The father of the modern Vice Presidency, where you have a seat at the table, and a much higher profile with real power, Pence excluded.
Sorry, much to your chagrin, Richard Nixon is the father of the modern day Vice-Presidency. From his deep involvement in foreign affairs to the ascendancy of the Vice-President to the head of the party once the President is off the big stage, Nixon started it all.

Believe it or not, this wasn't as frequent an occurrence from say the entrenchment of the two party system until Truman assumed the mantle upon Roosevelt's death.
