one they had this season. Edey was a monster and happy to see him moving on. Almost feel bad for Purdue. I found myself quietly cheering for them and then enjoying the second half beat down UCONN gave them. Tip of the hat to UCONN. They were clearly the best team. At least Purdue is guaranteed a national championship each season when they play IU. That’s as good as it gets for them.

I fully believe this was their best chance. Can’t imagine a better set up ever. UConn was just too tough.

I looked at the stats and noticed bench scoring. Purdue's bench combined for 2 points. Then I saw UCONN's bench scoring. 13. Edey had more than half their total points. Just about everyone else was a no show. Take away Edey and what do you have? IU.

Wow, that's your takeaway? I would love to have made it to the final game...

The worst consequence of Purdue’s success the last two years has been allowing the media and fans to see their history and culture. It’s an unattractive brand that plays an unentertaining style.

The takeaway is that this was the best chance they have had in my lifetime and I was born in 1977. This is the first time they have made it to a championship game since 1969. They dominated the Big Ten and steamrolled into the championship game. IMO, this is the last time we will see Purdue ever play for the nat'l championship in our lifetimes. The part on IU is not a takeaway. It's a fact. When you know that the nat'l championship is not going to happen, you default to next best thing which is beating big brother. They really should hang banners in Mackey for beating IU.

I think more likely than not PU and Painter maintain their grip on the BT and continue getting high seeds.

To say this was their one shot, given Painter's age and trajectory, is presumptuous.

PU will be good every year, great some.

You can’t use the past to project Painter into the NIL and transfer portal era.

PU will still stay at the top of the BIG. They return a lot of experience and have a really good class coming in. They will stay solid next year.
As for this game, UConn had a great game plan, take away the 3 and guard Exeybine on one and let him have a tough 30+

The experienced players will get exposed without a double team on Edey, and they don’t have a really good class coming in.

How's that going for OLD IU? Any Success there?
IU has had some success with the transfer portal. Normally a new coach taking over after a bad coach would need a year or two to get to the tourney, and Woodson was able to use NIL and the transfer portal to construct a tourney team in year one.

Do you think #38, #76, #111, #158, #243, and #291 is a really good class?
Compared to the rest of the BT, its pretty good! IU has what? You got to remember Purdue has owned the BT in recent years, return the majority with some really good athletes coming in! Purdue is going to be top 3! Woody Wood Pecker retiring soon!

It's ok....the sting from last night will pass.

However, the self awareness that you'll never see an NCAA championship banner hung in Mackey....that will burn at you from the inside until you turn to dust.

CBS has Purdue at the top of BT next year, they actually listed IU at 11th! You should be proud!

Painter has had 3 or 4 really good teams over the years. I'd be surprised if he doesn't put together another one.

My next goal after not winning it all would be winning the big ten regular season. Third goal would be the big ten tournament. The big ten tournament was created just for money and with that in mind I might put beating KY at KY or PU at PU as third.

Bad timing. Having your all time best team run up against a historically good UCONN team is unfortunate.

Happy to see Edey gone. What a monster of a player.

But, Purdue will slide to the bottom of the league and we can stop hearing about their culture.

I agree. Coach Painter coaches them up too. I think Edey was a 3 star when he came to PU. Now he is gonna go on to the NBA.
Most of the credit for Edey's improvement, imo, goes to Edey. He's worked extremely hard and improved on his weaknesses. Painter's certainly deserves credit for recognizing him and going after him, but Edey's worked his a** off. Painter did build a team around him that exploited the player he was and he gets huge credit for that. But, in the end, UConn was better at every other position and it showed. They've raised the game, imo.

It's funny how some can't see what is so plainly obvious.

Painter will be at PU another 10+ years. He's going to have the same kind of success, maybe more.

No, it doesn't make me happy, but it's plain as day.

Anybody who has PU finishing 11th next year in conf care to back that up w a wager?

This^^^ hate them all you want but he has the program set to not ever be crappy. He is a really good coach that recruits to his culture and system.

Again, you are projecting based on a past that does not exist today. NIL and transfer portal is changing college sports significantly.

Players that improve to star status under Painter will transfer to a blue blood for money and national visibility.
I honestly doubt it. Look at the type kids he is recruiting. He is getting kids and developing them. He isn’t chasing the 5 star one and done types. Also look at some of the best teams in the country. None of them are NIL hot beds.
Creighton
Iowa st
Purdue
Marquette

key is good coaching and putting together well balanced rosters. Painter has a reputation of doing this every year.

Agree with all that. My point is that Painter’s strength in developing teams is predicated on him keeping players, which is not going to happen in the new era we are entering.
