I love hearing the rumors that Race, Trayce, XJ might want to come back next year and that would just be WONDERFUL. I know things are still in motion with the Renau kid and getting him would be WONDERFUL.

BUT...I hate stating the obvious again...WHO, ON THIS ROSTER, CAN MAKE THREES CONSISTENTLY? Surely to goodness we aren't going to commit the same sin over and over and over again...

For you guys who know stuff about recruiting, are we involved with any recruit/portal entrant, who can actually make the three consistently?

Go Hoosiers!

If we're still stuck with two back to the basket players clogging up the lane next year on offense then we won't be much better if at all. It's 2022 and that is an outdated way of playing.

If Race comes back he needs to he more aggressive from three and play as a face up 4. This will allow XJ and JHS room to operate. Honestly best case scenario Trayce comes back and Geronimo plays the 4 with Bates making a big jump at the 3. XJ and JHS in the backcourt looks like potential to be scary good on paper.

Lot of ifs in that scenario however.

At this point there are obviously some “ifs” for next year.

What about the rest of the conference? Watching the dominoes of the conference collapse in the NCAAs made me wonder about the league for next year. Teams are losing a ton. Anyone have an early outlook on the conference for next season? This year it had parity, but was really weak at the top.

I guess what I’m getting at is IF IU remains largely intact, where would that place us in next years projected league? Another year of our typical 7-9 conference wins?

TJD and Race are very likely gone. If Woody doesn't do VERY well in the portal, next season could be ugly.
I would be surprised if Trace or Race come back. I don’t know enough x and o to know if that is good or bad for total team success.
Is it asking too much for a freshman to hit threes at 40%?

Go Hoosiers!

Candidates to shoot 40%+:

XJ - especially if getting to play off the ball at times with jhs, running some point

Kopp - without commentary as an overall player, the capability to be at 40% is there (assuming tjd is back, leading to quality catch/shoot opportunities)

Bates - has the stroke, obviously an up/down freshman year (plus a lot to manage off the court)

Candidates to shoot 35%:

Gunn - Think he eventually is a 40%+ candidate later in his career

Geronimo - Made a decent amount and in big situations, have to figure that improves with consistent playing time/role.

Galloway - Form is much better than his freshman year (I acknowledge the %’s weren’t much better, but the misses were more consistent/closer, his shot needed such an overhaul, one offseason wasn’t going to fix it). Seems like a gym rat, given his form likely requires less change vs. last summer, my guess is the focus will be on footwork(getting the puppies set), speed on catch/release, etc, and a ton of volume this summer. He has demonstrated the “feel” on his floaters, running hooks/banks, etc, therefore that should translate to his jumper at some point.

As far as the overall roster:

1-3: 120 mins a game
Xj - 32
Tg - 20
Tb - 20
Jhs - 20
Kopp - 12
Gunn - 12
Leal - 4

4-5: 80 minutes a game
Tjd 32
JG. 25
RT: 20
LD/Banks: Not much, unless foul trouble on top 3 (if RT or TJD don’t return, ample opportunity for minutes)

Coming off his strong finish, it only makes sense for TJD to go pro; I don't think Race would have spoken on senior night if he planned to come back. They were a big part of IU's success this season.

Race only 20 minutes. Come on man if he comes back, he will more than 20

That is reasonable, but he is limited as a stretch 4, I believe next year Woody will move more toward his desired 4 out 1 in.

Race had 20/21 mins in the ncaa games
35 against Iowa (jg out)
25 against Illinois (jg got 9, injured)
21 against Michigan (jg got 19) - I think this is most representative of how Woody would like to use them.
27 against Purdue (jg got 13)

So overall 35-40 minutes were allocated to jg/race, and I think together that moves to 45 combined (take some burden off tjd), with jg getting the extra 5, and race remaining near 20.
Overall, this would be a good problem to have.

Question About Where We Are Right Now

Wandering in the basketball desert. Sorta like Moses and his people.

We can stay in games with our current 3 shooting (not unlike Kansas’s shooting); we can win games with even slight improvement. From scoring perspective, we could use a player or two couple who can hit Free Throws we can count on to lock up close games. That is a screaming deficiency.

IU no longer needs Kopp's services. He was a huge failure. Need schollie for someone worthy of wearing cream and crimson.
I made a comment earlier that it’s too bad we didn’t get him before he retired from basketball. Appears that he looks at IU as his “grad school” pension program. Very disappointed in him. Just seems go through the motions on the court.

When I saw KU stats for the year it’s hard to believe. They hit 1 more 3 per game. Our problem is hitting everything else. How many bunnies did that team miss. Rebounding needs improvement too. Kansas was just more efficient.

You don’t trust miller late!???🙃

Making the realistic/but still optimistic assumption that Reneau commits, Xavier and TJD are coming back, and then also that Miller comes back.

Here's what I'd do with the minutes...It won't average out to this over the season, this would just be for a close game in the B10, as an example.

Point Guard Minutes (40 minutes total)...Xavier 30, JHS 7, Tamar 3...I would say it'll be rare that BOTH X and JHS are out in a close conference game. But for the rare times they are, Tamar would likely bring it up.

2-3 Positions Minutes (80 minutes total)...Trey 18, Tamar 17, Jordan 16, JHS 15, Remaining 14 minutes split between Miller, CJ, and maybe Kaleb if he ends up being a decent shooter...This is a very, very versatile and athletic group. Unfortunately, not much shooting. If CJ or Kaleb can breakout, obviously they could take some minutes.

4 Man Position (40 minutes total)...Race 24, Malik 12, Jordan 4...Race and TJD will play a lot together. When they don't, Malik will force his way onto the court. He's too good not to. Jordan will get a few minutes as a "stretch 4".

5 Man Position (40 minutes total)...TJD 30, Malik 8, Race 2...This one is probably off a bit. Race will play a few more minutes than this when TJD is out...but its a good enough estimation.

Essentially this replaces Parker, Rob, and most of Millers minutes with minutes with JHS, Tamar, Jordan, and Malik.

It doesn't immediately jump out that it will improve our outside shooting. In fact, on the surface, it looks like it might make it worse. But what it will do, is DRAMATICALLY improve our playmaking and athleticism in those minutes. It will make those minutes younger, maybe less reliable. But the potential is much, much higher I would say, in terms of all around production. You'd go from 3 basically unrated, relatively unproductive seniors, to 3 - 5 star kids, and one of the most athletic players in the country.

I'd take that...even knowing our shooting likely won't get much better, if not worse.

Malik to IU!!! Lets gooo!!!

Come on back TJD. And lets hope X and Woody have figured something out.

Shooting is still a question mark, but overall talent isn't.

4 - 5 star kids, a couple more 4 stars...

Xavier would be an All B10 level kid. Jordan Geronimo is one of the more athletic players in the country. You gotta figure out how to more efficiently put the ball in the hole, but Woody has quite a lot of athleticism and talent to better figure that out!

I kinda hope they're done at this point. I wouldn't mind, at all, Dexter Dennis committing as well, but that means someone that hasn't left to this point, would have to.

If TJD returns, my guess is Kopp will opt out. At least that would be my vote. No disrespect, but our bench is deep and young. Odds are some combination will be able to give us at least what Kopp did last year.

Seems reasonable. I don't like that, but I guess he was a 1 year mercenary anyways. And I did spend too much time last week arguing that Dexter Dennis would be a big upgrade over Kopp.

Assuming TJD does return, I hope Jordan and Woody are on the same page. Losing him would definitely diminish some of the excitement and positive momentum we'd have gotten from Race, TJD, and Malik.

Doesn't someone have to leave right now?
If TJD returns, wouldn't that make two that would be out?

We lost Stewart, Rob, and Lander. That created space for JHS, Banks, and Gunn. So I think we're just 1 over now with Malik.

Durr left as well. We're at the 13 limit now with TJD testing the waters. Could be at 12 if he remains.

We are full right now. 13 with TJD staying. Going to be an interesting couple of months.
