Only 30% of Americans support pardons for J6 criminals.

What was the question? The statistic is worthless w/o knowing exactly what was asked.
It's in the link. Supporting and defending the J6 rioters is one of the many things I don't get about the MAGA faction of the party. They attacked police. They damaged Capitol property. These are things Republicans historically oppose.

That’s too many, but it’s still significant. If Trump follows through on pardoning all or most he’ll be spending political capital he can’t afford to spend.

I don't support full pardons for any of them. What they did was unforgivable and should never happen again. Pardoning them sends the message as clearly as it could be sent that what constitutes a permissible protest to a disputed election outcome all depends on who wins and loses them.

That said, I do think there were a handful of excessive sentences handed down that I wouldn't have a problem seeing commuted. If I'm not mistaken, that's how Carter handled some of the Watergate perps.

@dbmhoosier for months led the charge educating all of us fools on what was going to happen in November. He was right and is the undisputed polling king until 2028.

n you copy and paste? I don
thanks.

lumping the proud boy insurrectionists with those who walked into the Capitol did nothing and left is a stupid question.

It's weird that Trump calls them 'hostages.' They still pledge allegiance to Trump though which I guess is good enough for a get out of jail free card.

Maybe Luigi Mangione's defense attorney should tell him to wear a MAGA hat, call Trump the best president ever, say his inauguration crowd size is the largest known to human history and claim Brian Thompson voted for Kamala Harris 200 times in multiple swing states and he'd probably get pardoned. He's a fellow Penn grad...he might even get nominated for a cabinet position.

False equivalencies are very popular these days.

Mmm, his point was that it was unpopular. It's a fair comparison, since the level of public support is the subject of your OP. So I'm ruling against you here.

Of course, I would also add that the level of public support for a pardon probably doesn't matter a great deal to the presidents who make them. But maybe they should.

I noticed he offers up the false equivalences to what happened in places like Portland and Minneapolis vs the January 6 rioters. To be clear, anyone who broke the law in federal buildings in Portland, Minneapolis or where ever should also be appropriately prosecuted, but it's a totally different situation than what happened in the Capitol on January 6.

These comparisons are similar to what would happen if you trespassed at a basketball game. If you walked out on the court during a sparsely attended high school game during the game, the referees would rightly stop the game and some hired security would escort you outside and tell you not to come back in. Now consider what would happen if you did the exact same thing during live action at a Final Four or NBA Finals game.

Similar transgressions, but night and day difference in consequences.

I don't think there's all that much substantial difference. Our biases often color the lens through which we see things. That certainly goes for Trump (who sees pretty much everything in relation to him) -- and it goes for all of us.

I do get what you're saying -- about the time/place and their respective underlying motivations. But actions are actions, mayhem is mayhem. And I think there were J6ers who got excessive sentences, relative to their actual actions (to the best of my info, anyway).

But there is a significant distinction between a pardon and a commutation. I don't think pardons are warranted here for any of them.

I have no problems with a pardon for anyone who was nonviolent. That isn't to say I want it done; I just don't think it is that big of a deal. Many will have served some time, and most would have spent lawyer money. It isn't like it has all been cake.
