Walter Frederick "Fritz" Mondale, who served as vice president under then-President Jimmy Carter before waging his own unsuccessful White House bid in 1984, has died, according to a family spokesperson. He was 93.

Sorry, much to your chagrin, Richard Nixon is the father of the modern day Vice-Presidency. From his deep involvement in foreign affairs to the ascendancy of the Vice-President to the head of the party once the President is off the big stage, Nixon started it all.

Believe it or not, this wasn't as frequent an occurrence from say the entrenchment of the two party system until Truman assumed the mantle upon Roosevelt's death.
