Rowing machine a good workout.

Good job....I am just over 500k for the year which ends April 30 per Concept 2....but I did have rotator cuff surgery in 2023 which knocked me out for a few months... hope to start cranking out the meters again....p.s. I am slow and go unlike you sprinters, you and kkott...
Yes, I've finally aged enough to be called a sprinter! Well, by someone other than my girlfriend!

Hey you fellow heathens and debaucherers, finally through enough of my physical maladies to break out the rower again! Hoping SD and frikken are also doing something regularly besides pleasuring themselves and that SGL finally caved and bought a rower. Happy holidays and New Years!

I was just thinking of rescusitating this thread. As I predicted, I hardly rowed during golf season, but picked things up in the fall.

I just passed 500k for the year this morning.

Steak, bourbon, cigars and the occasional old fashioned keeps a man young

One of my best friends from childhood is always bartering, buying, and selling motorcycles, cars, guns, boats, whatever. He'll call me and say say "hey, I've got my hands on a <insert thing he acquired >. You interested? I'm letting it go for $Y, but I'll cut you a deal for $X and an old fashioned at a future time of my choosing".

Hope he's kidding about the old fashioned part.

I need to do something that doesn't grind one of my knees into a fine powder and compress L4-S1 any further. May have to seriously look into this gay rowing stuff.
It's only gay if you row nekked. If you do, use some talcum on your bum or you'll get a rash.

Seriously though, my left knee is shot and rowing has not bothered it a bit and I feel like it makes it feel better by strengthening so many of the related muscles. Funny because everyone says riding a bike is good for your knees and nothing has bothered my knee more. I can ride recreationally, but not for cardio.

Strangely enough, it's my left knee also and the bike bothers it after a while. Even more than hiking with a backpack does.

I figure another 5 years or so and I'll just get a new one. Knee, not bike.

I'm there: need a new knee. I just am very resistant to surgery if I don't have to, but mine limits me and is painful and swells at times. The surgeon I saw said it's definitely bad enough, but he was worried that as active as I am, I'd wear out the replacement knee and he said you don't really want to have to replace a replacement. Probably better procedure now, but I've stuck with that and am trying to wait as long as I can. I also have a really bad ankle so even if my knee was 100%, I'd really not be able to do a lot more stuff/activities.

I'm not to the point where it limits me yet and the pain is more discomfort than actual pain. I still pop a few Ibuprofens and will be fine. My buddy who's an ortho said the same thing your guy told you. Wait as long you can, because it'll only last around 20 years and you don't want to go through it a second time in your 70s. As long as the Vitamin I is working and I'm not eating them like candy, I'll keep waiting.

Yep, I can't jog because of my left knee, but rowing is non contact, so it is fine.

Certain rowing exercises do hurt my back a little, but so does everything else, including sleeping and sex, so it seems like rowing doesn't cause more harm than living does. Heh.

The biggest reason I had to stop rowing, was I started getting a stiffness in my lower back and it would "lock up" and spasm after rowing. I went to see a PT and he gave me 4-5 exercises to do and they've helped a ton. Not sure what they are called, but he had me video tape them and I could send those videos to you, or try and describe them if you're interested. I try and do them daily and haven't had any of the pain or stiffness since starting. They take about 10 minutes to do.

Do you know what was wrong with your back in the first place? Wouldn't make sense to do exercises that don't solve my problem.

I'm sure it's the rowing stroke I have to use, but it was making the muscles in my lower back stiffen and spasm. My left knee is not good and my right ankle is fused, so I can't tighten that strap down, because my ankle doesn't flex or move.

Oh geez, yeah, rowing with a fused ankle sounds impractical.

My back only hurts badly when the particular exercise I'm using forces me to row fast with low power. In that case, I basically use no arms or body, and my back can't tolerate that pitched forward position for minutes on end.

I appreciate the thoughtful offer, but I kinda doubt exercises will make that position easier. And I don't have to do that much.

I knocked out about 7500m this morning. Got up at 4:30 because I had a 6:30 AM meeting, which was stupid but worth it.

that's awesome. I wish I could work out in the morning, but I just am too grumpy in the morning. I also wish I could do longer rows, but about 30 mins is my max. I tell myself I'm just going to do an easy 10K, but once I start rowing, I can't help but crank up the intensity.

Yeah, I can't work out at night anymore. Once I eat dinner, it's basically dishes, couch, bed. Maybe more work if I'm motivated.

I also can't do 10k in 30 minutes. At least not on my machine. That's at 1:30 split. My max split is only 1:21, and I can't hold that for more than a few seconds. That's really good.

No, I don't do that, I'm just saying I've planned to do an easy pace and try and knock out 10K, but once I start rowing, my pace and heart rate creep up, even if I don't mean to. I think 7500m is the longest I've ever done.

Ah OK. That's still plenty fast.

My machine does a lot of interval training, which forces you to regulate your SPM to win the "game" you're playing.

I always had the same problem with jogging. Can't go slow. Don't want to. Can't execute a pace that doesn't wear me out, even before my knee stopped cooperating.

Hey Hook, I think you should definitely try rowing for your knee. I had a knee replacement in 2018 that really didn't improve the knee pain I have and limits all my physical activities I used to enjoy ...mainly hiking in my later years. During Covid I took up rowing with a Concept 2 and it has become my exercise of choice. Doesn't cause any addtl pain to my knee and I can get some cardio workout...try it!

Hey kkott, I'm really disappointed in my knee replacement but I would never discourage someone from having one because the vast majority will see a big improvement. I'm unfortunately one of the unlucky ones. I saw another Ortho about a year after the replacement. He said he could do a replacement of the replacement and would give a 30% chance of improvement, 30% chance of it remaining the same and 30% chance it would be worse. I didn't really like those odds so I did nothing.

Seems like surgeries have slowed my rowing the past couple of years....rotator cuff last year and prostate this year. I'm up to around 6.5 MM and determined to get my FREE 10 MM shirt before I croak.

Keep on keeping on buddy!

Thanks.

traded some texts with kkott and he's got me on the lookout for a used machine.

Did an extra 2k this morning to close out the year at 550km.

I hope to do more next year, since I'm pretty much giving up golf for the next year or three. 750k or 1 mil for a year is approachable if I make it a habit.

Anyone else got year-end numbers?

I have 497k season to date. Concept 2 on the app ends April 30th. Not sure why they don't use the calendar year?
