PU made 17 3's, and IU can hardly make a perimeter shot. Trayce gets his shot blocked inside by Texas, while Purdue has another 7'4" Center dunking off several easy rebounds.

I doubt we’ve closed the gap much with them, but there’s plenty of time to worry about PU later.PU made 17 3's, and IU can hardly make a perimeter shot. Trayce gets his shot blocked inside by Texas, while Purdue has another 7'4" Center dunking off several easy rebounds.
I’d take Painter and I’m not kidding.
That shipped sailed when BK passed on him as a high schooler. Would’ve been a great coach for us and might’ve allowed us to not go through the last 20 years of decline, but that’s all history now.I’d take Painter and I’m not kidding.
Painter would have been fired here more than once.
If you are saying he is better than AM...then I understand that debate, but if you are saying you would take Painter as the Indiana Coach...the data doesn't back that up at all.
IU would be lucky to have Painter.
Purdue (as usual) plays nobody in the nonconference. While IU was playing a potential top ten team, (Texas) Purdue was playing an 0-5 Oakland.
Cam's barely been at IU long enough to make an impact on their schedule as most of the games are set years ahead of time.To be fair, IU has played some pretty weak NC schedules as well. This year is an exception and I hope one that sticks around.
As what? Head Coach?
Look we can debate if he is better than AM, we couldn't know that for some time...but either way IU gets a better coach than MP. No offense, he is a good fit for a program like PU, but there is a reason he has not moved up in all these years.
If we can get a better coach than MP, why haven’t we?As what? Head Coach?

Nonsense. Painter has a higher overall winning percentage, by double digits, during his time at Purdue than IU has achieved over the same period. He’s won 37 more conference games than IU during that time. Further, he’s won at a higher overall and conference percentage than the coach he succeeded, Gene Keady. You’re not suggesting IU or any other school would’ve fired GK, are you? And all of this at a school that enjoys far less support than IU, has more modest basketball facilities, is much lower profile on the national stage, and is universally recognized as harder to recruit to. I get that they’re our rival, but what you’re saying makes zero sense.Full caveat, Painter’s a very good coach. But if Archie Miller is still at IU in 15 years (like Painter at Purdue) it’s because he’s lapped Painter. As you said in a previous post, Painter would have been fired multiple times by now at Indiana as well as many other B10 programs. There’s why there are only 3 coaches tenured 10+ years. Matt Painter has proven over the years he’s a high floor/low ceiling coach.

Lol Purdue consistently plays tough non cons. Oakland was added to the schedule like two weeks ago because of covid and games being dropped. Liberty and Clemson were a part of a tourney. Liberty replaced a team that dropped out due to, you guessed it, covid. Congrats on playing in the Maui invite and playing good teams though. Well, Texas is good.Purdue (as usual) plays nobody in the nonconference. While IU was playing a potential top ten team, (Texas) Purdue was playing an 0-5 Oakland.
How does it make zero sense?
Painter’s first 9 years at Purdue:
-1 B10 title (shared)
-2 S16’s
-3 missed tourney’s
Crean’s 9 years at IU:
-2 B10 titles (both outright)
-3 S16’s
-5 missed tourney’s
Obviously higher peaks and valleys for Crean, but once you take into consideration that Crean started from absolutely nothing and gets a universal pass for years 1 and 2, there’s really no argument as Crean was pretty much graded on a 7 year period. No way Painter survives 9 years at IU with the resume he had at Purdue.
And if for some reason he wasn’t fired after year 9, he absolutely gets canned after year 11 after two colossal choke jobs in the NCAAT. Especially after he strong-armed the program for a raise. Purdue was at a crossroads after year 11 after blowing a 12 point lead to UALR w 4 minutes to go, yet let a lame duck AD on his way out give Painter an extension. Obviously he’s rebounded nicely from that point, but there’s only a handful of B10 programs who would have retained Painter at that point if he already wasn’t gone.

Only a handful of B10 programs who would’ve retained him at that point? No way you actually believe that.
I wouldn’t have wrote that if I didn’t believe it. IU basically fired Crean during a 7 year period (exclude the first two seasons for rebuild) where he won the B10 twice and went to 3 S16’s.
You’re telling me Ohio State, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Michigan, etc are keeping a coach who finished dead last in the conference in year 9? Especially when preceded by a losing record in year 8? No freaking chance. That might fly at Penn State or Northwestern but 75% of the other B10 schools? Not a chance.
No chance Painter gets fired at IU after either the 9th year or the 11th. Zero chance. He’s a superior coach to Crean and has built a program that’s much more successful than IU’s, with far fewer inherent advantages. If could do what he’s done at PU, he would’ve been even better at IU.How does it make zero sense?

They absolutely would’ve kept him because it was obvious his dip would be short lived. Crean got fired because the program was trending down, with no reasonable hope of it turning back up.I wouldn’t have wrote that if I didn’t believe it. 75?! Wow

Purdue had already gone long with MP and it was obvious that their dip would be temporary (and that’s proven true). Very few programs would’ve run him in that scenario, and the ones that did would’ve been shown to be stupid had they done so.Name a B10 program, or any P5 program for that matter, that’s retaining a coach who had a losing record in year 8 and followed it up with a dead last place conference finish in year 9?
Crean got fired because the program was heading down fast, recruiting was following it, and there was little hope he could rescue it. That’s well known.Crean got fired for less. What are you talking about?

Temporary? He strong-armed the program for a raise after year 7, had losing records in year 8 and 9 and then blew a 7 point lead in the 1st rd of the NCAAT with 50 seconds left in year 10 and then blew a 12pt lead with 4 minutes left in the first rd of the NCAAT in year 11. And they extended him AGAIN. Painter would have been run out of town by any self-respecting program in the country at that point.
I guess Nova should’ve run Jay Wright out of town after year 11 or 12.
No AD would’ve been so stupid as to run him out of town after two first round losses, and the results since then have proved that conclusively true. Painter does much more with much less . . . Put him at IU and his results would’ve been even better. Saying he’d haven fired anywhere else, let alone by 75% of the other conference schools, simply is ridiculous. You’re saying a guy who’s won at a higher percentage than Keafy would’ve been fired? It’s laughable.Temporary? Ah, the “you‘re a Purdue fan” white flag! Sorry, that’s a losing argument, since it’s obviously not true. You’re saying Purdue would’ve fired Painter after back to back tournament losses? Of course, they were Big 10 champs the following year, so that would’ve been an idiotic move. Good thing you’re not an AD. That you’d rely on what a few fans say only confirms that fans who don’t know the game don’t get to vote on stuff like this. LolPurdue’s own fan base was calling for his head after the back to back losing seasons. You, as a Purdue fan, should know this.
No one would’ve fired Painter. Not one school. It’s ludicrous on its face.I guess Nova should’ve run Jay Wright out of town after year 11 or 12.
And yes temporary. Those were the only two years he lost in the first round of the NCAAT. Didn’t happen before and hasn’t since.

MP had a better overall and conference record that GK. You believe he should’ve been fired on the eve of winning a Big 10 championship. Your “argument” is DOA. You obviously never coached. Think about that. You thought a guy on the verge of winning a conference championship would’ve been fired by 75% of Big 10 schools. No basketball person would agree with your view. Not one.Gene Keady had won the B10 three times in his first 7 years. Painter didn’t win his third B10 title until year 14. Gene Keady’s second losing season came in year 22, Painter had back to back losing seasons in years 8 and 9. Not sure why you’re so emphatic about dying on this hill.

Ah, shifting back to Crean, since you realize your Painter position is DOA. I’m not using hindsight. Had you been following the program then or understood what you were watching, you would’ve understood the direction the program was heading. And, no, the majority of the fan base hadn’t turned on him by then. Guessing you were one of the “We’re Back!” crowd that thought he was a good fit at IU. LolCrean won the B10 after the majority of the fan base had turned on him. Using hindsight is a bad faith argument, but I’m not surprised.
